How good is your metadata? Helping readers find the content they want, in a well-organised way, is fundamental to selling more books online. There are set rules aimed at standardising how publishers, booksellers and others describe each book. Kieron Smith (Digital Director, Blackwells Bookshops) walked us through what we should be thinking about and what will ultimately lead to more online sales at BookMachine in Oxford last week. Here are his slides.
This presentation is designed for use when covering books in an introductory mass media course. Content includes early books, book types, types of readers, book industry, books clubs, authors, blockbuster syndrome and books by crooks
The document summarizes key information from the London Book Fair in April 2015. Some of the main points include:
- Growth is seen in international, children's, and non-fiction books while genres like romance remain strong.
- Ebook adoption is leveling off with print and ebooks working together to reach readers.
- The publishing industry is becoming more fluid with different players taking on new roles.
- International markets like China, India, and Latin America continue to grow in importance.
- Self-published authors are getting large advances from traditional publishers for breakout success stories.
- Many topics are covered in educational seminars at the fair to help authors.
- Trends include strong sales in children
The library provides a refuge for LGBTQ+ individuals, especially for young people exploring their identity. It is important that LGBTQ+ titles and resources are easily accessible on shelves and through catalogs. When building collections, librarians should be aware of new titles, include more than just coming out stories, and have historical and social non-fiction works. While over 13,000 LGBTQ+ titles are available through Irish libraries, some works have been lost or withdrawn over time, showing a continued need to replace and expand these collections.
ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning. It is a software system that integrates all departments and functions of a company into a single system for data sharing, reporting and analysis. ERP aims to manage manufacturing, supply chain, inventory, human resources, accounting and other core business processes in a single database system. It allows all employees across different departments to access the same real-time information and update it. Some key advantages are standardized processes and data across the company, while disadvantages include high costs of implementation, customization and training.

The document discusses cross-site request forgery (XSRF/CSRF) attacks and how to prevent them in ASP.NET Core applications. It explains that XSRF attacks trick authenticated users into performing unwanted actions on a web application. To prevent XSRF, ASP.NET Core uses antiforgery tokens that are validated on requests. It provides built-in support for adding antiforgery tokens to MVC forms and tag helpers. Additionally, antiforgery middleware can validate tokens on incoming requests to the application.

Choosing Children's Literature 2007 versionJohan Koren
This document discusses what makes good children's literature. It provides perspectives from experts in children's literature on qualities of effective books. Key points include:
- Good children's books engage and hold a child's attention without forcing them to read. They expose children to the pleasures of reading.
- Effective books vary depending on genre but should be clear, engaging, and fit the intended purpose. Stories should sing to kids.
- Qualities of good children's books include stimulating imagination, having appealing language/format, keeping a child's attention, and getting them involved in the story.
- Good young adult books and classics deal honestly with teenage issues but are less complex than famous adult works. Short stories also
A good children's book selection policy is important to avoid censorship challenges and provide guidance for librarians. Selection policies outline the goals for a children's collection and procedures for how books will be chosen. They help defend against accusations of bias and provide transparency in decision making. Some key factors that policies address include developmental appropriateness, appeal to readers, and inclusion of diverse perspectives.
The document discusses how and why a secondary school library reorganized its collection by genre using the Follett Destiny library management system. It lists several positives of genre organization including opportunities to discuss genres with students, showing collection strengths and weaknesses, and providing statistics on collection use. It also notes challenges like not being able to pinpoint the genre of every book and the large amount of work required. The school decided on key genres, assigned colors, and moved books to genre sections while also changing location data in Destiny. The reflection found students and staff preferred the new genre-based layout and it made book selection easier.
Smashwords Survey Helps Authors Sell more eBooks (Smashwords tutorial series,...Smashwords, Inc.
Writers will learn how to make their books more appealing to readers in this comprehensive (and unconventional) tutorial presented by Mark Coker, founder of Smashwords. Have you ever wondered if readers prefer longer or shorter books? How about pricing? Will you sell more books at a lower price or a higher price? Which price yields you the greatest overall earnings? Which price helps you grow your readership the fastest? How and why might your book sales fluctuate over time? Do books with shorter titles appeal more to readers than long titles? These and many other questions are answered in the annual Smashwords Survey. This video examines the results of the 2013 Smashwords Survey, first published in May 2013. Smashwords analyzed over $12 million in book sales covering over 120,000 books over an 11-month period, and then posed useful (and some not-so-useful) questions at the data, all with the goal of identifying tips and tricks that could help authors make their books more desirable to readers. Some of the results are insightful and other results were just plain silly. Enjoy! View the video of this presentation at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rrl4NExo3Y
A good children's book engages children's imagination, uses fun language and pictures, and keeps children's attention while involving them in the story. It should be developmentally appropriate and stimulate learning. Classroom libraries are important for children to practice reading, but some argue centralized school libraries are more cost effective. Selection policies help guide book choices and address challenges in a transparent way to avoid censorship accusations.
This document provides a summary of a presentation on eBooks and eReaders given by Stephen Abram. The presentation addressed questions about what is really happening with eBooks, where all the changes in eBooks and publishing are taking us, and the role of special librarians in the future information landscape. It discussed topics like the growth in eBook penetration in different library sectors from 2010 to 2012, benefits and drawbacks of eBooks from different perspectives, and challenges related to eBook formats, devices, and pricing models. The document emphasizes that this is an evolving area and recommends remaining open to innovation while keeping librarian values as a touchstone.
This unit focuses on improving students' ability to make connections between literature and their own lives. Students will learn to summarize texts, express opinions about literature, and incorporate self-to-self, self-to-text, and self-to-world connections to better understand what they read. Assessments include double-entry journals where students note aspects of texts that make them think as well as book chats where they summarize and recommend books to others.
This document provides guidance on how to choose quality nonfiction books. It outlines several characteristics to consider, including authority, accuracy, literary artistry, purpose, scope, depth, rigor, relevance, interest, student preference, background, teacher observations, visual literacy skills, and types of visuals. Choosing quality nonfiction involves evaluating these characteristics and selecting books that interest and connect with students at their level while enhancing understanding. Enlisting student input can help identify books that will engage them in learning.
This document summarizes a presentation given by David Jonsson about e-books in Sweden. It addresses several questions:
- Sweden uses an "Access model" where libraries pay a fee of €2 each time an e-book is loaned, with half going to the distributor Elib and half to the publisher.
- Several reports have found declining reading abilities in Sweden, especially for young males, and e-books may help engage this group.
- Initially the system worked well, but the cost of lending popular titles like "I am Zlatan" ballooned, straining library budgets.
- Other issues include a poor user experience, potential privacy concerns over tracking reading habits, and a limited
This document outlines a unit on books, stories, poems, and rhymes for children. It provides learning objectives for students to identify age-appropriate books and materials, explore titles, list features of books for different age groups, and explain the benefits of sharing books. Students visit a library to learn about its services and ISBN numbers. They create materials for parents about how sharing stories, rhymes and poems aids children's language development and learning. The importance of selecting age-appropriate books and exposing children to reading is discussed.

• The ability to link all these drops of data into one big picture
which can connect people to book information beyond each
individual data bucket.
• Why when I click on an author name does it not disambiguate
between two authors of the same name e.g. Stephen King
• Ways to use information in new and exciting ways of
visualisation.
• Some of this is technical.
• Some is human.
23. • Metadata is exciting.
• Searching for and finding titles in such a large pool is challenging.
• How does your data help a customer in this context.
• The importance of getting the basics right can’t be underestimated.
• There is huge potential in additional partnerships over data and information linking
that could add value for readers.

We thought we’d seen this before...
In the late 1960s Marshall McLuhan highlighted that the Xerox came as a reverse flip as the end of the Gutenberg cycle; whereas Gutenberg madeeverybody a reader, Xerox makes everybody a publisher.
That a wonderful product has been reduced to a flat image and no discernible difference between an ebook and a physical one

6. Why can’t I see all the versions of the same book? (i.e. is there a new version of this OOP title? Graphic Novel Version, abridged, audio etc.?
7. Can I search for a book in Latin and non-Latin character sets, a title may well have a dual existence – for example in Greek and Latin Alphabets
8. Why can’t I see other language versions of the same title? If you want to find the French edition of ‘A Study in Scarlett’ then how will you know it’s called ‘Une étude en rouge’?
9. Even problematic in a global environment around books retitled in the same language UK e.g. Love in Black and White
10. What age range/academic level is this book in the school system of the country I’m in now? BIC and BISAC codes include some school levels for the UK/US – more tenuous in other locations but Thema could help.
11. Customers often know part of a book – ‘it has a poem with daffodils in it’
12. Dimension data – I need to know how big and heavy the book is otherwise I cannot calculate the correct price, nor help a customer find the right one
& many more of course
So…
The Catcher in the Rye is currently classed as:
BIC : FA Modern and Contemporary Fiction
Under Thema – it has the potential to become much richer indeed:

Geographic and time qualifiers
IKBB-US-NAKC – New York City

Thema also has adult colouring books -
Organisational access to global resources – essential to serve and adapt to these changes on a global level.
Used to be about creating a product for a global audience.
Now it has been reversed and it’s one product for each customer, whether created or co-created with global resources accessed.

The fastest growing brand on the planet at the moment is Android – it’s shared across an ecosystem of organisations and individuals
What inspired the book – what was inspired by the book?
Opportunities to link via semantic data – The Suspicions of Mr Whicher non fiction title by Kate Summerscale – linking of data could reveal where it was set in Wiltshire, that it has won the Whitbread Award – that it’s about the first detective case in the UK, a case that inspired Dickens and Conan Doyle opening up many titles and opportunities for further sales. Data represented on the web semantically is growing rapidly.
It’ll be a challenge but an important one to challenge if we want to get beyond set product data and link all book knowledge in a meaningful way.
