Introduction to the San Francisco Public Press, presented at Geeks for Good in San Francisco, March 19, 2014. Presenter: Michael Stoll, executive director
Political blogs in Australia provide diverse perspectives that add to political discussions. However, access to high-speed internet is limited in regional areas, affecting participation in online political debates. While new internet media give voice to marginalized groups, the mainstream media remains influential as a source for bloggers and citizen journalists. There is debate around the role of blogs in influencing politics compared to traditional media.

Owen Jones argues that negative stereotyping of the working class has increased as inequality has grown. Politicians and media frequently portray the working class as feckless, unintelligent, having too many children, and not wanting to work. This excuses poverty and suggests it is their own fault rather than circumstances. Jones criticizes the media's demonization of the working class through portrayals like Vicky Pollard and blaming Jade Goody. He argues this makes policies that increase inequality and attack the welfare state more acceptable.
This document discusses the three types of web content, editorial, commercial, and user-generated, and how purchase decisions are influenced in the information age. It also mentions the transformation of society every few hundred years according to P. Drucker, where within a few decades society rearranges itself, including its worldview, values, structures, arts, and key institutions. The document lists various trusted sources that can influence purchasing, including PR agencies, community managers, ads, bloggers, government, and friends and family.
Companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook started and are headquartered in San Francisco, where many tech companies are founded and based. San Francisco has been a hub for technological innovation and is the home to giants in the industry. The city attracts entrepreneurs and founders through its culture of creativity and access to funding that has helped many startups grow into the major corporations familiar today.
Building San Francisco - Mayor's SF Business Times Structures September 2013 ...Laurelb
San Francisco is experiencing significant growth and development across several neighborhoods. 25 tower cranes are currently in operation building new residential and office construction. Since Mayor Lee took office, 30,100 new jobs have been added and the unemployment rate has dropped from 6.1% to 5.9%. Several neighborhoods like Central Market and Rincon have thousands of new housing units and millions of square feet of newly leased or purchased office space, accommodating thousands more jobs. Major development projects are ongoing or planned across Downtown, Central Corridor, and the Waterfront.
The document discusses the abandoned vehicle complaint process in San Francisco and how the Department of Telecommunication and Information Systems (DTIS) improved it. The old system was inefficient, causing frustration as citizens struggled to leave voicemail messages. DTIS created a new CRM system allowing greater collaboration, online complaint tracking and better customer service. It analyzed problems and changed the process to integrate 311 services, allowing direct communication with operators and faster resolution of issues.

A Travelogue to U.S.A by ahsan mohammed.k MOHAMMED AHSAN
This document provides a travel guide to three major cities in the USA: New York City, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. For New York City, it lists popular tourist destinations like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Terminal, and Rockefeller Center. It then briefly mentions attractions in San Francisco like Chinatown and the Bay Bridge views from Treasure Island. Finally, it notes that Las Vegas is known for gambling, casinos, bars and resorts.
The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate strait connecting San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. When completed in 1937, it had the longest suspension bridge span in the world. The bridge is painted international orange to blend in with the natural surroundings. San Francisco was founded in 1776 and grew rapidly during the California Gold Rush, but was devastated by an earthquake and fire in 1906 that destroyed much of the city. The city has since rebuilt and become an international tourist destination known for its architecture, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and cable cars.
This document discusses how organizations and information systems influence each other in complex ways. It covers key topics like how organizational structure, culture, politics and other factors shape information systems usage, and vice versa. Porter's competitive forces model is introduced as a way for firms to develop competitive strategies using information systems. Transaction cost theory and agency theory are discussed as lenses for understanding how information systems can help firms contract in size while growing revenues. The document also explores how information systems can impact organizations through flattening structures and potentially encountering resistance to change.
The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate strait between San Francisco and Marin County. It has a main span of 1,280 meters and a total length of 2,737 meters. Construction began in 1933 and was completed in 1937, with 11 workers dying during construction. The suspension bridge cost $35 million to build and its international orange color makes it a iconic landmark in the San Francisco Bay Area.
This presentation is a compilation of selected topics on the history of urbanization, urban and regional planning theories, urban thinkers and their contributes, concepts, bases of land use, applicability to the Philippine setting, and a briefer of urban design elements.
Ebenezer Howard's 1898 work contrasted rural and urban life, proposing "Garden Cities" that incorporated the best of both, such as Letchworth (1903) and Welwyn Garden City (1920). While well-intentioned, garden cities often functioned merely as dormitories for larger cities and did not fully achieve their egalitarian vision. Bid rent theory shows how much different sectors are willing to pay for land in various locations, with retail highest in the city center and residential uses on the outskirts. Variations of this model account for factors like transportation intersections and suburban centers.
The document discusses the history, theory, aspects, and practice of urban planning. It begins with definitions of urban planning and discusses its origins in ancient civilizations. It then covers influential urban planning theories and thinkers from Hippodamus to modernists like Howard and Le Corbusier. The document outlines aspects of urban planning like aesthetics, infrastructure, transportation and discusses sustainable practices. It also discusses new master-planned cities and different levels of urban planning from national to municipal. In the end, it discusses impacts of urban planning on happiness, education and criminality.
Land use planning refers to allocating land resources for different uses consistent with development goals. It involves classifying land, determining suitable land uses, and regulating development through tools like zoning maps and land use plans. The objectives are to promote efficient land use, reconcile conflicts, and guide sustainable development patterns. Land use planning organizations at the national, regional, and local levels coordinate to classify land and guide land allocation and conversion nationally and within their jurisdictions.

CBC & the science academy: A participatory journeyneheli
The publicly funded Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has a unique, participatory relationship with the science academy that is showcased on the CBC documentary website Geologic Journey II. Although academics work on interesting projects that have great relevance to those outside academic circles, their work is generally published in journals or texts that are not often accessed or easily understood by the general public. On Geologic Journey II, contemporary research is highlighted in a manner that makes it easily accessible and showcases scientific findings to a much wider audience.
Through the lens of media logic, using the theories of convergence culture and the public sphere, in this paper I explore how the relationship between CBC and the science academy invigorates public discourse, and why building relationships with community partners makes good business sense for a public broadcaster.

The document aims to promote discussion on how digitalization is affecting media industries and social practices.

This document provides an overview of the introductory course MEST 3. It begins with the course structure which includes theory tests, case study progress updates, terminology tests, and quizzes. It then discusses getting started with annotated research, media glossaries, relevant theories, images, and bibliographies. Several international news stories are then summarized, which will be discussed in the 'What in the world...?' segment of the course. It ends by discussing representing and ideology, emphasizing the importance of understanding context in analyzing representations in media texts.
Marketing proposal for the City of Lynchburg, Virginia's Fifth Street Corridor Project. I was asked to create a communications plan incorporating social and traditional media within a budget of $20,000.
I researched the media outlets (TV, radio, outdoor, etc.) to determine availability and pricing and explored some unusual options such as movie theatre ads and gas pump ads. Although I had first thought magazine advertising would be a good option, the cost was too high and it was better to allocate the funds elsewhere. Radio is always a good option and there were several stations that were appropriate for this message.
I used several social media outlets as well, such as YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter. There are several good options, but none of them really matter unless you make an effort to keep up with them, test messages, and keep getting the word out.
The advantages of working for a BPO include opportunities for career growth without needing specific educational qualifications, competitive salaries and benefits, and exposure to working in a global business environment. However, disadvantages can include long working hours and night shifts, high stress levels due to strict performance targets, and less job security since BPO work is often outsourced. Employee turnover tends to be high due to the demanding nature of the work.
This document discusses strategies for public research universities, like the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University, to better demonstrate their value as public goods that benefit all state residents, not just students. It proposes a "counterinsurgency strategy" of prioritizing outreach, public service projects with local impact, and highlighting how university research and innovations create jobs and economic opportunities for the state. The strategy aims to build broader public and political support for funding public universities as important state investments.

Propaganda with a mission (for ASREC Conference)Bex Lewis
Propaganda with a Mission: Learning from the Second World War for the Christian Sector in a Digital Age
In the Second World War, British propaganda posters were circulated using the techniques of persuasion, education, information, celebration, encouragement, morale boosting, and identification of enemies to encourage civilians to understand and undertake their responsibilities in ‘The People’s War’.
In the face of oft-reported declines in church membership, there is urgency for the church to recognize the possibilities of online spaces. The author of a PhD on the above topic developed the BIGBible Project in 2010. The Project blog curates contributions from #DIGIdisciples, questioning what it means to be a Christian in a digital age and in the digital environment. What do digital technologies allow us to do differently, and what can we learn from the past?
The conference paper will draw from the rich collection of over 2,750 #digidisciple posts to demonstrate the potential that the digital has offered the Christian sector, whilst also emphasizing continuity with the past.
