In this study, the effects exerted by the omega-3 fatty acids on the concentration of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and body mass index in obese children (11 to 12, years old) were evaluated using two experimental designs.
In the first stage, a dietary intake of fish was administered to obese children: In the second stage, a dietary intake of gummies with omega-3 fatty acids was used on obese children.
The results showed that dietary intake of gummies with omega-3 fatty acids induces greater changes in the levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol and body mass index compared with the dietary intake of fish. In conclusion, all these data suggest that dietary intakes of omega-3 fatty acids can decrease the degree of obesity in obese children.

Effects of Peptides and Amino Acids Derived from Oyster on Blood LipidsSai Babitha
Objectives: The objective of this study is to demonstrate the effect on blood lipids in
humans, of a supplement which contained peptides and amino acids originating from
oyster meat.
Methods: Proteins in oyster meat were hydrolyzed by enzymes, followed by preparing
oyster meat extract powder containing the peptides and free amino acids as a
supplement. We performed the following 2 clinical trials in which male and female
adults with dyslipidemia received the oyster meat supplement for specified periods; in
the first open label trial, the oyster meat supplement was given to 14 subjects (average
age 48.7 years old) for 8 weeks, while in the second crossover controlled trial, the
oyster meat supplement and its placebo were taken by 19 subjects (average age 52.4
years old) for 4 weeks, respectively. In these trials, the effect of the supplement on
blood lipids was evaluated by conducting serum chemistry and body composition
measurement before and after taking the supplement.
Results: In the open label trial, at the end of Week 4 from the start of taking the
supplement, a decrease of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and an increase of
high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in blood lipoproteins were observed with statistically
significant difference (P<0.01).
In the crossover placebo-controlled study, we confirmed the reduction of the ratio
of VLDL in lipoproteins (P=0.04), the increase of HDL cholesterol (P=0.02), and the
suppression of the elevation of triglycerides (TG) (P=0.02) Week 4after the start of
taking of the supplement.
Conclusion: The oyster meat extract powder was most likely to have potential utilities
in the management of dyslipidemia.
This meta-analysis of 19 randomized controlled trials involving over 135,000 participants found:
1) High-dosage vitamin E supplementation (≥400 IU/day for at least 1 year) was associated with increased all-cause mortality.
2) Lower-dosage vitamin E supplementation was not clearly associated with increased or decreased mortality.

Effects of Peptides and Amino Acids Derived from Oyster on Blood LipidsSai Babitha
Objectives: The objective of this study is to demonstrate the effect on blood lipids in
humans, of a supplement which contained peptides and amino acids originating from
oyster meat.
Methods: Proteins in oyster meat were hydrolyzed by enzymes, followed by preparing
oyster meat extract powder containing the peptides and free amino acids as a
supplement. We performed the following 2 clinical trials in which male and female
adults with dyslipidemia received the oyster meat supplement for specified periods; in
the first open label trial, the oyster meat supplement was given to 14 subjects (average
age 48.7 years old) for 8 weeks, while in the second crossover controlled trial, the
oyster meat supplement and its placebo were taken by 19 subjects (average age 52.4
years old) for 4 weeks, respectively. In these trials, the effect of the supplement on
blood lipids was evaluated by conducting serum chemistry and body composition
measurement before and after taking the supplement.
Results: In the open label trial, at the end of Week 4 from the start of taking the
supplement, a decrease of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and an increase of
high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in blood lipoproteins were observed with statistically
significant difference (P<0.01).
In the crossover placebo-controlled study, we confirmed the reduction of the ratio
of VLDL in lipoproteins (P=0.04), the increase of HDL cholesterol (P=0.02), and the
suppression of the elevation of triglycerides (TG) (P=0.02) Week 4after the start of
taking of the supplement.
Conclusion: The oyster meat extract powder was most likely to have potential utilities
in the management of dyslipidemia.
This meta-analysis of 19 randomized controlled trials involving over 135,000 participants found:
1) High-dosage vitamin E supplementation (≥400 IU/day for at least 1 year) was associated with increased all-cause mortality.
2) Lower-dosage vitamin E supplementation was not clearly associated with increased or decreased mortality.
3) Risk of death appeared to increase with vitamin E dosages over 150 IU/day, with statistically significant increases in risk seen at dosages over 900 IU/day.
4) The findings suggest avoiding high-dosage vitamin E supplementation but do not determine if lower dosages are safe.
This study examined the association between exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS) and thyroid hormone levels in 6-year-old children. The study analyzed data from 564 children in South Korea. The results found no significant association between BPA exposure and thyroid hormones. However, increased BPF exposure was associated with increased free thyroxine (T4) levels in boys and decreased levels in girls. This suggests BPF may disrupt thyroid function differently based on sex. The study contributes to limited research on health effects of BPA alternatives like BPF and BPS in young children.

This study developed a method to quantify β-agonists in infant formula using QuEChERS extraction and LC-MS/MS detection. β-agonists are added to animal feed but can be harmful to humans. The QuEChERS method was optimized to extract β-agonists from the complex matrix of infant formula. Recoveries from fortified samples ranged from 60-130% with RSD below 8%, demonstrating the method's accuracy and precision. The developed method provides an efficient tool for quantifying β-agonists at 1 μg/kg levels in infant formula.
1) The study examined the effects of a 6-week aerobic exercise program on serum resistin levels in 24 sedentary obese women divided into an exercise or control group.
2) While the exercise group showed improvements in body weight and abdominal obesity after the program, their serum resistin levels did not change significantly compared to pre-training levels.
3) The findings suggest that more substantial weight loss, of at least 5% of body weight, may be needed to see improvements in adipocytokine levels like resistin in obese individuals.

This journal club presentation summarizes a study comparing three methods for measuring serum creatinine levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis: the Jaffe method, enzymatic method, and isotope dilution-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (IDLCMS). The study found that the Jaffe and enzymatic methods significantly underestimated serum creatinine levels in uremic patients compared to the IDLCMS method. Higher serum glucose and globulin levels were associated with positive biases, while higher albumin, potassium, and phosphorus were associated with negative biases in the Jaffe and enzymatic methods. The enzymatic method was less affected by serum glucose and protein levels than the Jaffe method.
This document describes a study that integrated multiple genotoxicity endpoints, including the Pig-a assay, into a standard 28-day rodent toxicity study with urethane. Male rats were treated with urethane at doses of 25, 100, and 250 mg/kg/day or a vehicle control for 29 days. Additional endpoints measured were micronucleated reticulocytes and polychromatic erythrocytes, chromosome aberrations, and DNA damage via comet assay in blood and various tissues. INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
Quercetin was fi rst introduced to our A–Z series
in the article on fl avonoids.1 In Part 33, the author
of the fl avonoid review, Dr Nieman, updates this
topic. We also cover another intriguing plant-
based compound with proposed benefi ts as an
antioxidant and stimulator of mitochondrial bio-
genesis, resveratrol. Rhodiola rosea, a claimed adap-
togen, concludes this issue.
QUERCETIN

Epidemiological studies support multiple disease
prevention benefi ts for individuals consuming foods
rich in the fl avonol quercetin. In vitro and animal
studies indicate that quercetin is a strong antioxi-
dant and anti-infl ammatory agent, and exerts anti-
pathogenic and immune regulatory infl uences.2
Quercetin supplementation studies in community-
dwelling humans do not refl ect these positive bene-
fi ts, but research is continuing in order to determine
the proper outcome measures, dosing regimen and
adjuvants that may amplify any perceived bioactive
effects of quercetin in vivo.
Quercetin supplementation studies in athletes
have focused on potential infl uences on post-exer-
cise infl ammation, oxidative stress and immune
dysfunction, illness rates following periods of
physiological stress and exercise performance.
Results thus far have been negative for quer-
cetin’s countermeasure effects on postexercise
physiological stress indicators, such as immune
perturbations.3–5 However, when quercetin sup-
plementation is combined with other polyphenols
and food components such as green tea extract,
isoquercetin and fi sh oil, a substantial reduction
in exercise-induced infl ammation and oxidative
stress occurs in athletes, with augmentation of
innate immune function.6
Quercetin exerts strong antiviral activities when
cultured with a wide variety of pathogens. In mice,
quercetin supplementation for 7 days before inoc-
ulation with infl uenza virus and a 3-day period
of heavy exertion partially reduced the exercise-
induced increase in morbidity and mortality.7
A 12-week community trial showed a modest
reduction in upper respiratory tract infections
(URTI) among physically active subjects between
the ages of 40 and 85 years consuming 1000 mg
quercetin per day, but not among younger adults.8
Cyclists randomised to 1000 mg/day quercetin or
placebo for fi ve weeks experienced reduced URTI
incidence during the two-week period following
three days of exhaustive exercise.3

This document summarizes a review of evidence on using probiotics in infants to prevent allergic disease and food hypersensitivity. The review found insufficient evidence that probiotics reduce the risk of allergic disease or food hypersensitivity in infants. While probiotic use was associated with a reduction in infant eczema in some studies, the effect was inconsistent between studies and all studies had substantial losses to follow up, indicating caution is needed in interpreting the results due to methodological limitations. In conclusion, the review found the evidence is currently insufficient to recommend adding probiotics to infant feeds to prevent allergic conditions.

The Efficacy of Equine Oral Joint Supplements
1. Abstract
Few studies have examined the efficacy of glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, and
chondroitin sulfate supplements in horses. The purpose of this study is to
determine if the commercially available supplements are meeting the label
guarantees, and to analyze any correlation between price point and efficacy
of use. The supplemental ingredients of interest to this study are
combinations of glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate.
Horses in the study were fed each supplement for a 14-day period with
synovial fluid extracted through aseptic arthrocentesis at days 0 and 14. The
12 horses followed a 14-day feeding period accompanied by a 28-day dry out
period. This protocol was repeated 3 times, each with a different supplement.
During these trials and the dry-out periods, the horses were divided into
groups of 4 and exercised at different levels depending on the group.
Physical data was collected on days 0 and 14 of each of the 3 trials to
determine any physical differences associated with the use of the
supplements. The veterinarian scored the horses at a walk and trot before
carrying out flexion tests on all 4 limbs. The pulse, temperature, respiratory
rate, and body condition scores were also collected. Enzyme-linked
immunosorbent assays were used to quantify the amounts of chondroitin
sulfate in each sample. The results for the glucosamine and hyaluronic acid
are still pending.

Introduction
Previous studies have evaluated lameness scores and sensitivity while feeding supplements to horses, but none have successfully evaluated the exact quantity of the molecules within the nutraceutical
that reach the intended target. This study is focused on evaluating the exact quantity of chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, and glucosamine from the oral joint supplement reaching the joints in the
horse.
The evaluation of synovial fluid, blood serum, soundness evaluations, and flexion tests allows a quantification of the amount of each molecule reaching the joint as well as if the molecules are
entering the cardiovascular system and whether the supplements are influencing any visual changes in the animal.
Within this study, three different products were fed per product recommendations to twelve horses between the ages of seven and twenty-three. These products were evaluated to prove the efficacy of
the supplement in reaching the target joint, the exact amount of each molecule were quantified through the specific assays for each molecule, and compared to the guarantees to determine the
correlation between price and the efficacy of the specific supplement. Three other products were also be used to observe the amount of each molecule within the product compared to the label
guarantee.
Exercise regiments of different levels were tested to determine the connection between amounts of exercise and supplement efficacy. The samples of each supplement, blood serum, and synovial fluid
were evaluated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) to quantify the chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid. Fluorophore assisted carbohydrate electrophoresis (FACE) was used to
quantify the glucosamine molecules in each supplement product.

Discussion
Joint disease is a significant concern among the performance horse industry due to the constant stress on their joints. Primary injuries may seem minor, but secondary injuries may present themselves
later in life as joint disease caused by uneven weight bearing during the original injury.
Lameness evaluations were conducted on days 0 and 14 of each trial to determine any correlation between supplementation and physical changes. Graphs 2, 3, and 4 represent the data collected from
the veterinarian over the 3 trials on the left front leg of each horse. The data showed no relationship between supplementation and physical change.
Graphs 5, 6, and 7 represent each of the 3 fed supplements on day 0 and day 14. The graphs compare day 0 and day 14 to show the change in each horse’s synovial fluid chondroitin sulfate content.
Supplement A presented a consistent increase from day 0 to day 14 in every horse without variation from environment or exercise regimen. Supplements B and C varied in the chondroitin sulfate
data; the supplements showed an increase in some horses but a decrease in others. There are no patterns of consistency between pastures or exercise regimen.
The difference was taken between day 14 and day 0 for each supplement to represent a positive or negative change. Table 2 shows the differences of each horse for supplements A, B, and C. The
results are represented in Graph 1 to show the drastic difference between the 3 supplements. According to the graph, supplement C showed the most negative differences, there were a few negative
differences in supplement B, and only positive differences were found using supplement A.
Along with the 3 supplements fed to the horses, another 3 supplements were added to the research in order to determine the quantity of molecules in each product. Since nutraceuticals are not
regulated in North America, there is a difference in price and label guarantees from company to company. These 6 supplements were analyzed for hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate content
using ELISA kits and glucosamine using fluorophore-assisted carbohydrate electrophoresis. The results are shown in Table 3 representing the stated label guarantee and the analyzed quantity in the
product. The hyaluronic acid assay only accurately quantified supplements A, C, and F, which all showed higher analyzed quantities than the label guarantees. The chondroitin sulfate assay showed
half of the analyzed products had a lower chondroitin sulfate than stated on the label guarantee. The glucosamine assay found the label guarantees were much higher than the amount found during
