2. GENERAL INFORMATION
• Sheeps are domesticated About 6000-7000 years ago
• There are 44 breeds of sheep found in india
• Total sheep population in india : 74.26 million
• India is on 3rd position in sheep population in world
• Breeding done in winters
• breeding span = 5-8 years
• Average birth weight: 2-3kg
3. CLASSIFICATION OF SHEEP BREEDS
• BASED ON AGROCLIMATIC REGIONS OF INDIA
1. Northern temperate region

5. NORTHERN TEMPERATE REGION SHEEPS
• This region extends from j&k, HP, & hilly areas of punjab and parts of UP
• j&k state hold about 30% of the sheep population in northern region
• About 25% of the wool produce is suitsble for appearl and superior quality of
carpet wool
6. BHAKARWAL
• HP (Shimla,Kinnaur,spiti) & UK
(Rishikesh,Dehradun)
• *Typical convex face line giving a
typical Roman nose
• Wool is coarse
• Used in cross breeding mainly with
Rambouillet (state dept initiative)
CHANGTHANGI
• Changthang region,Ladakh
• Good fleece cover with
extraordinary long staple
• Wool is of good quality
RAMPUR BUSHAIR
• Kinnaur, Shimla,lahaul,Dehradun
and parts of up
• Roman type nose
• Legs belly and face devoid of
wool
• Fleece is medium
quality(apparel/superior carpet
wool)
7. GADDI
• Native to kistwar and bhadarwah
tehsil of j&k and widely distributed
to HP
• Usually whitish tan, brown and black
mixtures are also seen
• avg wool yield= 437-696gm
• Wool is of fine quality and dense(1-
1.5kg/year)
• **Kulllu shawls are made from it
GUREZ
• Baramula dist of j&k
• Biggest Kashmiri breed
• Mutton is of superior quality
• Ewes are good milkers
• Fleece is coarse and hairy
• *being crossed with merino for
improvement

• Avg wool yield: 3kg
• Avg staple length:15-16cm
• Wool is of superior quality

8. NORTHERN WESTERN ARID AND SEMI ARID
REGION
• This region comprises of Punjab, Haryana,rajasthan,Gujrat and some parts of UP &
MP
• About 64% of the total wool is not of fine qualiy and thus use for the carpet
manufacturing
• The region is very favourable for sheep farming
• The region has about 13.1 million sheep population
9. CHOKLA
• Churu,Bikaner,Jaipur and nagaur
of Rajasthan
• Head is small with brown colour
• Face- free of wool, broad forehead
with prominent roman nose
• Wool colour is reddish brown or
dark brown
• Avg wool yield : 1100gm
NALI
• Jhunjnu, churu, ganganagar,
hisar
• Medium sized animal
• Face colour – light brown extends
upto neck
• Forehead is covered with wool
• Fleece- white, coarse,dense and
long stapled
MARWARI
• Marwar region of the eastern
rajasthan
• Face is typically black
• Ears extremely small and tubular
• Fleece is white and not very dense
• Avg wool yield: 1.6kg
10. JAISALMERI
• Jaisalmer, barmer and jodhpur of rajasthan
• Largest breed among eight breed of
rajasthan
• Produces good carpet wool with avg weight
753gm
• Tall, well built animals with black or brown
faces with colour extending upto neck
• Roman nose with long drooping ears
SONADI
• Locally known as laapdi and bhagli
• Sonadi means one with golden fibres
• Marwar region of RAJASTHAN
• Long flat and drooping ears. Tail is very
long and thin
• Very good dressing percentage
• White fleece and extremely coarse
• Used at CSBF for cross breeding
• Ajmer, bhilwara,
bundi,chittorgarh
• Light brown colour face with
tubular ears
• White coarse and hairy fleece
with Avg wt- 1.08kg
• Avg milk yield- 300-500gm
MALPURA
11. PATANWADI
• Called DESI, kutcha etc.
• Found in saurastra and kutch region
of Gujarat
• Body is larger with roman nose and
long flat tubular ears
• Tail is long and thin
• Reddish and brownish in colour
• Average fleece weight is 1.17gm
• Avg fiber diameter : 32 micron
HISARDALE
• Govt livestock farm,hisar through
cross breeding with Australian
merino rams with magra
• Small sized breed and low set
appearance
• Ears are leaf like and medium sized
• Colour is predominantly white, some
brown and black patches may be
observed
• Avg fleece weight: 2.27-2.72kg
MAGRA
• Also known as Bikaneri
• Found in Bikaner, nagaur, Jaisalmer
and churu dist of rajasthan
• Medium to large sized animal
• The ears are extremely small and
tubular
• Tail is short to medium and thin
• Avg wool yield : 1.6kg
• Avg staple length: 5cm
• Have good dressing percentage
12. MUZAFFARNAGARI
• Muzzafarnagar, Saharanpur, meerut Bijnor of UP, Dehradun of UK
• Face and body white with occasional patches of brown or black
• One of the heaviest and largest sheep breed of india
• Tail is EXTREMELY LONG AND REACHES FETLOCK
• Ears are long and dropping
• This breed is well Integrated in agricultural system of India giving
characterstics of FASTER LAMB GROWTH and FEED CONVERSION
EFFICIENCY
• Primarly maintained for meat (mutton breed)
• Belly and legs are devoid of wool
• Average wool production- 600-1000gm,
• Animals are shorn twicr a year –october-november, may-june
• Age at puberty-10-12 months with average weight 25-30kg
• Age at first lambing- 16-18 months
• Daily milk yield- 300-500ml with lactation length ranging from 120-180day
13. SOUTHERN REGION SHEEP BREEDS
• Region comprises of maharastr, AP, tamilnadu and kerala
• About 28% of wool produce and the quality of wool is very coarse,
hairy and coloured fleece
14. DECANNI
• MAHARASTRA , AP,
• AVG wool yield 700gm
• Colour is black and white
NELLORE
• Nellore district and neighbouring
areas of AP
• Famous for only mutton, shearing
is not done generally
BELLARI
• Bellari district of karnatka
• Famous for mutton
• Brownish colour
15. Madras red
• Chingalpet and madras district of
tamilnadu
• Sheaing is not done and also
famous for mutton
COIMBTORE
• COIMBTORE and Madurai
district of tamilnadu
• Medium sized animal
• Avg wool production :500-
1000gm/yr
NILGIRI
• Nilgiri hills of tamilnadu
• Face line is convex, roman nose
• Ears are broad, flat & drooping
• This is a short breed
16. THE EASTERN REGION
• This region comprises of orrisa, west bengal, Assam ,
meghalaya ,arunachal pradesh, sikkim ,mizoram,
nagaland
• Mostly hot and humid except at some place at
eastern side
17. CHOTTANAGPURI
• Jharkhand, west bengal
• Eyes are Small And parllel to head
• Fleece is coarse,hairy and open and
sheared thrice a year
• Avg wool yield -180gm
• Avg fiber diameter- 54micron
Shahabadi
• Shahbad, patna and gaya district of bihar
• Medium sized legged animal
• Tail is extremely long and thin
• Fleece colour is mostly grey
• Annual fleece weight-is 260gm with Avg fiber
diameter 50 micron
• Medullation percentage -84%
BALANGIR
• Balangir,Sambalpur and Sundargarh in
orrisa
• Medium sized animal
• Ears are small and stumpy
• Fleece is extremely coarse and hairy
18. GANJAM
• Koraput, ganjam district Of
orrisa
• Medium sized, with coat colour
brown to Dark tan
• Fleece is short and not shered
• Reared for mutton,
• good lambing percentage
TIBETIAN
• Arunachal Pradesh,sikkim
• Medium sized animals
• White with black or brown face
• Nose line is convex, typical
Roman nose
• Excellent lustrous carpet quality
wool
• Fleece weight- 400-900gm,
sheared twice a year
GAROLE/MEDA
• WEST BENGAL
• Ability to graze in knee-deep
