GREATER IS HE THAT IS WITHIN ME THAN HE
THAT IS IN THE WORLD
Part I: Demographic Factors Defining your
Identity
 Education – I chose this demographic due to the
fact that education was always emphasized in my
growing up. It was something that we had to
complete no matter how old we were or how long it
took. Completing High School was not an option, we
had to finish, obtaining a college degree was not
optional we had to complete it. However, going
beyond a Bachelor’s Degree was optional in my up
brining, and it did not matter whose household you
were mainly in, Aunts Grandmothers, the rules were
the same, Education was not an option, you had to
fulfill this in order to live a life of gratitude and
humbleness.
Family Structure – In my family, all of the older adults
aunts uncles and grandmothers/fathers raised the
children. As a child I knew who my mother was but I
had been raised by my aunt and uncle until the age of
12, which then I went to live with my mother. My sister
and brother was raised by my mother’s mother and
her sister until they were age 7 and 5. Family always
looked after one another and feed, clothed and
supported each other. I have to say that as a family we
are very close and loving. This influence has lead me
to care and love people for who they are and what
they mean in this thing called life.
Part I: Demographic Factors Defining your
Identity
Religious Affiliations - Church and believing in God was
another one of those options we did not have until we
were in our own homes and paying our own rent.
Although even then we did not have much of a choice to
attend our Pentecostal home church, we however did
chose when we attended. My family has always been in
the church and my great grandfather was a minister of a
southern Pentecostal church and his wife was a teacher, so
I’m guessing that this is where it all stemmed from. This
influence plays a huge part in who I am, who my children
are and what we stand for as a family. We all believe in
God and are true believers of the word in which God
brings to our daily lives.
Part I: Demographic Factors Defining your
Identity
 Types of Schools attended – All of my educational life I have attended Public School and I had no problems
ever with the system. I went to an African American based College and received my Associates but started online
schooling to continue on to my Bachelors and now to my Master’s Degree. I however, chose to educated my
children in the Catholic school setting because, I felt they needed to have a well rounded outlook on life. My
children have also went to Colleges of their choice, University of Miami, Penn State, College of New Rochelle and
one went straight to the Army and the last one is looking at the University of Miami as well but might end up at
The College of New Rochelle. This defines me because I am not letting my children off the hook in finishing
school like I had to. They all have to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree and become a person of stature I our community.
 Ethnic/Racial Background – This is where my life becomes a little confusing. My great grandfather was a
southern African American, his wife my great grandmother was Chenkka Indian. My grandmother was a southern
African American and my Grandfather was Spanish. So which background do I claim to be? Well I just always put
other on applications but when asked by peers or friends I always say mixed Indian/African American. This
influence on my life also plays a huge role due to the fact that as a family we often have a great mixture of food,
times of togetherness and family outings which often ends up in lots of laughter. I often host my families’ dinners
and my sister and brother often do the kids parties.
Part 2 Personal Story
Being that I was raised by my Aunt and Uncle until
I was 12 years old, my childhood was exceptionally
different from my siblings. My household was of
the working upper class people who lived on the
upper east side of N.Y N.Y. My uncle was an U.S.
Court Offer and my Aunt was a homemaker who
worked as a cook on occasion for the Mayor of
New York during the early 1970’s (John Lindsey). I
was the only child in the household and not to
mention very privileged. I spent the school year
with my aunt and uncle and the summers with my
grandmother and aunt who were raising my
siblings.
Part 2 Personal Story
Describe any unique talents, interests or hobbies that
contribute to the manner in which you see and
experience the world.
I never really took any interest into having something that
I spent my time doing except playing with my same age
cousins or actually reading and coloring. I would say those
were the only two things that interest me at the time and
now I really enjoy reading. To me reading expands the
mind and has it going wild once you enter a really good
read. I just to read Donald Goings growing up but now I
love Patterson, he’s such a fabulous writing.
Part 2 Personal Story
 Does your name have any particular meaning to you and your family?
This is something that I wished that my name meant something but however it has
no meaning. The only thing close that it comes to is that my father named me.
 Are there any celebrations, ceremonies, rituals, or holidays that your family
celebrates that reflect your culture? What are they? How are they
celebrated?
We often gather together for one huge celebration in July due to the fact that many
of us were born during the months of June and July. So we have one huge picnic
every year.
Part 2 Personal Story
 Can you think of one piece
of advice that has been
handed down through
your family that reflects
values held by your
ancestors?
Take care of Family, Believe in
God and Feed and take care of
the needy.
