Introduction and Objective of SIWES
Human resource development can be said to
embrace all diverse processes, aimed at transforming
people to enable them contribute more effectively to
social and economic development.
Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)
was introduced into the educational system in Nigeria
by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in 1973.
.
Introduction and Objective of SIWES cont.
The objective of SIWES program which prepares students
for the world of work, has become an appreciable idea in
the process of manpower development and training in
Nigeria.
This Skill training program is aimed at:
1.Bridge the gap existing between theory and practical,
2.Expose and prepare students and other professional
educational programs, in Nigeria tertiary institution to real
life work situation after graduation from school.

3.exposing the trainees (students) to machines,
equipments, chemicals, professional work methods and
various safety measure required to perform effectively in
today’s work environments.
4.Make transition from institution of higher learning to the
world of work easier.
5.Enlisting and strengthening employers involvement in
the entire educational process of preparing students for
employment.

This scheme is a tripartite program involving the
students, the school and the industry (employers).
It is not a holiday resort, neither is it a holiday job as
viewed by some trainees
Documents and Documentation Required
The Following documents and documentation are required to
be done by the students in other to illegible for the Student
Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES):
1.Original and photocopy of All School Fees Receipts from
year one to year three (6 receipts in All).
2.Original and photocopy of All School Identification cards
from year one to year three (3 ID Cards in All).
3.Duly filled, and passport photograph attached, Student
Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) log book
purchased at the Schools’ bookshop.
Documents and Documentation Required cont.
4.One Passport photograph with the following informations written
at the back: Students’ Names, Students’ Matriculation Number,
Student’s Department, Students’ Telephone Number (which is
Skpe compliance) and Students’ email address.
5.A waterproof file Jacket, which is duly inscribed with the following
informations: Students’ Names, Students’ Matriculation
Number, Student’s Department, Students’ Telephone Number
(which is Skpe compliance) and Students’ email address.
All of these documents (Photocopies) will put in the file jacket and
brought for the collection of the students Industrial Attachment
letter.
Students’ Expectations From Industrial
Attachment
As an industrial trainee many things are expected of you.
This is based primarily on the following:
1.To acquire knowledge and experience in the real work
situation one is likely to encounter after one might have left
school.
2.To put into practice what you have studied and learnt in
the classroom.
3.To known methods and technique in handling equipment,
machinery and chemicals that may be available in such
organization.

Based on the above mentioned, the trainee is expected to:
•Know the organizations’ aims and objective, particularly the
department attached to.
•understand the organization settings and it Management
structure.
•Channel of communication available in the organization.
•System of controls and office procedure or protocol in each
departments.
•Functions of various department/sections in the organization.
Students’ Expectations cont.
•Comparative trading position of the organization for the
current and previous year.
•Production processes and workflow chart of the organization.
•Know about the organizations’ equipments, tools and methods
in carrying out its services or productions.
• Qualification required for recruitment by the human resource
department of the organization.
•In addition the student are expected to be of good behavior
and well disciplined.
Students’ Expectations cont.
It should be note that monitoring will be done both by the industrial
based supervisor and the schools’ representatives.
•This monitoring will be an unannounced visit from the school
authority to the place of your assignment.
•It will done at least twice a month per student.
•Your log book must be signed on every visit with the view of providing
effective supervision and guidance.
•Questions will be asked and these questions documented as
required, thus forming the basis for your grading in line with your
industrial based supervisors
•The dressing and comportment of the students will be commented
on.
Who Should be asked to repeat SIWES?
A trainee student shall be asked to repeat his or her SIWES
program if he or she does the following:
•Fail to participate in SIWES
•Play truancy during the period of his or her Industrial Training
program.
•He or She is dismissed by the employer
•Changes the place of Industrial Attachment without the
knowledge of the School authorities.
•Failed to comply with all the registration process involved
before proceeding for Industrial Attachment.
Conclusion
Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a realistic
program, that can assist the country attain the mush desired self
reliance.
The scheme is continually exposing student to take advantage of their
personal endowment to develop their skills (particularly Soft skills) and
capabilities.
The scheme offers students the opportunity to acquire sufficient
confidence and competence in order to adapt quickly to the industrial
work environs after their graduation.
Thus, the need for effective participation in this scheme by students
can not be over emphasis, in other to realize the objective of this great
scheme.
