This study investigated early markers of sarcopenia and frailty in elderly men using MRI. 50 men aged 60-80 were recruited and grouped as pre-frail or frail based on a frailty scale. MRI identified loss of lower limb muscle volume, particularly in posterior muscles, and increased intramuscular fat infiltration in pre-frail men. Frail men showed more severe muscle wasting and fat replacement. The study found MRI can detect early signs of sarcopenia like muscle loss and fat infiltration that precede functional decline, identifying targets for exercise interventions to improve aging.
