Film title: The Fly___________________________________________ Duration: 6 minutes__________________________
Micro Features -Describekey features and explain what meaning is given: Macro Features - Explain whatthe micro elements suggest about:
Mise en scene (e.g. setting, costume, performance, colour, props and proxemics.)
The settingis quite bleakand dull making it feel more real and gritty, the
costumesare alsoworn out making the characters feel real and the world
more livedin. The performance by the driver isvery relatable and real as he
acts how everyone else wouldinthe situation. The coloursare veryworn out
and more like real life.Andthe props are very genre specificwitha lot of
weaponsto juxtapose the comedy aspect.
Genre (What are the key themes? Iconography?)
The Flyis a dark comedy as the filmis about a getaway drivergetting
annoyedby a fly inhis car, an example of the dark comedyis when he gets
a toothpickthrough his lip.The fact that it is a crime played for laughsalso
makes it a dark comedy.
Camerawork e.g. shot types, angles, movement, composition, lightingand depth of
field)
There are a lot of close ups and extreme close ups to show the characters
reaction to the fly,and also show the flymore intimately,it alsoallows the
filmto feel more personal and close to the character. The movementisslow
at the start but as he gets more frustratedthe movementand camera work
gets more erratic and gritty. The lightingis alsovery natural to give a real look
to the film.
Narrative (Whatevents are shown? Are there any conflicts/oppositions? Narrative
structure? Use of dialogue? Character development)
In the short filmthe getaway drivergets annoyedat a flybeingin his car
and he is continuallytrying to kill hit, this distracts him so much that by the
endhe shoots up the getaway car resultinginthe robbersnot beingable to
get away. The narrative is structured and in chronological order.
Editing (Paceand rhythm? Motivation for the transition? Creating relationships? )
Slow pace at start but escalatesas the driver gets more frustrated with the
fly,it then slowsdown when the robbers see what he has done to the car.
This allowsthe viewerto understand the drivers feelingsandthoughts
creating a more well roundedcharacter who eventhough is a criminal is a
also very relateable.
Representation (Howare characters, places or events represented?)
You couldsuggest that the filmrepresentscriminalsas beingstupid, since
the drivereasilygets distractedby the fly and by the endof the filmtries
shootingit with a gun. The area they are in looksvery gritty presentingit in
a real way. However, the eventsare presentedas comedicevenwith the
underlyingeventsofthe robbery.
Sound (e.g. music,dialogue,voiceover, effects)
No dialogue from the driver at all, all you hear from him are frustrated grunts
and heavy breathing, also his pain whenstabbing hislip with the toothpick.
The sound ofthe fly isvery important as it usuallycreates the comedy in the
filmand also helpsshow the fliespresence nonvissualy.Onlymusic at the
endof the filmto hit the punchline/endinghome.
Audience (Whoisthe targetaudience andhowisthisevident?)
The target audience is adult male as the main character seems quite
relatable with hisreaction towards flies, the filmisalso very graphic so it is
not meant for a youngeraudience. The fact that all the characters are male
could thensuggest that the filmis aimedat men.
Credits and titles (Any text elements, don’t forget idents and ordering)
Text at the beginningshowingthe title of the filmand credits at the end of
Spectatorship (Emotional response? Preferred and alternativereadings?)
You are most likelymeantto feel badfor the driver as at one point he
the filmshowingwho made it. Injureshimselfwithhis toothpick. However, since he is a criminal and what
he isdoing is quite stupid, the audience wouldoftenfeel like theyare
laughingat a fool. The preferredreadingisprobably that you are supposed
to find the characters problemfunny.
Film title: The Ellington kid___________________________________________ Duration: 4 minutes 50__________________________
Micro Features -Describekey features and explain what meaning is given: Macro Features - Explain whatthe micro elements suggest about:
Mise en scene (e.g. setting, costume, performance, colour, props and proxemics.)
Settingis in a kebab shop, it looksvery real and the settingis very real
lookingand shows the characters in a more natural way. The costumesare
everydayclothesmaking the filmfeel real. The props are everydayitems but
also look quite deadlyespeciallythe knives.
Genre (What are the key themes? Iconography?)
It is a thriller/dark comedyand this is shown as the story beingtold is quite
tense and thrillerlike but when the friendrevealshe is lyingit becomes
more of a dark comedy,up to the end where it is hintedthat the kebab
shop ownercould of killedthe attackers.
Camerawork e.g. shot types, angles, movement, composition, lightingand depth of
field)
Mediumshots showingthe two friendseating, close ups showingthe cooks
making food at the start of the film.
Long shots showingthe characters runningaway and the kid layingon the
floor. Also, close ups of the kebab shop ownerspicking up the knives.
Mediumclose ups showingthe attackers surroundedand scared. The lighting
is quite dark whenthe story is beingtold, but more natural whenthe two
characters are eatingfood.
Narrative (Whatevents are shown? Are there any conflicts/oppositions? Narrative
structure? Use of dialogue? Character development)
Is an unstructurednarrative as most of the filmis shown in flashback, with
a lotof back and forth betweenthe two times
Dialogue is mostly usedto narrate the story of the Ellingtonkid and also
show the relationshipbetweenthe twofriends.
Editing (Paceand rhythm? Motivation for the transition? Creatingrelationships? )
Whenfirsttellingthe story, there are a lot ofquick cuts. But the pace is
slowerlater on to build tensionwhenthe part about the kid enteringthe
shop and the ownersgetting ready to fightthe attackers istold.
Representation (Howare characters, places or events represented?)
The characters are shownas close friendswhich separatesthem from the
harsh and dark story of the Ellingtonkid. The eventsare shown as dark
throughout but the locationturns from a safe place to one that oftenfeels
horror like.
Sound (e.g. music,dialogue,voiceover, effects)
The filmhas a lot of dialogue as the filmis narrated by two friends in a food
shop as one of the friendstellsthe story of the Ellington.Dialogue is also used
for comedy at the endof the film.(all voice over) soundeffectsof the chef’s
kniveswhenthey sharpen themand alsonoisesfrom the kitchen, for
example the fryer. Eerie music playingwhenthe kid has beenstabbed and is
running away and alsolaying on the floorof the shop.
Audience (Whoisthe targetaudience andhowisthisevident?)
The target audiencesare both teenagersand young adults,as the story is
quite dark but the jokingrelationshipbetweenthe friendsisquite relatable
for teenagers, alsothe comedy aspect couldintrigue them.
Credits and titles (Any text elements, don’t forget idents and ordering) Spectatorship (Emotional response? Preferred and alternativereadings?)
Text at the beginningshowingthe name of the short film, followedbyit
saying this isbased on a short film(kindof),there are also creditsat the end
showingthat the filmhas ended.
The filmis supposedto feel quite funnydue to the friendjoking about the
story, howeverit is also meant to be horrifying as the story could have been
true, so it leavesthe audience on edge whenthe filmfinishes.
Film title: The Arrival___________________________________________ Duration: 4 minutes__________________________
Micro Features -Describekey features and explain what meaning is created: Macro Features - Explain whatthe micro elements suggest about:
Mise en scene (e.g. setting, costume, performance, colour, props and proxemics.)
The settingis very natural and is just an average café, the costume look
natural with the characters wearingwarm clotheslinkingto the cold lookof
the worldand the film, the performance looks very natural with the character
reacting well to the voice over and everyone inthe background looking
realisticto the situation. The colour is very cold lookingbut also very real.
Genre (What are the key themes? Iconography?)
The genre is a drama/slice of life story as it just followsa character and the
thoughts inside herhead as she waits for someone to arrive, nothing extra
ordinary happensit’s just a filmabout the human thoughts and lives.
This is shownthrough the natural lookof the filmand also the cold looking
lightingthroughout.
Camerawork (e.g. shot types, angles, movement, composition, lightingand depth of
field)
Supposedlyone single take that goes from a long shot but slowlyzooms in to
become a close up on the main characters face. This showsthe character
gettingmore involvedand engrossedintheir thoughtsthan the worldaround
them whichis also shown whenshe pours too much coffee inher mug. The
lightingis quite dim givingthe film a cold feel.
Narrative (Whatevents are shown? Are there any conflicts/oppositions? Do you
get a sense of the full film’s beginning-middle-end?)
The conflicttakes place inthe main characters headas she thinks about her
future child and what theywill look like, also what she wants to say to its
potential father as she waits for himin the café to give him the news. The
main character also goeson a journeyfrom beingunsure what to say to
beingsort of confidentwhenhe arrives showinga clearbeginningmiddle
and end to the film.
Editing (Paceand rhythm? Motivation for the transition? Creatingrelationships? )
The editingisvery slow paced and there are not many transitionsin the film.
The slowpace allows the viewerto getmore in the headof the main
character and tell the battle that is goingon inher head.
Representation (Howare characters, places or events represented?)
The characters, the location and the eventare all presentedina natural
way as the locationis relatable as it is somewhere mostpeople would
meet, the fact that she is worriedwhat to say is also a similarway that
most people wouldand the eventis veryrelatable for most people.
Sound (Whatdiegetic and non-diegetic sounds areused? Mood? Key dialogue?)
Only diegeticsoundsofthe café and her thoughts, no musicmakes the film
feel more real and personal to the character. Silence whencharacter isin
deepthought. Voice overused to show what she is thinking.
Audience (Whoisthe targetaudience andhowisthisevident?)
Adult womenas the main character is female and the plot is something
more relatable to adults than a youngeraudience.
Credits and titles (Any text elements, don’t forget idents and releaseinfo)
Title of the filmat the start introducingthe name of the film, and the credits
are at the end of it showingwho made it and the actors inthe film, signifying
the endof the story.
Spectatorship (Emotional response? Preferred and alternativereadings?)
Supposedto relate to the worried woman as she is ina common situation
for some people, howeveryou couldfeel reallybad for her as she has been
put in an awkward situation.

  • 1. Film title: The Fly___________________________________________ Duration: 6 minutes__________________________ Micro Features -Describekey features and explain what meaning is given: Macro Features - Explain whatthe micro elements suggest about: Mise en scene (e.g. setting, costume, performance, colour, props and proxemics.) The settingis quite bleakand dull making it feel more real and gritty, the costumesare alsoworn out making the characters feel real and the world more livedin. The performance by the driver isvery relatable and real as he acts how everyone else wouldinthe situation. The coloursare veryworn out and more like real life.Andthe props are very genre specificwitha lot of weaponsto juxtapose the comedy aspect. Genre (What are the key themes? Iconography?) The Flyis a dark comedy as the filmis about a getaway drivergetting annoyedby a fly inhis car, an example of the dark comedyis when he gets a toothpickthrough his lip.The fact that it is a crime played for laughsalso makes it a dark comedy. Camerawork e.g. shot types, angles, movement, composition, lightingand depth of field) There are a lot of close ups and extreme close ups to show the characters reaction to the fly,and also show the flymore intimately,it alsoallows the filmto feel more personal and close to the character. The movementisslow at the start but as he gets more frustratedthe movementand camera work gets more erratic and gritty. The lightingis alsovery natural to give a real look to the film. Narrative (Whatevents are shown? Are there any conflicts/oppositions? Narrative structure? Use of dialogue? Character development) In the short filmthe getaway drivergets annoyedat a flybeingin his car and he is continuallytrying to kill hit, this distracts him so much that by the endhe shoots up the getaway car resultinginthe robbersnot beingable to get away. The narrative is structured and in chronological order. Editing (Paceand rhythm? Motivation for the transition? Creating relationships? ) Slow pace at start but escalatesas the driver gets more frustrated with the fly,it then slowsdown when the robbers see what he has done to the car. This allowsthe viewerto understand the drivers feelingsandthoughts creating a more well roundedcharacter who eventhough is a criminal is a also very relateable. Representation (Howare characters, places or events represented?) You couldsuggest that the filmrepresentscriminalsas beingstupid, since the drivereasilygets distractedby the fly and by the endof the filmtries shootingit with a gun. The area they are in looksvery gritty presentingit in a real way. However, the eventsare presentedas comedicevenwith the underlyingeventsofthe robbery. Sound (e.g. music, dialogue, voiceover, effects) No dialogue from the driver at all, all you hear from him are frustrated grunts and heavy breathing, also his pain whenstabbing hislip with the toothpick. The sound ofthe fly isvery important as it usuallycreates the comedy in the filmand also helpsshow the fliespresence nonvissualy.Onlymusic at the endof the filmto hit the punchline/endinghome. Audience (Whoisthe targetaudience andhowisthisevident?) The target audience is adult male as the main character seems quite relatable with hisreaction towards flies, the filmisalso very graphic so it is not meant for a youngeraudience. The fact that all the characters are male could thensuggest that the filmis aimedat men. Credits and titles (Any text elements, don’t forget idents and ordering) Text at the beginningshowingthe title of the filmand credits at the end of Spectatorship (Emotional response? Preferred and alternativereadings?) You are most likelymeantto feel badfor the driver as at one point he
  • 2. the filmshowingwho made it. Injureshimselfwithhis toothpick. However, since he is a criminal and what he isdoing is quite stupid, the audience wouldoftenfeel like theyare laughingat a fool. The preferredreadingisprobably that you are supposed to find the characters problemfunny. Film title: The Ellington kid___________________________________________ Duration: 4 minutes 50__________________________ Micro Features -Describekey features and explain what meaning is given: Macro Features - Explain whatthe micro elements suggest about: Mise en scene (e.g. setting, costume, performance, colour, props and proxemics.) Settingis in a kebab shop, it looksvery real and the settingis very real lookingand shows the characters in a more natural way. The costumesare everydayclothesmaking the filmfeel real. The props are everydayitems but also look quite deadlyespeciallythe knives. Genre (What are the key themes? Iconography?) It is a thriller/dark comedyand this is shown as the story beingtold is quite tense and thrillerlike but when the friendrevealshe is lyingit becomes more of a dark comedy,up to the end where it is hintedthat the kebab shop ownercould of killedthe attackers. Camerawork e.g. shot types, angles, movement, composition, lightingand depth of field) Mediumshots showingthe two friendseating, close ups showingthe cooks making food at the start of the film. Long shots showingthe characters runningaway and the kid layingon the floor. Also, close ups of the kebab shop ownerspicking up the knives. Mediumclose ups showingthe attackers surroundedand scared. The lighting is quite dark whenthe story is beingtold, but more natural whenthe two characters are eatingfood. Narrative (Whatevents are shown? Are there any conflicts/oppositions? Narrative structure? Use of dialogue? Character development) Is an unstructurednarrative as most of the filmis shown in flashback, with a lotof back and forth betweenthe two times Dialogue is mostly usedto narrate the story of the Ellingtonkid and also show the relationshipbetweenthe twofriends. Editing (Paceand rhythm? Motivation for the transition? Creatingrelationships? ) Whenfirsttellingthe story, there are a lot ofquick cuts. But the pace is slowerlater on to build tensionwhenthe part about the kid enteringthe shop and the ownersgetting ready to fightthe attackers istold. Representation (Howare characters, places or events represented?) The characters are shownas close friendswhich separatesthem from the harsh and dark story of the Ellingtonkid. The eventsare shown as dark throughout but the locationturns from a safe place to one that oftenfeels horror like. Sound (e.g. music, dialogue, voiceover, effects) The filmhas a lot of dialogue as the filmis narrated by two friends in a food shop as one of the friendstellsthe story of the Ellington.Dialogue is also used for comedy at the endof the film.(all voice over) soundeffectsof the chef’s kniveswhenthey sharpen themand alsonoisesfrom the kitchen, for example the fryer. Eerie music playingwhenthe kid has beenstabbed and is running away and alsolaying on the floorof the shop. Audience (Whoisthe targetaudience andhowisthisevident?) The target audiencesare both teenagersand young adults,as the story is quite dark but the jokingrelationshipbetweenthe friendsisquite relatable for teenagers, alsothe comedy aspect couldintrigue them. Credits and titles (Any text elements, don’t forget idents and ordering) Spectatorship (Emotional response? Preferred and alternativereadings?)
  • 3. Text at the beginningshowingthe name of the short film, followedbyit saying this isbased on a short film(kindof),there are also creditsat the end showingthat the filmhas ended. The filmis supposedto feel quite funnydue to the friendjoking about the story, howeverit is also meant to be horrifying as the story could have been true, so it leavesthe audience on edge whenthe filmfinishes. Film title: The Arrival___________________________________________ Duration: 4 minutes__________________________ Micro Features -Describekey features and explain what meaning is created: Macro Features - Explain whatthe micro elements suggest about: Mise en scene (e.g. setting, costume, performance, colour, props and proxemics.) The settingis very natural and is just an average café, the costume look natural with the characters wearingwarm clotheslinkingto the cold lookof the worldand the film, the performance looks very natural with the character reacting well to the voice over and everyone inthe background looking realisticto the situation. The colour is very cold lookingbut also very real. Genre (What are the key themes? Iconography?) The genre is a drama/slice of life story as it just followsa character and the thoughts inside herhead as she waits for someone to arrive, nothing extra ordinary happensit’s just a filmabout the human thoughts and lives. This is shownthrough the natural lookof the filmand also the cold looking lightingthroughout. Camerawork (e.g. shot types, angles, movement, composition, lightingand depth of field) Supposedlyone single take that goes from a long shot but slowlyzooms in to become a close up on the main characters face. This showsthe character gettingmore involvedand engrossedintheir thoughtsthan the worldaround them whichis also shown whenshe pours too much coffee inher mug. The lightingis quite dim givingthe film a cold feel. Narrative (Whatevents are shown? Are there any conflicts/oppositions? Do you get a sense of the full film’s beginning-middle-end?) The conflicttakes place inthe main characters headas she thinks about her future child and what theywill look like, also what she wants to say to its potential father as she waits for himin the café to give him the news. The main character also goeson a journeyfrom beingunsure what to say to beingsort of confidentwhenhe arrives showinga clearbeginningmiddle and end to the film. Editing (Paceand rhythm? Motivation for the transition? Creatingrelationships? ) The editingisvery slow paced and there are not many transitionsin the film. The slowpace allows the viewerto getmore in the headof the main character and tell the battle that is goingon inher head. Representation (Howare characters, places or events represented?) The characters, the location and the eventare all presentedina natural way as the locationis relatable as it is somewhere mostpeople would meet, the fact that she is worriedwhat to say is also a similarway that most people wouldand the eventis veryrelatable for most people. Sound (Whatdiegetic and non-diegetic sounds areused? Mood? Key dialogue?) Only diegeticsoundsofthe café and her thoughts, no musicmakes the film feel more real and personal to the character. Silence whencharacter isin deepthought. Voice overused to show what she is thinking. Audience (Whoisthe targetaudience andhowisthisevident?) Adult womenas the main character is female and the plot is something more relatable to adults than a youngeraudience. Credits and titles (Any text elements, don’t forget idents and releaseinfo) Title of the filmat the start introducingthe name of the film, and the credits are at the end of it showingwho made it and the actors inthe film, signifying the endof the story. Spectatorship (Emotional response? Preferred and alternativereadings?) Supposedto relate to the worried woman as she is ina common situation for some people, howeveryou couldfeel reallybad for her as she has been put in an awkward situation.
