Georges Goursat
• Georges Goursat (1863–1934), known as Sem,
was a French caricaturist.
• His work shows an insight into Parisian high
society at the turn of the century.
• Sem’s unique talent made his work very
identifiable because his characters usually
emerge from a white or plain background
rather than being more obvious caricatures.
• Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in
turn produced images that were true to life.
I decided to do background research on Georges Goursat
because I thought that by having more knowledge about
his work / who he was, I would be able to gain a better
understanding of this style of design, whilst also finding
some ideas for my set and how to incorporate him / his
designs in an interesting, unique way.
As the choreographer wanted, I took the picture she
asked me to recreate and built upon it in order to create a
realistic french café effect, with the use of Georges
Goursat’s caricatures.
