I presented these slides at Gates Foundation in early November 2015. The teach to reach summit was about Teaching and Learning strategies in the field of Immunization training.
As an introduction to the power of games for education and training, I first introduced the audience to the term "serious game". I then presented some case studies, some of our projects at Formula D, some work of others to describe the use of games in recruitment and health sector.
Over the last years, Formula D interactive has produced a variety of digital learning games. Two of these are cell phone games that take advantage of the rapidly growing reach of mobile internet and apps in Africa. Team C4 creates awareness for job opportunities in the customer contact centre sector in South Africa, whilst assessing the basic numeracy, literacy and comprehension level of players. SwaziYolo is a role playing game about HIV, whereas players become protagonists in an interactive novel. Both games are currently going through an M&E phase / BETA.
The presentation includes a fair amount of video which is not displayed here.

Stranger than fiction: The power of storytelling in gamesBrightwave Group
Stories can have an amazing impact on us. Vivid descriptions of actions not only stimulate our language centre, they also activate the parts of the brain that deal with movement. Stories resonate with us - affect the way we think and the things we do. But how do we harness their power for learning?
Storytelling in learning is nothing new, but recent learning perspectives and technologies, from immersive video to branching narratives and dynamic scoring have opened the door to new levels of involvement and impact.
At the eLearning Network event held on 14th July 2016 at Avuva HQ in London, Briightwave Group's Sophie Costin shared her latest insight and experiences of working with cutting edge storytelling techniques on high profile projects with a range of global clients, exploring:
• The benefit and effect of storytelling in branching learning games.
• Elements and principles of creating an immersive branching story.
• How to create your characters, generate content and write a story for a branching, decision-based game.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

There is an excessive body of research that confirms the importance of games for learning.
In short: It is undisputed that play and games are fundamental to learning.
Who of you likes playing games o their cell phone?
So why do we not make more use of games in education.
When I came to Cape Town 15 years back I found the most beautiful city in the world.
I also witnessed an education crisis.
The term “serious game” describes a game that has been purposely designed for an outcome other than pure entertainment.
There are serious games for a host of different purposes and audiences. These include the math and reading games we try to get our kids to play on the iPad. But there is also a host of very socialized applications of games, such as ….
Also the corporate world has discovered the benefits of motivational systems used in games, which they call gamification. Since this term has become somewhat of a buzzword it needs to be highlighted that gamification is not the same as a serious game. Gamification uses elements and the language of games to spice up otherwise boring processes, such as filling out a form, responding to a shopping promo or completing an eLearning course. Gamified processes often include game like rewards such as stars and badges for completed tasks or send players on missions. However, significant game elements such as an immersive environment, storyline, characters, etc. are mostly missing from gamified environments.
For today I would like to focus on the potential of serious games in the field of immunization education.
I will first talk for a while about the several benefits of games as a communication and learning medium and than introduce to you the quickly growing field of health games. Lastly, I will hopefully inspire you with some examples and considerations for serious games in your specific area are of immunization.
Design considerations
Storyline with aspirational characters
Career messages are part of the story
Engaging mechanics for repeated play
Set of mini games to test different skills
Analytics dashboard with player data
Important for any game is a captivating storyline which defines the challenge. In TeamC4 the player becomes part of a group of “agents” who save the city from Grumpsters using skills and behaviors which are seen important in customer contact centres.
Each character represents a specific qualities needed in a call centre, such as attentive listening.
The characters introduce players to the 4 mini games
The games have been designed with the guidance of recruitment professionals
Basic numeracy, literacy and English comprehension skills are some of the few requirements for a job in a call center.
Traffic trouble requires the player to quickly assess numeric values.
In “Broken Letters” players’ level of English Grammar is put to the test.
To save cupcakes from Grumpsters, players have to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
Gamified and interactive CV generation
What is it that makes games so interesting for learning
A good example for an experiential Learning Game is a the Open Budgets Game. The International Budget Partnership collaborates with civil society around the world to use budget analysis and advocacy as a tool to improve effective governance and reduce poverty.
IBP offers tools and resources for capacity building , one of which is the Open Budgets Game, which teaches players how civil society and individuals can use budget analysis and advocacy tools to change lives.
One of the most interesting features of video games is the opportunity for players to experience alternative narratives. In the tradition of make believe and role play, players of video games often step into the shoes of another person or live an alternative reality which allows them to experiment with different behaviors. So, video games not only let people participate in alternative worlds, they also allow for the exploration of alternative selves.
At Formula D we have designed a number of “Choices” games which let learners explore cause and consequence around topics of Health, Environment and Life Skills.
