Welcome & Good Morning – pause for energy and enthusiasm
My Name is JOHN ROSE and I am a Protagonist
Before we start a couple of house keeping items (Don’t you just love wen people do this ) – If I say something that you don’t understand or need clarification on – please stop me and ask. Are there any HR or Careers people in the audience – I apologise in advance I will upset you… and finally – Are there any Identical Twins in the audience?
So we can begin – don’t worry about the Frog – Yet!
I am not going to provide you with The Magic Bullet or Secret Receipt for Success – Boo Hoo – 1 Size does not fit ALL no matter what other Engineers may tell you.
I read that U of Waterloo Careers Service have a 99.1% success rate in Co-Op/Internship placements (I would hope so that is what you are paying your fees for) – however when asked they, along with other Educational establishments can not provide how many Graduates successfully secured a job in their chosen career?....
So I want to try and help you…improve your odds in that regards The first thing we are going to do is…..
Get you to stop using the Cookie Cutter approach…
** Fact: 66,000 undergrads currently studying STEM subject in Canada (Source Engineering Council Canada – Ottawa)
Approx; 7500 graduating and entering the workforce in 2015, and Approx; 3000 will move directly into post grad studies (MSc or College Diploma)
25% of these are un or under employed rate for graduates in 2014
Congratulations – your are ahead of your colleagues who have not attended this conference – one step closer to success for you
People say they don’t have enough time – Guess what that is BS – what they mean is = I am lousey at time management and prioritizing – as students you know the value of good time management – now I want you to utilize your time better….
I want you to allocate 10 mins (15 ideally) per day to developing professional presentation. So in 1 month you will spent 5 hours (7.5) focusing on your future. This will be time wisely spent than practicing on solving the conundrum that is a Rubik Cube…
I wish I had done this when I was your age, and at this stage of your career. Instead I left it until I was about to enter mid life career change and exuded blood, sweat and tears – and no that was not the name of the pop group at the time – they were a little bit earlier…honest
Think of all the things you can and will add to your portfolio, lets get some ideas from you:
Job relevant quantifiable and qualifiable experience in resume not cover letter
Truthful and accurate dates
Show what you can do – not what you think you can do
No cookie cutter or generic resume
What Managers look for in hiring New Grads (assuming you can get past the gatekeeper/HR or ATS)
Can apply scientific and engineering principles in the identification and solving of problems
Understand risk and the analysis of what can has gone wrong and how to prepare solutions
Effectively and efficiently communicate, in person, written – formal and informal – to peers and lay persons
Show confidence without arrogance and comfortable in their own skin not what they think others want them to be.
Shows the desire to walk before they can run, and prepared to help others for the betterment of the discipline, industry and business.
If at first you don’t succeed …
Create and use a Professional Email address/service (not hotmail/yahoo) – to be used for all things profession related (Gmail is best for helping your social footprint) – jobs/domains/membership/Social Footprint/collaboration
Create and update a LinkedIn Profile – Get a professional photo and use same across all social media platforms
Establish and create you Own domain/website
Join Google Plus and create a profile
Use Facebook/Twitter/Blog/etc… to support your professional image and personal brand
Share/Comment/Follow/Collaborate/Like/etc.. On news updates/subjects related to your profession, etc…
Maintenance and keep up to Update all sources of your social footprint
List your Top 10 work values
Get a personality assessment completed (MBTI, True Colors, etc…)
Professional Photo - not a ‘selfie’ or from party, wedding, funeral…
Create a punchy and recognisable ‘Headline’
Find and utilize ‘Key Words’ used for your target profession, industry, company
Do not make yourself ‘Private’ and hide behind firewalls, security settings, drawn curtains
Know what you don’t like as much as what you do like.
Communicate (written & verbal) professionally and confidently
Here is the FROG – Eat it
In the words of Brian Tracy – if you Eat That Frog that you always put off – then the rest of the day will only get better….
So what is your Frog – the thing that is stopping you move forward to success…
is it Procrastination – Eat It
Self-Doubt – Eat It
Job/Task you don’t like to do – Eat It
