12. Visit Report: IEEE Photonic Society DL program (May–June 2018)
This summer (May 11 – June 22, 2018), Prof. Ghanshyam Singh, ‘DL’ awardee from IEEE Photonics Society for term 2017-18, a Senior
Member of IEEE and Professor of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of
Technology Jaipur (India) visited 12 Universities located in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and USA. During these visits, Dr. Singh
delivered ‘DL’ talks on Photonic Integrated Devices and Systems: Technology for next Generation Telecom Networks and attended other
technical and informal sessions. Dr. Singh lectures were based on latest trends in the field of Integrated Photonics. The talk began with
the evolution of photonic technologies over the years and about the research that is being carried out in the direction of Integrated
Photonics and relevant thrust areas. Apart from recent trends in these areas, the topics that Dr. Singh covered were mainly related to
the fabrication and performance issues of integrated optical devices based on Silicon and III-IV group composite semiconductor
platforms. He also explained working principles for many optical devices e.g. switches, couplers, splitters, etc. and techniques to
analyze their performance parameters. Principle motive of direct interactions with PhD scholars and students from visited
Universities/IEEE chapters was to encourage them to work in one of these most sought after research areas so as to contribute for
betterment of integrated photonics. At the end of the presentations, He welcomed queries from the attendees. Dr. Singh and faculty
members of various IEEE PS Chapters also went into an informal discussion about the possibilities of collaborative research between
Indian research labs and associated Universities. Opportunities for joint research projects and exchange of students between the
universities and research groups were also explored.
