The exhibition "Archival to Contemporary: Six Decades of the Sculptors Guild" featured works by over 50 sculptors ranging from renowned artists like Louise Bourgeois and David Smith to more contemporary members. Curated by Jerelyn Hanrahan, the exhibition celebrated the history and diversity of the Sculptors Guild of New York by showcasing luminary historical works alongside more conceptual modern sculptures exploring new media and techniques. The exhibition was hosted at the Hillwood Art Museum at Long Island University from January 30 to April 8, 2006.

Six Decades of the Sculptors Guild
Curated by Jerelyn Hanrahan
3. The Sculptors Guild of New York has a renown and rich history of visionary and avante garde artists of divergent aesthetics, and its members have been contributing to
the cultural landscape of New York, for over 70 years through public and professional exhibitions.
This exhibition is a celebration of the Sculptors Guild History and its members, from renown artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Jose de Creeft, Chaim Gross, Louise
Nevelson, Clement Meadmore, George Rickey, and
Mark DiSuvero, to the more contemporary, and assimilated sculptures of our new members addressing, concept, installation and computer generated sculpture.
The Sculptors Guild Membership is based on nominated sculptors with proven qualities of personal and professional excellence, and the exhibition celebrates the diver-
sity with which artists have explored the third dimension
Archival to Contemporary, Six Decades of the Sculptors Guild is an exhilarating frenzy of sculpture ranging from the luminary works of Louise Bourgeous and David
Smith, to the acrobatic figures of Chaim Gross, the erotic aluminum wall relief’s of Hal Buckner, to the expressionistic life-size castings of Leonda Finke, and the
investigation of the beauty in obesity by Mary-Ellen Scherl Hybrids of reality, fantasy and displacement morphed in a hysterical assemblage of legs, (like a futuristic
Hans Bellmer) in the work of Michael Rees, and continue in the work of Ann Chahbandour, in a fable like bronze narrative of a wolf being converted by Saint Frances
in a boxing ring .
All this while Eric Guzman’s wall sculptures redefine kinetic, and the engineered light sensitive installation BION of Adam Brown ignites the Tilles Center for the
Performing Arts. The history of sculpture is evident throughout the exhibition. Content is addressed and references to the ready-made are visable in the steel covered
Bible of James Greco, as Peter Dudeks installation Monument to my Lovelife combines Art de Povera (found objects) fused with a Mondrian sensibility, and Kim
Kimball presents a radical renewal of Brancusi’s Endless Tower, in his 16’ construction made of pipe cleaners...
My exhibition criteria were to celebrate the past, the present, and the future of the Guild, exhibiting the evolution and consistent re-definition of the third dimension.
Through visits to foundations and the studios of contemporary sculptors who are currently members, I discovered the rich history of the Guild, and recognized an
inspired ebb and flow of influences ranging from traditional, contextual, conceptual and technological approaches that continue to redefine sculpture in the 20th
Century.
