Applying to
universities in
Pakistan
Medicine
Ayesha
Medicine
● There are about 114 medical colleges in Pakistan with roughly 16500 seats every
year. Can you guess how many people apply to these medical colleges all over
Pakistan?
● Keeping the competition in mind it’s important that we make informed decisions on
where we want to apply, keeping in mind the following factors-
○ Public or private?
○ Academics - who are the faculty?
○ Fees structure?
○ International Accreditation / National ranking?
○ Hospital associated with the college?
○ Facilities in university- extracurriculars etc?
○ Prestige of the university?
Medicine
Overseas vs Pakistani Students-
● According to PMC regulations Pakistani nationals residing outside
Pakistan are to be eligible to apply to universities on open merit
basis.
● In Sindh government universities the criteria for overseas students
is if the candidates have completed the last two years of education
outside Pakistan.
● Overseas Pakistanis are required to give the MDCAT, prove their
overseas status by submitting their parent’s employment contract,
apply online through portals and courier their documents.
● Fees structures- comparison of public vs private, while Dow
Medical College has annual fees of around 80,000 - 90,000 Rs. for
local and 17,000$ for overseas Pakistanis and Foreign Nationals.
● These regulations change every year so follow them on twitter and
keep up with their notices!!
Medicine
Steps to apply to a medical college in Pakistan-
1. Register and give the MDCAT
2. Get documents ready-
equalisation of documents,
domiciles, father’s
employment certificates etc.
3. Submit documents and
grades
4. Give the university test/
interview
5. Wait for the merit list!
Medicine
Requirements-
● Academic-
Most private universities require at least 70% in FSC or minimum Bs in A levels.
Each private university forms their own aggregate depending on interview marks, MDCAT score etc.
Private universities- merit list is based upon aggregate marks ( 10% O levels or Matric, 40% A levels or Inter marks
and 50% MDCAT score)
● Extracurriculars-
Public universities do not care for extracurriculars or any other activities - there is no interview.
Private universities- keep volunteering opportunities, job placements in clinics in mind specifically but most universities just
look for things that make each candidate unique.
Medicine
NMDCAT- What is it and how to prepare?
It is a national test that all students wishing to apply to medical and dental colleges must give and attain
at least 65% to pass. *
1. Check out the MDCAT syllabus on the PMC website.
2. Identify gaps in your previous knowledge as an A levels student or FSC student.
3. Use inter books from Punjab Board and Federal Board to fill in gaps in your knowledge
4. Make sure to practice questions (available on the PMC website or tuition academies) as you go
along!!
Resources to help you get competitive scores-
● Medangle
● academies *
● Inter books
● STEPS/ KIPS practice books

  • 46. Medicine ● There are about 114 medical colleges in Pakistan with roughly 16500 seats every year. Can you guess how many people apply to these medical colleges all over Pakistan? ● Keeping the competition in mind it’s important that we make informed decisions on where we want to apply, keeping in mind the following factors- ○ Public or private? ○ Academics - who are the faculty? ○ Fees structure? ○ International Accreditation / National ranking? ○ Hospital associated with the college? ○ Facilities in university- extracurriculars etc? ○ Prestige of the university?
  • 47. Medicine Overseas vs Pakistani Students- ● According to PMC regulations Pakistani nationals residing outside Pakistan are to be eligible to apply to universities on open merit basis. ● In Sindh government universities the criteria for overseas students is if the candidates have completed the last two years of education outside Pakistan. ● Overseas Pakistanis are required to give the MDCAT, prove their overseas status by submitting their parent’s employment contract, apply online through portals and courier their documents. ● Fees structures- comparison of public vs private, while Dow Medical College has annual fees of around 80,000 - 90,000 Rs. for local and 17,000$ for overseas Pakistanis and Foreign Nationals. ● These regulations change every year so follow them on twitter and keep up with their notices!!

  • 49. Medicine Requirements- ● Academic- Most private universities require at least 70% in FSC or minimum Bs in A levels. Each private university forms their own aggregate depending on interview marks, MDCAT score etc. Private universities- merit list is based upon aggregate marks ( 10% O levels or Matric, 40% A levels or Inter marks and 50% MDCAT score) ● Extracurriculars- Public universities do not care for extracurriculars or any other activities - there is no interview. Private universities- keep volunteering opportunities, job placements in clinics in mind specifically but most universities just look for things that make each candidate unique.
  • 50. Medicine NMDCAT- What is it and how to prepare? It is a national test that all students wishing to apply to medical and dental colleges must give and attain at least 65% to pass. * 1. Check out the MDCAT syllabus on the PMC website. 2. Identify gaps in your previous knowledge as an A levels student or FSC student. 3. • 71. QnA

Editor's Notes

  1. Studying human behavior is never not helpful: The basic understanding of human behavior has helpful connotations in a range of aspects. This is evident in the fact that the field of psychology itself is vast, and branches out into many different specialisations like developmental psychology, clinical psychology, environmental psychology, neuropsychology, educational psychology, aviation psychology… the list goes on. Psychology is a very versatile field, and many job listings (especially in the UAE) require prospective employees to have studied psychology, anthropology or sociology (anything to do with understanding human behavior) for any given field. Fun fact: Lillian Evelyn Gilbreth was an industrial psychologist, and an efficiency expert. She created the first ever pedal bin. She also was the first to install shelves in fridges. The movie ‘Cheaper By The Dozen’ is loosely based on Gilbreth and her husband. There has been a new wave of mental health awareness, and there has also been an increasing demand for mental health professionals in almost every major employment sector [e.g. education, business, corporate, forensics, political, journalism, etc.]. One common concern for most parents and children is “why should we choose psychology over psychiatry?” Psychiatry requires 4 years of MBBS and only one added advantage of the ability to prescribe medicines. A majority of psychiatrists require extra opinions from neurologists, etc. and they also recommend their patients to psychologists, since prescribing medicines is now seen as a last resort for patient’s recovery.
  2. 68681 students apply and 16,362 medical seats
  3. So make sure you speak with passion in interviews for whatever extra curriculars you do or just simply share your passion for the subject.
