This document summarizes and provides examples of 6 simple machines - the inclined plane, wedge, wheel and axle, screw, lever, and pulley. It then discusses two examples of compound machines that are made up of combinations of simple machines: a can opener contains a lever, wedge, gear, and wheel and axle, while a stapler uses a lever and wedge. Each simple or compound machine is accompanied by an example of its common location in a house.
2. Inclined Plane Makes it easier to move objects upward and downward, looks like a ramp. Location Stairs – Back entrance to basement Fan – Bedroom
3. Wedge Cuts things and pushes materials apart from each other. Location Scissors – Bathroom Knife – Kitchen
4. Wheel and Axle Makes it easier to move things from one place to another by rolling them. Location Cars – Outside of my house Walker – Living room
5. Screw Takes many twists to go a short distance to hold things together. Location Towel Holder – Bathroom Side Latch – Bedroom Door
6. Lever Uses a fulcrum to redirect force over a longer distance which makes lifting weight easier. Location Flush Handle – Bathroom Bottle Opener – Kitchen Drawer
7. Pulley Makes lifting things easier with a rope by redirecting force. Location Window Blinds – Bedroom Flag Pole – Shopping Center
8. Compound A can opener is made up of 4 simple machines. The arms of a can opener is a lever. They open and close on one fulcrum to grip and help open a can. The part that slices open a can is a wedge. As the can opener moves around the can, the wedge cuts through the metal top. The part that grips and helps rotate the can around is a gear. The gear uses energy from the turning handle to spin around. The rotating handle on a can opener is a wheel and axle. When you turn the handle, energy transfer to the gear and wedge, which rotate and open a can. Location Can Opener – Kitchen Drawer
9. Compound Continued A stapler is made up of 2 simple machines. The top arm of the stapler is a lever. When you push down on it, it transfers energy into a staple. A staple as it pierces paper is a wedge. When you push down on the stapler, it sends out a sharp metal staple which pierces through paper. Location Stapler – Kitchen Cabinet
