SB 1 changes how teachers in Indiana are evaluated and paid. It eliminates an advisory board and moves authority over teacher training and licensing to the state. Teacher salaries will now be based on performance evaluations that incorporate student test scores and classroom observations, in addition to experience and education. Teachers rated ineffective or in need of improvement will not receive raises. The bill also changes policies around tenure, reductions in force, and the cancellation of teacher contracts.
