N1QL+GSI: Language and Performance Improvements in Couchbase 5.0 and 5.5Keshav Murthy
N1QL gives developers and enterprises an expressive, powerful, and complete language for querying, transforming, and manipulating JSON data. We’ll begin this session with a brief overview of N1QL and then explore some key enhancements we’ve made in the latest versions of Couchbase Server. Couchbase Server 5.0 has language and performance improvements for pagination, index exploitation, integration, index availability, and more. Couchbase Server 5.5 will offer even more language and performance features for N1QL and global secondary indexes (GSI), including ANSI joins, aggregate performance, index partitioning, auditing, and more. We’ll give you an overview of the new features as well as practical use case examples.

What Scalable Programs Need from Transactional MemoryDonald Nguyen
Transactional memory (TM) has been the focus of numerous studies, and it is supported in processors such as the IBM Blue Gene/Q and Intel Haswell. Many studies have used the STAMP benchmark suite to evaluate their designs. However, the speedups obtained for the STAMP benchmarks on all TM systems we know of are quite limited; for example, with 64 threads on the IBM Blue Gene/Q, we observe a median speedup of 1.4X using the Blue Gene/Q hardware transac- tional memory (HTM), and a median speedup of 4.1X using a software transactional memory (STM).
What limits the performance of these benchmarks on TMs? In this paper, we argue that the problem lies with the programming model and data structures used to write them. To make this point, we articulate two principles that we believe must be embodied in any scalable program and argue that STAMP programs violate both of them. By modifying the STAMP programs to satisfy both principles, we produce a new set of programs that we call the Stampede suite. Its median speedup on the Blue Gene/Q is 8.0X when using an STM. The two principles also permit us to simplify the TM design. Using this new STM with the Stampede benchmarks, we obtain a median speedup of 17.7X with 64 threads on the Blue Gene/Q and 13.2X with 32 threads on an Intel Westmere system.
These results suggest that HTM and STM designs will benefit if more attention is paid to the division of labor between application programs, systems software, and hardware.

Tales of modernizing trello's web stackVincent Kok
The web community is a fast moving community and over the recent years, many great frameworks and tools have emerged. Technology changes made in the past are not always the right ones today. This applies to Trello’s web stack too. CoffeeScript and Backbone were great choices 7 years ago but there are better tools and frameworks available now, so the Trello team decided to update its stack. But, how does one tackle this and how do you make sure you continue to innovate product-wise while modernizing its web stack? This is what we will discuss in this session -- main drivers for modernizing, the reasoning for choosing for TypeScript, React and GraphQL and will discuss our strategy implementing it, including two failed attempts. When leaving this session you will have learned which tactics to apply when modernizing a web stack and warning signs to be aware off.
Smuggling Multi-Cloud Support into Cloud-native Applications using Elastic Co...Nane Kratzke
Elastic container platforms (like Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, Apache Mesos) fit very well with existing cloud-native application architecture approaches. So it is more than astonishing, that these already existing and open source available elastic platforms are not considered more consequently for multi-cloud approaches. Elastic container platforms provide inherent multi-cloud support that can be easily accessed. We present a solution proposal of a control process which is able to scale (and migrate as a side effect) elastic container platforms across different public and private cloud-service providers. This control loop can be used in an execution phase of self-adaptive auto-scaling MAPE loops (monitoring, analysis, planning, execution). Additionally, we present several lessons learned from our prototype implementation which might be of general interest for researchers and practitioners. For instance, to describe only the intended state of an elastic platform and let a single control process take care to reach this intended state is far less complex than to define plenty of specific and necessary multi-cloud aware workflows to deploy, migrate, terminate, scale up and scale down elastic platforms or applications.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
