A screening of 44 pupils aged 7-19 with social, emotional and behavioral difficulties found that the majority had undetected language problems. Pre-screening, 18% were identified as having language difficulties, but post-screening 75% showed mild to severe difficulties understanding and using language. This is consistent with other research finding 60-95% of children with behavioral issues have communication problems. Those with unidentified language issues are more likely to develop further behavioral problems and mental health issues. Early screening for language issues is important to avoid misdiagnosis and ensure children receive proper support.
