A global foundation for women where we cater for two kind of women: 1. Bottom of pyramid--- Women that earn less than a dollar a day and are the poorest of the poor. They need money for basic necessities of life. In most cases these women are semi-skilled or unskilled. We are setting up systems to provide these women technical training, allowing them to set up small enterprises. To show case and market their products and to earn. This means the difference between life and death, between having food on their plate or starving and between sending their kids to school or letting them become child labrours. 2. Educated Women---- A growing number of educated skilled women in Pakistan that left job to settle in life. Speaking to thousands of them we find them energetic and ethusatic who have dreams and goals in life. They want to do something with it. To channel their energies in a positive manner to make a difference.

2. Every single minute, hundreds of women in Pakistan are denied the opportunity to health care, education, employment & sometimes life.

3. Vision To provide women “a chance at life”through technical training for income-generating projects so they have access to necessities of life & can live the life of their dreams.

4. Formal Organization Shahina Aftab Foundation (SAF) formally started operations in 2010 as an answer to over 500 distress cries of help from desperate & desolate women & their families. These were cries for help for lighting their stoves, sending children to school, and basic health care. Other desperate calls were from educated women who after getting married could not be part of work force because of family needs but wanted to work. SAF believes the answer lies in income generating activities!

6. Our Work Having worked in various capacities in the public, private and non profit organizations, between them the founders have 50 years of diversified experiencein helping women & children get access to education, health services & income generating activities.

7. Bonded Labor BOP Working Women Women in Pakistan do not earn enough to meet EVEN nutritious needs hence other basic needs are far away from their approach. All the women who earn between Rs.( 0-4000) should be considered as poor because of ballooned price hikes of daily use commodities and consumption. Source: SPDC

8. Working Statistics State Bank estimates… 27 million (17%) live below $1/day 116 million (73%) live below $2/day. This population is assumed to be poor whereas rising inflation in Pakistan leads to further increasing number of people in this category. Share of women in employment is 17% 8% of urban Pakistan 17% employed from rural Pakistan 67.4% women in agricultural 15.8% involved in services. (Source: SPDC)

Child Labor Many private organizations have estimated … 8 to 19 million child laborers in Pakistan Federal Bureau of Statistics identified Age of a child: 5-14 years Number of Children : 40 million in Pakistan In many cases, the parents cannot afford education for their children. Statistics show that most child laborers go on to have children that do not attend school and the cycle of poverty continues.

SOHO Shops GOAL: Providing educated women a chance at life to set up Small Office Home Office (SOHO) where they use their education and skill set to reach their dreams and contribute to the society! 12. Maternal Health Is child birth a death sentence? Pakistan--- we are losing a mother for every 89 child births. Absolute number : 10,400 maternal deaths/year. Balochistan, 785 deaths/100,000 live births (triple the national rate) 85% of these deaths are preventable!

13. Children Health The infant mortality rate for Pakistan is 77/ 1,000 live births Mortality rate for children under age 5 = 97. 2 million children of less than 5 years of age die of pneumonia. Similar number die of diarrhea every year Together these account for 22% of child death in Pakistan Malaria kills nearly 1 million children/ year.

14. State of Health ServicesPakistan 2007 Official Data highlights 85 physicians for every 100,000 persons in One doctor for 1,225 people. Only 62,000 nurses all over Pakistan

16. Dowry & Weddings A “dowry” is property/ house hold items a woman brings to her husband at marriage. UNICEF has reported that women with bridal dowries deemed too small have been abused, beaten & even murdered by in-laws. Dowry deaths or disfigurement by burning or acid are reported in Pakistan
