SIMPLE PAST TENSE
What is Simple Past
Tense?
● Expresses actions that already happened
● Uses time markers like "yesterday," "last
week," "ago"
● Can be in verbal or nominal form
Question: Can you think of an action you
did yesterday?
Verbal Form: Positive Statements
● Subject + Verb 2 (past tense verb)
Examples:
● I studied English last night.
● She went to Panam yesterday.
Verbal Form: Negative
Statements
● Subject + did not (didn't) + Verb 1 (base
form)
Examples:
● I did not study English last night.
● She did not go to Panam yesterday.
● Remember: Verb changes back to base
form with "did not"
Verbal Form: Questions
● Did + Subject + Verb 1 (base form) + ?
Examples:
● Did you study English last night?
● Did she go to Panam yesterday?
Nominal Form: Using
Was/Were
● For statements about state of being or
location in the past
● Use "was" for I, he, she, it
● Use "were" for you, we, they
Examples:
● I was in Okura last month.
● They were so happy last night.
Nominal Form: Negative and Questions
● Negative: Subject + was/were + not
● Questions: Was/Were + Subject + ?
Examples:
● I was not in Okura yesterday.
● We …… in Okura yesterday.
● Were they happy last night?
● ……. She busy last week?
