What is Selection
• The Process of deciding which materials should be added to the library
collection.
• Selection of Library materials are a result of user feedback from
Consumer needs assessment Survey’s conducted by the Librarians or
Recommendation’s provided by Library users.
• The User of the Library is in control of the Collection Development of
the Library.
Why Selection ?
• Acquire Material that suit the user needs
• Acquire materials that will attract more consumers
• Acquire materials that will be used by the Consumers
• Avoid acquiring non valuable material for consumers

Books are for use implications
Enunciation: Books are to be
used for their content.
Library Building: The Exterior of
the building should be inviting,
should have glass wall and
soothing interior theme.
Fittings and Furniture: Racks
should be short enough while
tables and chairs should be
comfortable
Gangways: Gangways between
Rows of Book stacks should be
generous, so should gangways
between reading tables.
Lighting: colour should smoothen
the glare of natural light.
Ventilation: should have the
benefit of natural ventilation.
First law continues
Library Staff: Geniality,
Scholaship and professional
Competencies should be first
consideration when recruiting.
Book Selection: Public libraries
should not waste money on costly
book in infrequent demand

reader to have access to them

emphasises on the arrangement of
boks in a classified sequence
based on their content.the
arrangement shall aslo attract the
attention of the reader to books of
the nighbouring subject, thus the
chance for these neighbouring
books getting their readers will
increase.
