Introduction: Explain your project (place, time, and subject matter)
My transformation project includes 20 photographs of the Brown Sisters. They
photographs were taken each spring at Long Beach, California. The black and white
prints are arranged chronologically and the sisters are positioned similarly within each
photograph. Recognizable elements include the sisters in the foreground, a meadow with
flowers in the middle ground, and a fringe of trees in the background. The photographs
were taken with a Nikon single reflex camera and required the traditional film processing.
Thesis Statement:
I think that the photo series reveals the diversity, frailties and strengths of a
family over time.
I see that within the first five photos, the sisters possessed a look of confidence.
Mary and Dora hold their heads high and stand looking straight into the camera, while
Pamela and Christine look off into the distance. All four sisters appear content and aware
of each other’s presence.
Time
Time affects us all and I think that the photographs demonstrate the physical and
emotional effects of time. For example, photographs ten through fifteen reveal two
pregnancies. This makes me contemplate birth and growth from childhood to adult. The
range of hairstyles that shift and change within the photographs also signify the passing
of time. Three of the sisters appear to embrace hairstyle changes more readily. The styles
include short, blunt cuts as well as long, natural locks.
Time is also apparent through the changing light within each image. Seven of the
images suggest that the sun is setting. For me, sunsets are a time for contemplation and
reflections. These images bring to mind my own affinity with sunsets. For me, sunsets
are a time for contemplation and reflection—especially when the angle of the light
reflects off of the ocean’s surface and light dances into darkness between the hours of 6
and 8 p.m.
Strength
To me families are one of the strongest entities on this planet. The photo series
embody the strength of families. For example, the sisters always stand closely,
sometimes even embracing each other. All of the photographs include overlapping
figurative shapes of sisters. Strength always most always includes a bond among many
elements in order to endure the forces of nature and internal stress. For example,

Ivón delivered her fourth lesson to two groups of 5-year-olds. She used the Natural Approach and PPP method, demonstrating new vocabulary like colors. Students enjoyed singing and coloring activities. For one group, Ivón added straws to student pictures for a song activity. Time was a challenge, limiting planning and feedback. The local teacher also rushed between lessons, making communication difficult.

Paula improved at using technology but recording stopped during videos/music. Feedback will help her plan future lessons to better manage time and encourage more English during activities.

7 Natural Wonders Virtual Tour
Students took a virtual tour of the 7 natural wonders of the world to identify plants and animals in each area and why they are found there. The teacher used Google Earth to show students each location, where they would predict and then learn about the local flora and fauna and environmental factors supporting them. While the lesson engaged students and they enjoyed learning in this way, managing a large class proved difficult at times with students becoming too rowdy.

1. The student observed a kindergarten classroom where the teacher, Ms. Long, taught lessons on blends, listening skills, and social studies.
2. The teacher prepared well for the lessons with printed materials and displays around the classroom. She also clearly explained expectations to students.
3. The teacher kept students engaged by making lessons fun and interactive through stories, songs, movement, and hands-on activities like drawing.
4. Students were involved through group work, answering questions, reading aloud, and sharing their work with the class. The teacher evaluated understanding throughout the lessons by checking students' work and having them explain answers.

Paula taught an English lesson to a 6th grade class about pirates. She focused on communicative language teaching and the Natural Approach. Activities included reading a story, vocabulary games, and dressing up. Students were engaged and used English. Time management went well except one lesson ran long due to a school assembly. Paula improved at using technology but recording stopped during videos/music. Feedback will help her plan future lessons to better manage time and encourage more English during activities.

to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover

- 1. Jennifer Heisler UF/Digital Photography Photos Set 7
- 2. PHOTO #1 This photo was chosen not only because I love the children’s expressions, but because I was able to edit the photo and make it black and white. When I purchased my camera, I did not realize that it did not include this option. I now know how to edit the photo using Picasa. This photo was also cropped and text was added. It was taken during a field trip to the Central Florida Zoo. The photo can be used during a lesson on editing photos. A fun project for the children would be to make a class memory book. Another lesson could be to have the students in the photo reflect on their trip to the zoo or to write a thank you letter to the people at the zoo. They could answer questions such as, what were you thinking when the photo was taken? What was the lesson about?
- 3. PHOTO #2 The burst option was used to get this series of photos. This was the first time I tried using the option and it just so happened that my nephew’s airplane landed on the roof. My dad had to go get it and so it was the perfect opportunity to snap some shots of an unusual occurrence. These photos could be used as an example to teach sequence. Students can practice re-telling what happens in a story or they can create a comic strip, sequencing chart, or story map. Since we instruct students to recognize key words in a sequencing test problem, they could practice using those key words in writing (first, last, next, finally, etc.).
- 4. PHOTO #3 This is my favorite photo of all and I was very fortunate to have taken a trip to the Everglades this semester. The weather was cold and dry, making it a great day for pictures. I believe these birds are cormorants. I love the way they are intertwined and all looking in the same direction. The photo can be used when giving a lesson on family, perhaps in the beginning of the school year when we are getting to know each other. There are many geography lessons that can be taught such as, locating the Everglades on a map and teaching students that the Everglades is a river. Of course the photo can be a tool when teaching about animals and habitat. Students can use the internet to research this type of bird and create a report and/or poster.
- 5. PHOTO #4 Another great photo taking excursion was to St. Pete Beach, where I came across this jellyfish. Prior to this class I would have never taken a photo of a jellyfish, but it occurred to me to try. The weather was bright and sunny as you can tell by the sparkling water. A foamy wave washed in just as I snapped the photo. It wasn’t until I downloaded the photo that I realized it was good. Similar to photo #3, this could be used in science when studying animals and habitats. It could also be a starter for a writing assignment in which students write about a time when they were hurt or scared by an animal.
- 6. PHOTO #5 This is just a “fun” photo in which my students were acting excited. The timing seems perfect. This was part of a lesson I created on making an emotions book. The students really were excited to take part in the lesson as you can tell! This also can be used an example when teaching students about drama. Before assigning parts in a play, they can look at photos where students are acting sad, angry, determined, etc. This gives them an opportunity to get ideas on how to act.
