Arbaz Malik summarizes his experience as an intern at Shaw Industries working in the Production Planning department. He worked on tasks cleaning up bad data to help integrate yarn and carpet planning, which could save the company $47 million annually by reducing inventory and increasing flexibility. Through building Tableau apps and Google sheets, he helped data stewards identify and correct errors. This will allow the overall supply chain management software to run more efficiently. Arbaz gained valuable technical skills in SQL, databases, and data visualization tools, as well as soft skills like communication and leadership through networking with different teams across the company. He is proud of the impact of his work and learning experience at Shaw Industries.

4. My tasks ( 1st term)
• Task 1: Greige good rule 7
• Task 2: Greige good rule 6
• Task 3: Yarn to Carpet rule 2-1 & 2-2
• Task 4: List & verify inputs and outputs for a yarn product
• Task 5: List & verify coproducts created during the yarn manufacturing
process for a yarn product
5. Task 1 & 2
Given initial SQL queryQuery
Join columns from different databasesJoin
query into Tableau appInsert
App to data stewardsPresent
query based on feedbackAdjust
Tableau app into productionUpload
6. Task 3
Task 3 was like Task 1 & 2
• Continuously receive
feedback from data
stewards on what data
they need and make
necessary changes.
• Apps allowed me to
facilitate meetings with
yarn & carpet directors,
as well as passionate /
awesome data stewards.
• Each week I would look
forward to Shaw’s data
becoming cleaner –
greige good by greige
good.
7. Task 4
• Verified input / output weight for
yarn products
• Built Tableau app to filter for
different yarn and carpet teams, as
well as for residential and
commercial
• Created Google sheets for each
team; Helped us know which
weights were verified and which
weights were incorrect
8. How my tasks affected the business
• Helped clean up bad data that would be used in final OMP software
• Tableau apps published and made available to data stewards so they could easily visualize
their next steps in order to clean bad data.
• Final software would affect sales as well as manufacturing
• If data was bad, it could lead to more waste(wrong orders), more inventory, and
lose our competitive advantage against our competition(lower prices for carpet).
Shaw would have less $$ to innovate.
• Current bad data makes the software take entire weekend
• If bad data removed, the system could create a plan quicker, reducing wasted time.
