The Flaws of Non-Governmental Organizations in Developing...
The role of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the world today has been increasingly
questioned in recent literature as people begin to recognize the flaws of our development aid
industry. The article NGOs A Tainted History by Firoze Manji and Carl O Coill explores the
history of the rise of NGOs in Africain order to demonstrate that their aim is to control and colonize
Africa. Similarly, the novel Damned Nations: Geed, Guns, Armies Aidby Samantha Nutt
emphasizes the patriarchal tendencies of the aid industry and the influences of the political
objectives of donor countries with descriptions of her first hand experiences on the field. With the
articles Challenging Indifference to Extreme Poverty: Considering Southern Perspectives on Global
Citizenship and Change by Barbara Heron and International NGOs and the Aid Industry: constraints
on international Solidarity by Molly Kane in mind, I considered the effects and roles of NGOs as
development organizations and instruments of change. Whereas the compilation of stories in
Generation NGO, edited by Alisha Apale and Valerie Stam, recollected individual experiences of
development workers, highlighting the moral and ethical challenges they faced day to day.
Analysis of the abovementioned readings allowed me to conclude that NGOs are destructive in the
developing countries in which they are situated because they impose colonialist influences, are
biased towards their political supporters, are ineffective when faced

Lieutenant-General Murat s Role In The Battle Of The Pyramids
While Joachim himself was known as a player Caroline had fallen head over heels for the young
general. Unfortunately Joachim had to return to work as a general and was soon busy in Egypt
with Caroline s older brother Napoleon. Caroline herself had gone off to one of the most elite
schools for women in France at the time. During Murats time in Egypt he would play a key role in
many battles including The battleof Alexandria and The battle of The Pyramids. He also led in the
battle of Lake Tiberius by surprising the Ottoman Empireand taking control. After a year and a half
fighting an unsuccessful warin Egypt Murat returned with Napoleon to Paris in 1799. Now a

Each general was tasked at recruiting men from their given area of expertise. Murat would go on
to speak with the men in the Calvary in hopes of convincing them to support Napoleon and the
other three generals in the coup d Г©tat. After gaining support from his men, Murat invited a
few soldiers to a dinner to discuss with Napoleon the crisis the current government was under. It
was during these dinners that Napoleon secured the trust of the soldiers who, in a couple of
days would all but insure him the position of first consulate. Murat played an important role on
the day of November 9th he was with Napoleon after he got thrown out of the council of Five

council men after they fled. After Napoleons rise to power France experienced a time of

The Model Of Emergent Leadership
Tuvia Bielski:
The Model of Emergent Leadership in Edward Zwick s Defiance Have you ever been in a
situation where you had to take charge, and take on leadership roles in a short period of time ?
Some people may say that not everyone can be a leader. Some also believe that leaders are born
with the necessary qualities, which make them successful as a leader. Others believe that leadership,
like many other character traits, can be learned and developed through life. The debate depends
on how you define leadership. A leader can be made in certain situations of survival. It can range
from promoting what is right to perform social changes, or just to execute their own ideas. When
you are a leader you gain a certain sense of independence, and pride that you started something.
Therefore, when it s finished you get to show people that you were able to accomplish all of this.
Watching the movie Defiance by Edward Zwick, I came across the character Tuvia Bielski. The
movie unfolded a leader in front of our eyes. Tuvia became the leader of the partisan group. His
characteristics that he possessed before he took his position, groomed him into the leader he was
then. Tuvia Bielski became a leader because of the circumstances he found himself in.
Defining Leadership
Leadership means the period during which a person occupies the position of leader. A leader is
someone who brings a group of people together, and directs them toward a common goal. Someone

My Favorite Part Of Football
My favorite part of football is when they hit each other and as a child growing up that is what I
got excited about and enjoyed watching. However after watching this documentary I really
started to think about the hazards and potential risks that the players face to entertain and
participate in. There was clear evidence of a sub optimal study performed by the NFL by doctors
of limited experience and published finding of bias and inaccurate information. The NFL
executives that knowingly withheld knowledge about the potential risks the players faced from
players should be held accountable for their actions. Dr. Bennet Omalu, forensic pathologist and
Dr. Ann McKee, director of neuropathology at the Veterans Administration in Massachusetts,
discovered and headed scientific studies that publicized the unexpected findings of a potential
link between concussions that NFL football players suffer from direct impacts on the field to a
disease of the brain that causes depression, personality changes, and suicidal tendencies. Chronic
traumatic encephalopathy or CTE is discovered and studied by these professionals, and published
for peer review among colleagues, finding that suggest that there is a direct link to the
concussions that are suffered by players to the incidence of suffering from CTE and its symptoms.
According to findings in the autopsies of Mike Webster and Terry Long, two former Pittsburg
Steelers NFL players performed by Dr. Omalu while employed as a medical

How Does Krogstad Change Throughout The Play
Character Analysis Torvald: Character Description Torvald is supposedly madly in love with
his wife Nora; seen by giving her pet nicknames, such as skylark , and always giving her money.
Changes dramatically as soon as he reads Krogstad s letter. Becomes sexist and selfishly angry
Key Action Helmer, Now you have destroyed all my happiness. You have ruined all my
future...And I must sink to such miserable depths because of a thoughtless woman! (Ibsen 62)
Filled with anger, Torvald ridicules Nora s father, and calls Nora a stupid hypocrite. This action
is very significant for the play because we start to see Torvald s true nature; he doesn t care for
Nora nor does he truly love her, but on the contrary... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rank, No, my dear fellow, I won t disturb disturb you; I would much rather go in to your wife for
a little while. (Ibsen 14) We don t know this at the moment but he is showing much more interest
in Nora than Torvald, as a sort of foreshadowing. Nora, Be nice now, Dr. Rank, and tomorrow you
will see how beautifully I shall dance, and you can imagine I am doing it all for you. (Ibsen 39)
Dr. Rank has by this time already confessed his love for Nora and well since he has nothing to
lose just starts to flirt with her. Thematic Connection Dr. Rank can relate to the unreliability of
appearance since he wasn t really that important in the play. He was seen as a man just doing his
job helping out a good friend. But as the story progresses we start to see that with his upcoming
death makes him realize that there s much more to life than what was previously seen by him.
Symbol Connection Dr. Rank relates to the New Years symbol by him changing his views. He
used to always visit Torvald just because it was his duty, but after a while he found love in Nora.
He used the excuse of going to visit Torvald to constantly visit Nora.He figured out to might as

Reasons To Stop Multitasking Summary
Peter Bregman, the CEO of Bregman s company, is the author How and (why) to Stop
Multitasking . In his article published in Harvard Business Review Blog in May 2010, he
establishes the importance and effectiveness of single tasking. He states that multitasking, in fact,
reduces our productivity, being the reason why it isn t as useful as people believe it is. As well, he
argues that by not multitaskingpeople end up being unstressed, patient, and more useful with their
time; demonstrating his opposition towards multitasking. Bregman implies the importance of
unitasking by emphasizing the positive impact it had on his family, building credibility with his
personal experiences as a CEO, and presenting facts. For Bregman, single tasking entails an
improvement in the working area and personal life. By talking about his experiences as a CEO
while multitasking, he demonstrates to the audience that he wasn t being efficient enough since

Descartes Arguments for Substance Dualism
Does Descartes provide a convincing argument for the claim that mind and matter are distinct
substances Descartes Argument For Dualism In his Meditations Rene Descartes aimed to
reconstruct the whole of science by trying to prove the distinction between mind and matter. He
gives an argument from doubt, and another from conceivability. I will give a brief summary of the
foundations Descartes builds his thesis on, and then looking at his arguments and whether they are
capable of persuading us that dualism is a logical stance to hold. To what extent if any is
Descartes successful in showing there is a real distinction between mind and body In Descartes

Thus Descartes premises are false and fail to convince us of substance dualism. Moreover,
Descartes relies on having a thorough knowledge of mind and body. We may conclude with
Descartes that thought is necessary to having a mind, and materiality is necessary to having a
body, it does not inevitably follow that there is an entity whose sole nature is to think. Descartes
is limited by his subjective viewpoint that it could not be the case that extension could be another
property of mind. He needs to prove the stronger argument that it is not possible for the mind to
have extension as one of it s properties. Descartes tries to make this proof in his Divisibility
Argument: Similar to this is the Argument from Distinctness which argues for the logical
possibility of separating mind from body. To do this, mind and body would have to be distinct and
thus it would prove both things. I can imagine myself as a thinking thing existing apart from the
body (as shown by the different essences in the argument from essence.). It is conceivable that a
thinking thing can exist without a body It is possible that a thinking thing can exist without a body
A thinking thing is not a body The first premise has some major issues if we refer back to our
objections to the argument from essence. We came to the conclusion that

My Personal Nursing Philosophy
Task
You are required to reflect on your own and your family s experience of health care, and the
experiences, beliefs and assumptions that have led you to choose to study nursing.
You are then required to explore the views and theories articulated by nursing theorists published
in scholarly literature, and apply what you learn to develop a personal nursing philosophy of care
(1800 words +/ 10% including in text references).
Introduction
The focus of this essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my own experiences of health care,
and beliefs and assumptions that have led me to choose to study nursing. It took me a long time to

Third, I want them to feel cared for in every situation.
I want suffering patients to feel the comfort of a compassionate presence. If they need to talk to
someone, I want to be able to help them think of the things that bring meaning to their lives.
Fourth, I want my patients to feel that I am a competent nurse. When I come into the room, I don
t want them to wish it were someone else. I want them to feel they are in good hands. I want to
give them a sense of hope that the other staff and I will do everything we can and do it well.
Fifth, I want to have good relationships with my colleagues. I want to be known as a hard worker
and someone the patients like. I want my work to be an example to others.
I know I can t accomplish these goals on my own. I will need to work together with others. I will
not be able to accomplish them all the time. I need to remember that, because I get discouraged
when things do not go as planned.
I will have to keep myself healthy if I want to have the energy to attempt these goals. I want to keep

Disney And Female Stereotypes Of Women In Disney
For decades Disney has given the wrong impression of female gender roles. Today many of the
aspects such as women being the weaker sex and set roles for each denomination have not
changed as much as the society thinks. Looking at male and female characters in animations, one
can see how those two genders are portrayed differently in terms of their roles. In this case, Disney
has crossed the line portraying genderstereotypes to their films, especially stereotypes of women.
Disney films are creating major problems by teaching society how women should act and look. In
a research made by Hanes, Stephanie from The Christian Science Monitor , She decided to
research the princess phenomenon, and what she found worried her. She found that the $4 billion
Disney Princess Empire was the first step down a path to scarier challenges, from self
objectification to cyberbullying to unhealthy body images. As seen in this research, Disney affects

Raw Documentary Analysis
Documentaries. A piece of multimedia produced to enhance viewers knowledge about a particular
subject or event. They purport to portray reality; strive to showcase an unbiased viewpoint;
endeavour to tell a truthful story. However, this goal is rarely achieved. Directors create
documentaries in such a way they can never portray the entire truth. Filmmakers manipulate
numerous techniques such as interviews, footage, and editing to construct their version of the truth.
They depict reality in their perspective about the topic they wish to exploit.
A remarkably influential tool filmmakers utilise to portray a version of reality is their assortment of
interviewees. These careful selections can severely influence the documentaries depiction of true to

It is foolish to believe a documentary maker merely documents events as they unfold and
incorporates everything in the final product. If this were true, documentaries would be several
hours long, repeating the same point indefinitely and they would not be as captivating. Throughout
her film, Cowperthwaite purposely applies footage of Orca s in the wild; their natural habitat;
demonstrating how they should truly live. Cowperthwaite proceeds to incorporate additional
footage of Orca s in captivity, highlighting the drastic and monstrous change in lifestyle to the
viewers. Cowperthwaite also includes in her creation, footage of employees at shows and during
training. These videos show the trainers carefully working through stunts for shows with the utmost
care for safety, discounting SeaWorld s numerous claims of workers not taking correct precautions
before attempting a command. The inclusion of this footage positions the audience to develop a
further biased opinion of the unfortunate events that took place, based on the truth the director
includes. Therefore despite not being a feature movie, a documentary maker makes deliberate

How Steinbeck Presents the Relationship Between George and...
How Steinbeck presents the relationship between George and Lennie in particular at the beginning
and the end
The relationship between Lennie and George is very close throughout the book. Of Mice and
Men is set in the 1930s depression years in America. This means that their relationship was under a
lot of strain. It was unusual in those times to be able to sustain friendships because life was all
about living for the moment after America s great depression. They are in a place called the Salinas
River near Soledad.
John Steinbeck begins the novel Of Mice and Men with a picturesque description of the location
where the reader is first introduced to the characters of George Milton and Lennie Small. The

Lennie and George s dream is presented by Steinbeck in order to convey their relationship:
George. Tell me. Please, George. Like you done before
This dream cannot exist without friendship. This is most demonstrable in the relationship between
George and Lennie. Without the other, neither character would be able to maintain the dream.
Lennie is constantly asking George to tell about how it s gonna be . The constant repetition of the
way things will be is what keeps the dream alive in Lennie. However, George needs Lennie just as
much as Lennie needs him, which is apparent at the end of the novel. When George kills Lennie,
he also kills the friendship, which results in the death of the dream within himself. Friendship is an
underlying factor in the dreams of others as well.
From anger and remorse to a close friendship, Steinbeck portrays many different aspects to
Lennie and George s relationship. It is the main theme in this novel and stands out as a clear point
the author is trying to make. Their dream gives the reader an image of peacefulness between the
two, they got each other and living offa the fatta the lan , is their aim. They know that they wouldn
t be able to achieve this without each other, Lennie needs George to plan the dream and George
needs Lennie to keep it alive. In the end, the obstacles that Lennie has created are so terrible

Notes On Sound And Noise
2.1SOUND AND NOISE:
Sound is the variation of pressure in an elastic medium (such as air) caused by a mechanical
disturbance. The movement of molecules in a transmitting medium caused by a disturbance results
in pressure oscillations above (compressions) and below (rarefactions) the ambient pressure level.
The oscillation of sound pressure variations is referred to as a sound wave. A sound wave will
move through an ideal medium longitudinally and omnidirectionally. The oscillation frequency of a
sound wave determines the pitch of a sound, which is measured in Hertz (Hz). The healthy human
ear can typically discern frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hz. The amplitude of the pressure
oscillations of a sound wave describes the amount of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hard surfaces such as smooth wood or metal often reflect sound waves well but attenuate sound
poorly. Conversely, soft, porous surfaces usually reflect sound waves poorly but attenuate sound
waves well. Reflected sound waves can increase the overall SPL in an area, as the reflected
wave essentially becomes an additional sound source. Sound behaves predictably in the far field
(i.e., far enough away from individual sound sources relative to the size of the sound sources) and
most sound measurement equipment can only accurately measure SPLs in the far field. The
measurement of sound generated by a source within a reflective chamber (reverberant field) is
more difficult because the large number of reflections increase the overall SPL if the measurement
is also made within the reflective chamber. SPLs measured in the reverberant field of the ear
cannot directly be compared to SPLs in the free field without first compensating for the higher
SPLs at certain frequencies caused by the resonance of the ear canal.
2.2AUDITION:
Audition, or the perception of sound, is accomplished via the complex transformation from sound
pressure waves to electrical nerve impulses and interpretation in the brain. The human ear is
divided into three main parts; the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear (see Figure 2.1). The
outer ear consists of the pinna (or auricle), which is the visible portion of

Theories of Marx
In this seminar, I seek to analyse, discuss and evaluate the theories of Marx. Firstly, I will analyse
the relationship between human action and social structure. Having completed the analysis, I will
move on further to discuss and exemplify his theory of alienation. Lastly I will evaluate his theory
of false consciousness.
Question 1
Human action and social structure are extremely prevalent in the works of Marx. In terms of the
workers and capitalist classes, he postulates that they are not free but rather actors of the capitalist
system. The workers are forced into labour to make a living, the force of circumstance (Elster,
1986:29) while the capitalist is forced to keep themselves in business. Elster (1986:29) argues that

and is still able to work as Marx wished in his efforts, the workers would have to take risks to get
out of their situation and keep trying to overthrow capitalism, as in the case of the movie, Daens
where we witness them taking the dead child out on to the streets. This risk however is quickly
averted by the capitalists as they have the means, the money and the knowledge to get their
workers back to work. They simply call in a favour from the local police and then fire all those
who marched. The instigator or initial risk taker (the woman who met Daens) is then punished
further with rape as a means of enforcing their domination over the working class.
Question 3
False consciousness is termed in the context of the work of Marx as a statement of our existence, it
is not our consciousness that determines our existence, but

Meaning Of Comma
Do you know? A comma may be exempted from a ticket, this is incredible things. Commas are

Comparing Buddhism, Hinduism And Jainism, Buddhism And...
In our present day, there are roughly 4,200 religions being practiced all over the world. Some are
more popular and well known than others, with a few of the main world religions being
Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. With each religion, one can be slightly similar to
one and completely opposite in beliefs to another; this is seen in the idea of the afterlife, in which
Buddhismfocuses on the idea of rebirth and awakening, whereas Hinduism and Jainism both
believe in the idea of reincarnation until liberation. Buddhism is seen as a way of life rather than
a form of religion that needs to be closely followed and constantly practiced. The idea of
enlightenment carries through one s entire lifetime in an attempt to reach nirvana, which is an
end to all suffering. A person s lifetime is spent being faithful and relying on karma to eventually
achieve nirvana and enlightenment, in which people embark on the path of awakening. The
awakening is a very crucial aspect of the Buddhist religion, as it was Buddha s own personal
awakening and understanding of how the world works, in which he passed it on to be believed and
understood by others. It s closely related to other religions in the way that rebirth and reincarnation
are the beliefs surrounding the idea of the afterlife, however Buddhism in particular is an anatta
tradition, or not self, which often sets it apart from other religions. This complex ideal entails that
one s external self, consciousness, feelings

Poets Present Difficult Relationships in The Farmer’s...
Charlotte Mew explores the theme of lack of intimacy during the course of her poem, The Farmers
Bride. Various techniques are used to represent the stilted relationship the speaker and his maid
succumb to. Likewise, The Manhunt, written by Simon Armitage uses various metaphors and
semantic fields of war and anguish to illustrate the speaker s yearning to feel the hurt her partner is
experiencing and take the pain away. Although, the ambiguous ending doesn t satisfy this.
The six stanzas in The Farmer s Bride are of various lengths, with the meter per line varying. Mew
uses this as a representation of the in balance in the relationship of the farmer and his bride. During
the last stanza the farmer is presented to feel sympathetic for his bride and possibly regretful for
the animalistic manner he treated her throughout as she sleeps up in the attic there alone, poor
maid Tis but a stair betwixt us. This is structured in a stair way format, possibly implying the
farmer s now determination to work on his currently failed relationship. Relating this to the stairs
which distances them, is highlighting that they are on different levels from each other, but, despite
this he is willing to try. The two being on different levels is also reflective of their lack of intimacy
with each other, yet, the farmer longs for some other in the house than we. In comparison, Armitage
structures his poem in various stanza consisting of two lines each. This gives a sense of

Sour Dough Diet
Many Americans love the delicious, yet fattening, carbohydrate recognized as bread. Usually,
we all eat bread when it is stuffed with meat and cheese, but most can t resist the taste of certain
breads without the added accompaniments. Sour Dough bread, being a popular favorite, is
most commonly made by preparing your starter dough, feeding the starter dough, then finally
kneading and baking the loaves. The first step is making the starter dough. Before starting, make
sure you have a large, non metallic bowl for mixing. Making sure your bowls are non metallic
ensures that the dough will not ruin. Mix together dry yeast, two cups of warm water, and two
cups of all purpose flour. Once you have mixed all of your ingredients, obtain the mix with a
loose seal and leave the starter dough in a warm place to ferment for four to eight days and check
on it occasionally. Making sure the breadis well fermented will improve the quality of the dough.
Once the days have passed, the mixture is bubbly, and there is a pleasantly sour smell; the starter
dough is ready to be used. If the starter... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Water And Sunlight Affects Plant Growth
Review of Literature
Introduction How Water and Sunlight Affect Plant Growth
Photosynthesis is how water and sunlight affect plant growth. According to The Merriam Webster
Dictionary the definition of photosynthesis is the process by which chlorophyll containing plants
make carbohydrates from water and from carbon dioxide in the air in the presence of light . This
basically means photosynthesis is the process that all green plants undertake to receive their needed
food and energy using sunlight, water (H2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2). So water and sunlight
affects plant growth by helping the process of photosynthesis, which then helps the plant receive
energy and food.
Photosynthesis is essential, not only for plants, but all living things especially humans. As stated
before, photosynthesis helps plants receive their needed food and energy, which helps them grow
and stay alive. Photosynthesis is not just helpful for plants though. Plants produce various things
we use in life such as wood, paper, food, lumber, fuel, etc. That is not the only thing plants produce
for us. They produce oxygen for all human life and other living things to breathe. Without
photosynthesis there would be little plant life. Without plants there would be little human life.
Therefore, photosynthesis is extremely vital for all forms of life.
The process of photosynthesis is pretty complex. Sunlight and water are both very crucial elements
of this process. Here are the steps of the photosynthesis

The Origin Of The Banshee
Connor Harkins
Jonathan Tyler
English 102 10
1 February 2017
The Banshee The banshee is a phantom that is said to wail whenever a person is about to die. It
would visit a friend or a family member of a Irish person who was dying. People are afraid of
them because it shows us our mortality. We are afraid of death because we do not know what is
on the other side, so naturally we would be afraid of the harbinger of death. The origin of the
banshee is intertwined with death as it is in its spectre form. There are many legends that the
banshee came from. It ranges from women who took alcohol to mourn the death a member of a
powerful family to ancient goddesses that the Christian church turned into a demon. No matter what

The banshee is said to be a woman that were paid with alcohol to mourn the death of a person.
The family would pay the woman, who was normally and alcoholic, in drinks to cry at the grave a
their deceased loved one to make it seem like they were very respected. The Christian church did
not like this, so came about the story of the banshee. One theory of the banshee is that they are
being punished for their insincere mourning and alcoholism. They haunt a family and not a place
unlike many ghosts. The banshee probably haunts the family out of loyalty to them from their life
of mourning for the family. The origin of the banshee goes farther than that, it has a more
supernatural myth to it.
In Irish myth, the banshee is considered a fairy and so the church says that is it a demon wailing
that it is losing souls to heaven. It is said that the banshee comes from the ancient god race known
as the Tuatha De Danann. According to Carolyn White in A History of Irish Fairies, The Tuatha De
Danann, the divine folk descended from the mother goddess Dana or Danu, were gods from
Greece (some say, of the Golden race) who came to Ireland enshrouded by a magical mist which
hid the sun and their appearance for three days and nights... (White 18). This supports the idea of
the church that the banshee is a demon, because it is the descendant of a Pagan goddess. Women
are that to be bringers of life because they give birth to children. So the tale of the banshee being the

The Dark Room Of The Room
The Dark Room
The dancers in the room constantly remain in contact with anything the dancers touch. The dancers
progress from a wall to the arms of a person to a floor. The connection remains the same through
these actions. The points of contact remain with the body, and the dancer starts exploring different
perspectives of what the body can do with in relation to the ground.
The dancers consistently in contact with the objects around them. In the beginning, a woman walks
on the side of the wall while walking into an object. As a woman in a white dress comes out of a
swinging door, she walks forward with her body leaning on the wall. The women maintain the
contact of her left hand with the side left side of the wall. The room is full of chairs, so the
women also bumps into an object with a loud noise while leaning and maintaining the contact with
the wall. The noise is loud and drags on for the audience. The object would be a black chair. The
black chairs are not noticeable because the room at the very beginning of the dance is very dark. It
is not until several minutes into the play that you notice there are chairs are in the room.
Another instance of contact in the dance is when the women heads to her chair, she stands and
takes of her dress. The dress coming off revealing the bright white skin in contrast with the dark
room. The women stand briefly, looking straight ahead, and proceeds downward in a direct motion.
The women connect herself with the chair and the table

Chuck Stupka English Literature 7th March 4, 2015 Analyzing Polonius Shakespeare is known for
his fascinating characters. Hamlet, Romeo, Lady Macbeth, and Benedick are a few of his most
famous and developed characters. However one of the most thought provoking and unexplained
character is Polonius from the play The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Poloniusis a
complex character filled with knowledge and confidence, a wise man at the most but lacks the
ability to keep his mouth shut and at times quite dull. In Act I, scene iii Polonius says, Neither a

Also in Act I, scene iii he says, This above all: To thine own self be true (I, iii). Polonius tells
Laertes that no matter what happens while he is away do what he believes is right. When
thought about enough after finishing the play it seems as though it was foreshadowing the
effects of Polonius s death and how Laertes reacted. After hearing Polonius talk a fair amount it
becomes obvious that he is a wise man, but lacks the ability to shut his trap. In Act II, scene ii
Polonius says, Take this from this, if this be otherwise (I, ii). Polonius is telling the king that if he
is otherwise unable to find out why Hamlet is acting so crazy, then the king can remove Polonius s
head from his shoulders. This is the second time during this play Polonius has continued to run his
mouth without considering the consequences. Then again in Act II, scene ii he says, It shall do
well. But yet do I believe/the origin and commencement of his grief/sprung form neglected love (I,
ii). He tells the king that his plan would work, but Polonius still believes that the cause of Hamlets
madness is caused by unrequited love. This furthers the belief that Polonius is

19th Century American Realism Research Paper
Realism is a historical movement in figurative arts and literature from 1840 1870 80. The objective
was aimed at giving a truthful and impartial representation of the world. People were also expected
to give up ideas of constitutions and their mechanisms. Realism was a wide spread movement
involving painting, literature, and dramain several European countries. Some French realist
painters were going to look at are Daumier, Courbet and Millet. The radical shift was by artist
portraying ordinary people in everyday settings such as workshops, offices and fields. (Nochlin).
During this time most artwork were of royals and bourgeois socialites. Realist disapproved of
fictional and traditional subjects and believed that the only true subjects for art had to be found in
reality. Subjects are portrayed in a clear manner, without idealizing them. It was a rebellion
against the classic view of art, which suggested that life was more orderly than it really was, as
well as a rebellion against the romantic traditions in art, which suggested that life was linked to
emotional satisfaction. The Revolution resulted in more peasants leaving the country to go to the

Investigating the Relationship Between Superstious Belief...
In times of uncontrollability, there is evidence to suggest that individuals tend to invoke
superstious beliefs. Anecdotal evidence has also suggested that highly superstitious people believe
that they have a level of control over situations where they objectively have none. For example,
some people have lucky charms that they believe allow for a greater sense of perceived control of
external factors.
Locus of control has often been used to explain the relationship of perceived control and
superstious belief and has been dichotomized as internal or external (Rotter, 1966). Whereas an
internal locus of control is inherent of the belief that all events are due to internal dispositions, an
external locus of control believes that events are a result of other people, or chance/luck. This
concept is associated with the Learned helplessness explanation (Abramson et al., 1978; Maier
Seligman, 1976). What this explanation proposes is that participant s attribute the uncontrollability
of a situation to internal dispositions i.e., they display an internal locus of control, and, by
extension, denote failure as a result of not having any control over the situation. Contrastingly,
individuals who don t succumb to the learned helplessness effect are those who place failure
outside the realms of their own self. I.e., they present an external locus of control. This has been
validated by Dudley (1999), who found that participants with a higher level of superstition
demonstrated less of

Eating The Pepper Monologue
Eat it! Eat it! I dropped it in my mouth without a second thought, which probably wasn t wise but
hey, I was ten and then the war of spice and flavor began. That wasn t so bad I announced But it
turns out I spoke too soon, the burning sensation spreading like the plague in my mouth. The
delicious burn of a really good spiceor curry, that fiery goodness that makes you sweat and gives
you a great tingling sensation, is for many people one of life s greatest pleasures. Unfortunately, I
am not one of those people. So imagine my surprise when its scaly skin grazes my tongueand the
initial tasteis sweet. Wow, that wasn t so bad. I think to myself but it turns out i spoke to soon i

Do you want one? replied Jimmy. My brother tried one, he took the pepper and put the whole
thing in his mouth, but it didn t seem like it was hot to him. I guess when you re in our family
you re use to spices. So everyone else tried one but. I was debating with myself if I should try
one. Eating the pepper woud most certainly result in a heck of a lot discomfort but i would
certainly walk away from thr experience with an amazing story to tell and it s not pften that you
get a chance to eat one of the hottest peppers in the world. Andrew tried one he seems fine, and I
had spicy stuff before. But just because I had it doesn t mean I like spice and I don t, unless its
spices from America. Can I have one i say finnally mustering up the courage. Everyone started
staring at me. Then one by one they started chanting eat it! Eat it! I first smelled it the smell
stinging my nostrils and sinuses this pepper was hot enough to inflict a burning sensation with
out me even touching it I stood there wondering how I would be able to handle digesting the
whole thing staring at the pepper I thought about every possible outcome and about everything
that could go wrong with unlikely and foolish scenarios coming to mind because of my child
like imagination eventually I told myself there was only one way to know what the experience
would bring as a result i took a deep breath grabbed the ghost pepper by the stem and raised it to
my mouth with my head cocked backward slightly And then Without hesitation i dropped the
whole pepper in my mouth and let it rest on my tongue for a moment , initially the taste of the
pepper as it rolled around in my mouth was so sweet and flavorful in fact it was actually one of
the most delicious peppers I have ever tasted... until i bit down then the heat set in after a few
seconds of delay, a rush of intense heat swelled through my taste buds resting directly beneath the
pepper. the heat was sharp and prolonged to the extent that with

Horse Slaughter Persuasive Essay
There are 9.2 million tame horses and an additional 47,329 wild horses in the United States, while
only 2 million people own horses (Moss; Horses in the United States ). With that being said, it s
safe to say that the United States has a surplus of horses. One of the most controversial solutions for
the unwanted horses is slaughter. Horseslaughter has been around for decades, but due to changes
in societal views, the topic has ignited controversy. In today s society, horses are being viewed as
companion animals rather than livestock. The problem is that legally, horses are considered
livestock and the laws for the treatment of companion animals versus livestock are very different

If the government were to care for the 100,000 unwanted horses per year, the total cost for one
year would be $220 million (Gwinn). As an alternative for horse slaughter, groups are trying to
educate the public. The HSUS decided to create The HSUS Complete Guide to Equine Care,
which explains all of the responsibilities and price tags involved in owning a horse until the end
of its life. They are also trying to spread the word about ways to get the full horse experience,
without taking on the complete financial and physical responsibilities of owning a horse. Some
of these experiences include leasing, volunteering, attending shows, local 4 H Horse and Pony
Club events, or fostering rescue horses (Winegar, The Horse Slaughter Debate: Solving the

trucks and cruelly transported to slaughter and strung up in front of other terrified and dying

Summary OfIndian Is Beautiful By Homero Aridjis
It may seem hard to believe but there are still indigenous people out there still suffering from
corruption and oppression from their very own government. However the indigenous people are
not fighting them alone. In 1994 Chiapas Mexico, a movement began by a group that called
themselves the Zapatistas. The Zapatistas wanted change for the indigenous people for all the
years of oppression they have suffered by the government. Indian Is Beautiful a chapter by Homero
Aridjis gives examples on why indigenous peoplesvoices don t get recognized. He also talks about
how Mexico tried to be part of the future of the United Stateseconomy, by not having indigenous
people being involved in their economy is preventing them to grow. The Governments in Mexico
ignore the indigenous people as if they don t exist.
An essay named Indian Is Beautiful by Homero Aridjis he examines what indigenous people go
through by their government. He gives examples such as toxic dumps, highways being constructed,
military raids, and tourist complexes. This shows how the indigenous peoples homes don t get a
recognition for their space by the government or companies by them coming in and taking over. It
is time that our ethnic groups become part of the Mexican body economic and politic (143,144). In
this quote, it talks about on how the indigenous people become part of society to contribute for it

The Pros And Cons Of Fur
Wearing fur in Britain twenty ages ago would have been considered as an unlawful deed, where
people would criticize you and some would even assault you by throwing paint over you, but
recently the world has noticed a vast rise of the fur industry. Fur is a type of material used for
clothes taken from animals ranging from rabbits to seals and beyond, basically it s the skin of some
animals. Furis widely used by a good number of people aimed to satisfy numerous different types
of uses, such as clothes, blankets and occasionally even for decoration like carpets and curtains.
Animalfur is provided by high end and even normal stores, but in my opinion fur should not be
worn, for it represents the torture and suffering of innocent animals, as a... Show more content on

Humanity has lost its heart, tolerating these immense criminal acts and massive massacres
against beautiful creatures around our Mother Earth has even cost us more than just our hearts.
The fur industry is one of the cruelest industries in the world, making an animal go through so
much pain and suffering just to be sold for a very cheap price in dozen, as humans our job is to
protect these poor animals by raising awareness against how much agony and torture animals go
through, plus we must encourage people to boycott any brand that uses fur. The most killed
animal species for their fur are Minks, secondly foxes and then Chinchillas. They re kept
imprisoned and caged up in unsanitary and crowded cages helplessly watching their kind being
slaughtered mercilessly and then thrown into a pile of murdered animals, what s worse is that
they are in line for the mass slaughter of either having their skin ripped off their bodies or being
smashed against a wall and after that they will be disposed of just like a piece of a gum wrapper,
their death comes when the excruciating pain becomes too much to

The Importance Of Imagination
Patricia A. McKillip is quoted as saying, Imagination is the golden eyed monster that never sleeps.
It must be fed; it cannot be ignored. And, as children people believed in monsters that lurked in the
dim shadows of our bedrooms or hid beneath their bed; monsters that only existed in our
imaginations. As adults, the monsters no longer lurk, ready to pounce from darkness, but are their
imaginations running rampant. When faced with danger, the mindspirals down two different paths
prompted by fear. There is the path of reason. It is an analytical process taking into account of all
the known knowledge and present situation in a logical view. And then, there is imagination,
fantasies crafted by the mind. Imagination is prone to being unrealistic but is strongly influenced
by our emotions. Once the golden eyed imagination monster emerges from fear, it cannot be
ignored as stated in the quote. Imagination becomes vivid in its scenarios, producing the worst of
images, and the mind can do nothing but listen to the monster because it fears the worst over
what is realistic. Imagination overcomes reason when the mind fears its own fantasies to an
extent of overlooking reason. Imagination s strength in fear can be seen in the life and death
situation of the Sailors of Essex in Karen Thompson Walker s TedTalk, Roderick s debilitating fear
of the future in Edgar Allen Poe s Fallen House of Usher, and real life situations where the mind
believes in the unlikely death scenarios

This film highlights the importance of distinguishing among the various dementias that can occur
with aging. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate stage between the expected
cognitive decline of normal aging and the more serious decline of dementia. It can involve
problems with memory, language, thinking and judgment that are greater than normal age related
changes. If you have mild cognitive impairment, you may be aware that your memory or mental
function has slipped. Your family and close friends also may notice a change. But generally these
changes aren t severe enough to interfere with your day to day life and usual activities. some
people with mild cognitive impairment never get worse, and a few eventually get better. According
to a mayo clinic studies show that approximately 15% of individuals aged 70 90 have mild
cognitive impairment. They really try to remember something but they really can t. You lose your
train of thought when in a conversation it happens over the time of aging. Most of these patients

What Is The Mexican Mafia Prison Gang La Familia
The California drug cartel investigation essentially revealed how rooted and connected gang
members are within their own gang, yet, shockingly, this article displays how separate gangs were
able to unite and form relationships with one another.
In generic terms, I guess some may say that gangs tend to keep to themselves (meaning they keep
relationships with only those associated with that gang), group of people with similar ideas and
visions, simply, just up to no good. Interaction with other gangs would merely be for retaliation
purposes, initiation purposes (having to kill a member of a rival gang or some random innocent
civilian). Gangs are exceptionally territorial and the fact that the Mexican Mafia prison gang and

Humor In Smoke Signals
The film Smoke Signals uses both humor and music to help give Thomas more importance as
supposed to the book, where Thomas was a rather stagnant character. This is shown in the way the
music is played in the background while Thomas is telling his stories, which helps us to view
them in a different light breathing a new life into Thomas s character. Similarly humor is used in
the same manner, in which it helps to make Thomas character more relatable to the viewers. Also
in the movie, aside from the subtle change in his storytelling, we also get to see more of a
development in Thomas character, and how his actions help to change and influence those around
him; most noticeably Victor. This type of deep personal development is not seen with Thomas...

final scene we get to see Thomas as a dynamic character that can show a range of emotion. The
use of music in helps to make it more suspenseful, especially when Victors is dumping his ashes

The Examination Of Forensic Science
Science is frequently viewed as a way to examine the world and its contiguous atmosphere.
Coming from the word scientia, which is Latin and means knowledge, science is a methodical
readiness that creates and arranges information in the form of testable justifications and
expectations about the world that we know. Many ideas fall directly into this category. Because of
this, a lot of notions and concepts can be categorized as a science discipline. It is apparent that
certain science disciplines examine different features and functionalities of the universe. One
specific science that is exceptionally captivating and enticing is the idea of forensics. Forensic
scienceis a systematic technique of collecting and investigating evidence about previous events.
The idea of forensic science however is a comprehensive discipline and can be fragmented down
into numerous classifications. Forensic science can be distributed into such groupings as forensic
psychology, forensic anthropology, forensic biology, and even, but not limited to forensic biology.
The examination of forensic chemistry is unbelievably beneficial since it can be used in many
aspects in life and can even be considered as a career path. One of the prime professional openings

  • 2. The Flaws of Non-Governmental Organizations in Developing... The role of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the world today has been increasingly questioned in recent literature as people begin to recognize the flaws of our development aid industry. The article NGOs A Tainted History by Firoze Manji and Carl O Coill explores the history of the rise of NGOs in Africain order to demonstrate that their aim is to control and colonize Africa. Similarly, the novel Damned Nations: Geed, Guns, Armies Aidby Samantha Nutt emphasizes the patriarchal tendencies of the aid industry and the influences of the political objectives of donor countries with descriptions of her first hand experiences on the field. With the articles Challenging Indifference to Extreme Poverty: Considering Southern Perspectives on Global Citizenship and Change by Barbara Heron and International NGOs and the Aid Industry: constraints on international Solidarity by Molly Kane in mind, I considered the effects and roles of NGOs as development organizations and instruments of change. Whereas the compilation of stories in Generation NGO, edited by Alisha Apale and Valerie Stam, recollected individual experiences of development workers, highlighting the moral and ethical challenges they faced day to day. Analysis of the abovementioned readings allowed me to conclude that NGOs are destructive in the developing countries in which they are situated because they impose colonialist influences, are biased towards their political supporters, are ineffective when faced ... Unfortunately Joachim had to return to work as a general and was soon busy in Egypt with Caroline s older brother Napoleon. Caroline herself had gone off to one of the most elite schools for women in France at the time. During Murats time in Egypt he would play a key role in many battles including The battleof Alexandria and The battle of The Pyramids. He also led in the battle of Lake Tiberius by surprising the Ottoman Empireand taking control. It was during these dinners that Napoleon secured the trust of the soldiers who, in a couple of days would all but insure him the position of first consulate. Murat played an important role on the day of November 9th he was with Napoleon after he got thrown out of the council of Five Hundred. • 4. The Model Of Emergent Leadership Tuvia Bielski: The Model of Emergent Leadership in Edward Zwick s Defiance Have you ever been in a situation where you had to take charge, and take on leadership roles in a short period of time ? Some people may say that not everyone can be a leader. Some also believe that leaders are born with the necessary qualities, which make them successful as a leader. Others believe that leadership, like many other character traits, can be learned and developed through life. The debate depends on how you define leadership. A leader can be made in certain situations of survival. It can range from promoting what is right to perform social changes, or just to execute their own ideas. When you are a leader you gain a certain sense of independence, and pride that you started something. Therefore, when it s finished you get to show people that you were able to accomplish all of this. Watching the movie Defiance by Edward Zwick, I came across the character Tuvia Bielski. The movie unfolded a leader in front of our eyes. Tuvia became the leader of the partisan group. His characteristics that he possessed before he took his position, groomed him into the leader he was then. Tuvia Bielski became a leader because of the circumstances he found himself in. Defining Leadership Leadership means the period during which a person occupies the position of leader. A leader is someone who brings a group of people together, and directs them toward a common goal. Someone can easily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However after watching this documentary I really started to think about the hazards and potential risks that the players face to entertain and participate in. There was clear evidence of a sub optimal study performed by the NFL by doctors of limited experience and published finding of bias and inaccurate information. The NFL executives that knowingly withheld knowledge about the potential risks the players faced from players should be held accountable for their actions. Dr. Bennet Omalu, forensic pathologist and Dr. Ann McKee, director of neuropathology at the Veterans Administration in Massachusetts, discovered and headed scientific studies that publicized the unexpected findings of a potential link between concussions that NFL football players suffer from direct impacts on the field to a disease of the brain that causes depression, personality changes, and suicidal tendencies. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE is discovered and studied by these professionals, and published for peer review among colleagues, finding that suggest that there is a direct link to the concussions that are suffered by players to the incidence of suffering from CTE and its symptoms. According to findings in the autopsies of Mike Webster and Terry Long, two former Pittsburg Steelers NFL players performed by Dr. Omalu while employed as a medical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nora, Be nice now, Dr. Rank, and tomorrow you will see how beautifully I shall dance, and you can imagine I am doing it all for you. In his article published in Harvard Business Review Blog in May 2010, he establishes the importance and effectiveness of single tasking. He states that multitasking, in fact, reduces our productivity, being the reason why it isn t as useful as people believe it is. As well, he argues that by not multitaskingpeople end up being unstressed, patient, and more useful with their time; demonstrating his opposition towards multitasking. Bregman implies the importance of unitasking by emphasizing the positive impact it had on his family, building credibility with his personal experiences as a CEO, and presenting facts. For Bregman, single tasking entails an improvement in the working area and personal life. By talking about his experiences as a CEO while multitasking, he demonstrates to the audience that he wasn t being efficient enough since when [he] eventually refocused on the call, [he] realized [he... Descartes Arguments for Substance Dualism Does Descartes provide a convincing argument for the claim that mind and matter are distinct substances Descartes Argument For Dualism In his Meditations Rene Descartes aimed to reconstruct the whole of science by trying to prove the distinction between mind and matter. He gives an argument from doubt, and another from conceivability. I will give a brief summary of the foundations Descartes builds his thesis on, and then looking at his arguments and whether they are capable of persuading us that dualism is a logical stance to hold. To what extent if any is Descartes successful in showing there is a real distinction between mind and body In Descartes Meditations, Descartes aims to reshape the whole of science by starting from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus Descartes premises are false and fail to convince us of substance dualism. Moreover, Descartes relies on having a thorough knowledge of mind and body. We may conclude with Descartes that thought is necessary to having a mind, and materiality is necessary to having a body, it does not inevitably follow that there is an entity whose sole nature is to think. Descartes is limited by his subjective viewpoint that it could not be the case that extension could be another property of mind. He needs to prove the stronger argument that it is not possible for the mind to have extension as one of it s properties. Descartes tries to make this proof in his Divisibility Argument: Similar to this is the Argument from Distinctness which argues for the logical possibility of separating mind from body. To do this, mind and body would have to be distinct and thus it would prove both things. I can imagine myself as a thinking thing existing apart from the body (as shown by the different essences in the argument from essence.). It is conceivable that a thinking thing can exist without a body It is possible that a thinking thing can exist without a body A thinking thing is not a body The first premise has some major issues if we refer back to our objections to the argument from essence. • 12. Disney And Female Stereotypes Of Women In Disney For decades Disney has given the wrong impression of female gender roles. Today many of the aspects such as women being the weaker sex and set roles for each denomination have not changed as much as the society thinks. Looking at male and female characters in animations, one can see how those two genders are portrayed differently in terms of their roles. In this case, Disney has crossed the line portraying genderstereotypes to their films, especially stereotypes of women. Disney films are creating major problems by teaching society how women should act and look. In a research made by Hanes, Stephanie from The Christian Science Monitor , She decided to research the princess phenomenon, and what she found worried her. They purport to portray reality; strive to showcase an unbiased viewpoint; endeavour to tell a truthful story. However, this goal is rarely achieved. Directors create documentaries in such a way they can never portray the entire truth. Filmmakers manipulate numerous techniques such as interviews, footage, and editing to construct their version of the truth. They depict reality in their perspective about the topic they wish to exploit. A remarkably influential tool filmmakers utilise to portray a version of reality is their assortment of interviewees. The movement of molecules in a transmitting medium caused by a disturbance results in pressure oscillations above (compressions) and below (rarefactions) the ambient pressure level. The oscillation of sound pressure variations is referred to as a sound wave. A sound wave will move through an ideal medium longitudinally and omnidirectionally. The oscillation frequency of a sound wave determines the pitch of a sound, which is measured in Hertz (Hz). The healthy human ear can typically discern frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hz. The amplitude of the pressure oscillations of a sound wave describes the amount of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hard surfaces such as smooth wood or metal often reflect sound waves well but attenuate sound poorly. Conversely, soft, porous surfaces usually reflect sound waves poorly but attenuate sound waves well. Reflected sound waves can increase the overall SPL in an area, as the reflected wave essentially becomes an additional sound source. Sound behaves predictably in the far field (i.e., far enough away from individual sound sources relative to the size of the sound sources) and most sound measurement equipment can only accurately measure SPLs in the far field. The measurement of sound generated by a source within a reflective chamber (reverberant field) is more difficult because the large number of reflections increase the overall SPL if the measurement is also made within the reflective chamber. SPLs measured in the reverberant field of the ear cannot directly be compared to SPLs in the free field without first compensating for the higher SPLs at certain frequencies caused by the resonance of the ear canal. 2.2AUDITION: Audition, or the perception of sound, is accomplished via the complex transformation from sound pressure waves to electrical nerve impulses and interpretation in the brain. The human ear is divided into three main parts; the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear (see Figure 2.1). The outer ear consists of the pinna (or auricle), which is the visible portion of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Theories of Marx In this seminar, I seek to analyse, discuss and evaluate the theories of Marx. Firstly, I will analyse the relationship between human action and social structure. Having completed the analysis, I will move on further to discuss and exemplify his theory of alienation. Lastly I will evaluate his theory of false consciousness. Question 1 Human action and social structure are extremely prevalent in the works of Marx. In terms of the workers and capitalist classes, he postulates that they are not free but rather actors of the capitalist system. The workers are forced into labour to make a living, the force of circumstance (Elster, 1986:29) while the capitalist is forced to keep themselves in business. Elster (1986:29) argues that this is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He has thus become alienated from normality and has become an appendage of the machine. In the movie, Daens we see the women and children working on the machines in the factory, not able to communicate amongst themselves and in the case of the government coming to investigate them, they weren t able to converse in French as they could only speak Flemish, thus further enforcing the disconnection factor. In order to become un alienated and work toward becoming the whole man where everyone is part of one class, is able to support their family and their every need and has enough free time and is still able to work as Marx wished in his efforts, the workers would have to take risks to get out of their situation and keep trying to overthrow capitalism, as in the case of the movie, Daens where we witness them taking the dead child out on to the streets. This risk however is quickly averted by the capitalists as they have the means, the money and the knowledge to get their workers back to work. They simply call in a favour from the local police and then fire all those who marched. The instigator or initial risk taker (the woman who met Daens) is then punished further with rape as a means of enforcing their domination over the working class. Question 3 False consciousness is termed in the context of the work of Marx as a statement of our existence, it is not our consciousness that determines our existence, but ... Some are more popular and well known than others, with a few of the main world religions being Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. With each religion, one can be slightly similar to one and completely opposite in beliefs to another; this is seen in the idea of the afterlife, in which Buddhismfocuses on the idea of rebirth and awakening, whereas Hinduism and Jainism both believe in the idea of reincarnation until liberation. Buddhism is seen as a way of life rather than a form of religion that needs to be closely followed and constantly practiced. The idea of enlightenment carries through one s entire lifetime in an attempt to reach nirvana, which is an end to all suffering. A person s lifetime is spent being faithful and relying on karma to eventually achieve nirvana and enlightenment, in which people embark on the path of awakening. The awakening is a very crucial aspect of the Buddhist religion, as it was Buddha s own personal awakening and understanding of how the world works, in which he passed it on to be believed and understood by others. It s closely related to other religions in the way that rebirth and reincarnation are the beliefs surrounding the idea of the afterlife, however Buddhism in particular is an anatta tradition, or not self, which often sets it apart from other religions. This complex ideal entails that one s external self, consciousness, feelings ... • 23. Poets Present Difficult Relationships in The Farmer’s... Charlotte Mew explores the theme of lack of intimacy during the course of her poem, The Farmers Bride. Various techniques are used to represent the stilted relationship the speaker and his maid succumb to. Likewise, The Manhunt, written by Simon Armitage uses various metaphors and semantic fields of war and anguish to illustrate the speaker s yearning to feel the hurt her partner is experiencing and take the pain away. Although, the ambiguous ending doesn t satisfy this. The six stanzas in The Farmer s Bride are of various lengths, with the meter per line varying. Mew uses this as a representation of the in balance in the relationship of the farmer and his bride. During the last stanza the farmer is presented to feel sympathetic for his bride and possibly regretful for the animalistic manner he treated her throughout as she sleeps up in the attic there alone, poor maid Tis but a stair betwixt us. This is structured in a stair way format, possibly implying the farmer s now determination to work on his currently failed relationship. Relating this to the stairs which distances them, is highlighting that they are on different levels from each other, but, despite this he is willing to try. Usually, we all eat bread when it is stuffed with meat and cheese, but most can t resist the taste of certain breads without the added accompaniments. Sour Dough bread, being a popular favorite, is most commonly made by preparing your starter dough, feeding the starter dough, then finally kneading and baking the loaves. The first step is making the starter dough. Before starting, make sure you have a large, non metallic bowl for mixing. Making sure your bowls are non metallic ensures that the dough will not ruin. Mix together dry yeast, two cups of warm water, and two cups of all purpose flour. Once you have mixed all of your ingredients, obtain the mix with a loose seal and leave the starter dough in a warm place to ferment for four to eight days and check on it occasionally. • 27. How Water And Sunlight Affects Plant Growth Review of Literature Introduction How Water and Sunlight Affect Plant Growth Photosynthesis is how water and sunlight affect plant growth. According to The Merriam Webster Dictionary the definition of photosynthesis is the process by which chlorophyll containing plants make carbohydrates from water and from carbon dioxide in the air in the presence of light . This basically means photosynthesis is the process that all green plants undertake to receive their needed food and energy using sunlight, water (H2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2). So water and sunlight affects plant growth by helping the process of photosynthesis, which then helps the plant receive energy and food. Photosynthesis is essential, not only for plants, but all living things especially humans. As stated before, photosynthesis helps plants receive their needed food and energy, which helps them grow and stay alive. Photosynthesis is not just helpful for plants though. Plants produce various things we use in life such as wood, paper, food, lumber, fuel, etc. That is not the only thing plants produce for us. They produce oxygen for all human life and other living things to breathe. Without photosynthesis there would be little plant life. Without plants there would be little human life. Therefore, photosynthesis is extremely vital for all forms of life. The process of photosynthesis is pretty complex. Sunlight and water are both very crucial elements of this process. It would visit a friend or a family member of a Irish person who was dying. People are afraid of them because it shows us our mortality. We are afraid of death because we do not know what is on the other side, so naturally we would be afraid of the harbinger of death. The origin of the banshee is intertwined with death as it is in its spectre form. There are many legends that the banshee came from. It ranges from women who took alcohol to mourn the death a member of a powerful family to ancient goddesses that the Christian church turned into a demon. No matter what the origin ... The family would pay the woman, who was normally and alcoholic, in drinks to cry at the grave a their deceased loved one to make it seem like they were very respected. The Christian church did not like this, so came about the story of the banshee. One theory of the banshee is that they are being punished for their insincere mourning and alcoholism. They haunt a family and not a place unlike many ghosts. The banshee probably haunts the family out of loyalty to them from their life of mourning for the family. The origin of the banshee goes farther than that, it has a more supernatural myth to it. In Irish myth, the banshee is considered a fairy and so the church says that is it a demon wailing that it is losing souls to heaven. It is said that the banshee comes from the ancient god race known as the Tuatha De Danann. According to Carolyn White in A History of Irish Fairies, The Tuatha De Danann, the divine folk descended from the mother goddess Dana or Danu, were gods from Greece (some say, of the Golden race) who came to Ireland enshrouded by a magical mist which hid the sun and their appearance for three days and nights... • 34. Investigating the Relationship Between Superstious Belief... In times of uncontrollability, there is evidence to suggest that individuals tend to invoke superstious beliefs. Anecdotal evidence has also suggested that highly superstitious people believe that they have a level of control over situations where they objectively have none. For example, some people have lucky charms that they believe allow for a greater sense of perceived control of external factors. Locus of control has often been used to explain the relationship of perceived control and superstious belief and has been dichotomized as internal or external (Rotter, 1966). Whereas an internal locus of control is inherent of the belief that all events are due to internal dispositions, an external locus of control believes that events are a result of other people, or chance/luck. This concept is associated with the Learned helplessness explanation (Abramson et al., 1978; Maier Seligman, 1976). What this explanation proposes is that participant s attribute the uncontrollability of a situation to internal dispositions i.e., they display an internal locus of control, and, by extension, denote failure as a result of not having any control over the situation. Contrastingly, individuals who don t succumb to the learned helplessness effect are those who place failure outside the realms of their own self. I.e., they present an external locus of control. • 49. The Importance Of Imagination Patricia A. McKillip is quoted as saying, Imagination is the golden eyed monster that never sleeps. It must be fed; it cannot be ignored. And, as children people believed in monsters that lurked in the dim shadows of our bedrooms or hid beneath their bed; monsters that only existed in our imaginations. As adults, the monsters no longer lurk, ready to pounce from darkness, but are their imaginations running rampant. When faced with danger, the mindspirals down two different paths prompted by fear. There is the path of reason. It is an analytical process taking into account of all the known knowledge and present situation in a logical view. And then, there is imagination, fantasies crafted by the mind. Imagination is prone to being unrealistic but is strongly influenced by our emotions. Once the golden eyed imagination monster emerges from fear, it cannot be ignored as stated in the quote. Imagination becomes vivid in its scenarios, producing the worst of images, and the mind can do nothing but listen to the monster because it fears the worst over what is realistic. Imagination overcomes reason when the mind fears its own fantasies to an extent of overlooking reason. Imagination s strength in fear can be seen in the life and death situation of the Sailors of Essex in Karen Thompson Walker s TedTalk, Roderick s debilitating fear of the future in Edgar Allen Poe s Fallen House of Usher, and real life situations where the mind believes in the unlikely death scenarios ...
