A new world wildfires -2021111 for postingJim Dodenhoff
Abstract
From 2018 through 2021, Wildfires have emerged as one of the most destructive and deadly forces impacting energy resiliency around the globe. Dramatic new policy measures have been implemented in different jurisdictions with decidedly mixed results. Even less clear is whether these policy measures will truly ensure safe, reliable, and affordable energy------along with a modicum of reliability. This presentation will provide a detailed overview of the costs of wildfires within a resiliency framework, focusing upon California, Australia and other highly impacted geographic areas. Existing policy responses such as the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program in California will be evaluated for efficacy. Evolving policies will also be reviewed----especially those that hold material potential to mitigate risk. Finally, for those areas with high wildfire risk, electricity market responses in the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector will be explored in detail. To what degree has wildfire risk expedited the shift from centralized utility electricity generation to distributed and/or third-party C&I electricity generation? Has this shift focused upon specific technologies (i.e. storage vs renewables vs fossil fuel generators). The presentation will assess
whether these market shifts are mitigating wildfire risks or simply creating greater complexity and variability.

A report released March 20, 2014 from the U.S. Conference of Mayors that shows the impact of abundant, inexpensive natural gas is having and will continue to have to 2020 and beyond on nine key manufacturing sectors. The report shows that 72% of the benefit from cheap shale gas will go to 363 metropolitan areas across the United States. That is, America's major cities are the beneficiaries, in both jobs and economic impact, from abundant nautral gas.

The boom in US energy production over the last decade has been little short of astounding, resulting in lower energy prices that are sparking an onshore manufacturing renaissance.
But will the skilled labor be there to meet the need?

A biased "report" issued from a group of anti-drillers flying under the banner of the Multi-State Shale Research Collaboration. The report supposedly proves the Marcellus and Utica Shale haven't created all that many jobs after all. In other words, this is a big, bold lie to try to convince people the enormous benefits from shale drilling in the northeast--which has single-handedly saved the northeast from the worst of the Obama depression--didn't really happen! Pay no attention to all those new jobs--shale didn't really create them! Right.

I N THE FUTURE OF ENERGY..

The crystal ball is murky when it comes to
predictions about energy consumption, markets
and future trends.
Consider hydraulic fracturing, for example.
Ten years ago, the U.S. Geological Survey
estimated resource potential in the Marcellus
Shale region was off by 70 times, according to
current federal surveys.
"I think it's essentially impossible to antici-
pate what energy markets are going to look like
in 20 or 30 years, because the rate of change in
technology and potential for climate change are
so great and so disruptive that the world is go-
ing to be fundamentally different than it is now,"
said John Petersen, the founder of the Arlington
Institute, a nonprofit research organization that
focuses on future global trends.
Howard Gruenspecht, administrator of
the U.S. Energy Information Administration,
echoed similar thoughts about the future.
"Predicting a particular game-changing
technology is difficult, if not impossible, to do,"
he said.
Despite this limitation, Gruenspecht said
his analysts spend a significant amount of time
thinking about how technological change might
occur in North American energy markets, where
crude oil prices have exceeded natural gas
prices by a 4-to-l ratio on an energy-equivalent
basis—converting the current price of crude oil
to its natural gas equivalent rate.
"Tlie implication is that there currently exists
a four-fold price advantage for substituting
natural gas for oil-based products," he said. This
price disparity could potentially last for some
time, triggering the deployment of natural gas
vehicle infrastructure because of favorable
market signals to investors.
Futurists like Petersen believe the electric
grid and energy markets are especially suscep-
tible to wild card events like drastic changes
in consumption, geopolitics, solar flares and
changing societal values.
"There is a new generation of young people
who see their relationship to the environment,
to the Earth and their social relationships with
one another in a really different way than all of
us old guys," he said.
Their strong reaction to a wild card event
could galvatiize them to say "never again" in the
same way that Three Mile Island impacted the
nuclear power industry.
"Industries and policymakers need to be
sensitive to this," Peterson said.
Expect the Unexpected
State policymakers can prepare to deal
with this unpredictable future in several ways,
Petersen said.
"Resilience is extraordinarily important,
not only for physical shocks to the system,
but there also needs to be resilience in terms
of technology," he said. Decision-makers also
need a "mechanism for anticipation, as well as
a commitment to use foresight in planning."
That's true, also, for utilities.
"I know this sounds antithetical to many
utilities, but they need more agility, even in
such a capital-intensive industry," Petersen
said.

I spoke at the Harvard Club in February of 2020 on renewable energy, how it can be used to provide a low carbon fuel to electric vehicles, and how both can play a greater role in reducing climate change and increasing jobs and economic growth if government policy helps promote the technologies.

Shale Gas Supply Chains Supporting 450,000 U.S. Jobs
1. Shale Gas Supply Chains Supporting 450,000 U.S. Jobs
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- America's shale energy revolution is creating and sustanting hundreds of
thousands of jobs in diverse sectors of the economy that supply construction, equipment, supplies
and services to shale energy operations; and making the U.S. manufacturing sector more
competitive by reducing energy input costs, Energy Equipment & Infrastructure Alliance (EEIA)
President & CEO Toby Mack told Congress today.Â

y and Mineral Resoures Subcommittee hearing, Mack said the shale supply chain is booming and has
created more than 450,000 jobs since the energy revolution began less than a decade ago. New
research conducted by IHS Global for EEIA indicates that this boom will generate consistently rapid
growth over the next decade. By 2025, nearly 300,000 new jobs will be created, for a 64 percent
increase over 2012 employment in the diverse shale supply chain industries.
This continued growth will impact all sectors of the shale energy supply chain. Jobs will be added in
businesses engaged in manufacturing, construction, logistics and services supporting energy
operations, and will be dispersed across the country. The economic and employment benefits of
shale oil and gas development extend well beyond those states with major shale plays: the
preliminary IHS Global findings indicate that by 2025 better than one out of every seven jobs in the
supply chain industries - more than 126,000 in all - will be in non-energy producing states.
2. Mack concluded his remarks by reminding the subcommittee the shale energy supply chain is a
major contributor to the U.S. economy and its nationwide outlook is strong for the foreseeable
future. However, he cautioned that government action restricting shale energy production would
undermine the vitality of the entire sector. "Policymakers must protect public health, safety and the
environment while pursuing policies that allow the shale energy sector to grow and prosper," Mack
said.
Mack's complete statement is available at http://www.eeia.org/testimony.pdf.
