How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Throughout every stage of this project, I have faced a numerous number of new technologies in
order to create the finished project.

The Journey
Pre-Production
The Pre-Production stage of the music video consisted researching and planning for our music video.
As a group we research different conventions in order to get an idea of what music videos contain.
It all started off with developing an idea from the song choices made available. Using Itunes we
discovered this one song that we knew would be best for us. That is why we chose the song ‘In the
Bag’ by Wiley. The genre of the song is Grime and so with Grime being a genre which doesn’t use big
budgets, it enables us to relate as we didn’t have a big budget.

The Internet

The internet was a big tool in this media project as it enabled us to research aspects of the grime
genre. I was able to look at websites such as google images to see other digi-packs and magazine
adverts. However despite that it was hard to find loads of digi-pack and magazine examples which
we could get inspiration from.
Blogger

Blogger was used to create our music video blog. It has been used since the start of the project. I

learnt a lot from blogger. It was my main source of research storage. As a group it was really
helpful as it had an option to create labels that would separate our work from one another and
produced a more visualised way to look at our research. I found it very useful because it was
easy to import pictures, videos and sound clips in order to support my research. There was a
lot of cross media convergence going on as Blogger would allow Youtube videos to be
uploaded and so they would promote Youtube. Unlike a document, blogger would allow me
to include skins, which would make it more appealing for people to view them. A major thing
that was helpful in blogger was the fact that I could leave posts as drafts and finish them later.
I could also edit posts whenever I pleased.

Twitter

After deciding on our song, I started off by seeking permission by using a social media website
Twitter. Twitter was very useful in terms of having quick access to the artist. All I had to do was
follow Wiley on Twitter which was easy to do as now-a-days artists have a verified account which
helps separate the spoofed accounts from the real ones and so I was able to recognise which
account Wiley’s was. This wasn’t helpful as Wiley has thousands of followers who tweet him and so
there is a minimal chance that he would see my tweet. Back in the day when Twitter was still
growing maybe it would have been easier but Twitter has over 500 million users now.
Youtube

Youtube was a massive help as it helped me look at other grime videos. We even looked at the Hip
Hop genre so we could easily identify the difference between what the Hip Hop and Grime genre
did. We took ideas from music videos on Youtube as it was a great visual tool to get inspiration from.
It was great being able to use Youtube to analyse.

Excel

Excel is software that I used to store my target audience research. I found it useful because I was
able to present my results in the form of bar and pie charts. This made it easier for people to clearly
see the information. I decided that I would use primary research as that way I know that I am getting
more accurate answers than if I was to do secondary research or questionnaires through website.
Even though I could have got more people to fill it in on the internet, doing it without the internet
meant that I wouldn’t be able to misinterpret what they’ve written. As well as that at school I was
able to target our main demographic (16-24) Most of the people I interviewed were (16-18) and so I
used school as a good time to talk to them.

Prezi

Prezi is like powerpoint. I love the fact that I could access my prezi’s from anywhere unlike
powerpoint. As with powerpoint I would have to email it myself and if I forgot to do that I would
have had to start from the beginning. At least with Prezi, it saved via cloud and so I can access it
anywhere with internet. However that was a problem I encounter when the internet wasn’t working
on the computer and so I had to wait. Prezi gave variation to my research as I could present it in
another way. Prezi is more creative and flexible giving you freedom in what you’re doing.
Slideshare

Slideshare was simple to use as it enabled me to view my powerpoint presentations. I used
slideshare rarely as it lack that interactive feature so I couldn’t do much with it but it was really
helpful in terms of viewing my presentation.
Pre-Production

Facebook

Facebook is a social networking site, which we used to communicate. Facebook allowed us to create
events and organise ourselves. We made an event for our music video inviting people to come and
be a part of it. Facebook was really useful as people were able to say yes or no and as we didn’t have
everyone’s number, it was easy to reach them. It also told us who was coming and who wasn’t.

Filming
Digital camera

We used a Sony camera to film our music video. It would have been better to have a camera with
higher resolution as we did a lot of night shots and so that way it might have helped with the filming
in the dark scenes. The camera was still helpful as it had a digital led screen which enabled us to
view what we were filming and allowed us to playback our footage. The different effects helped us
achieve filming efficiently. The camera had an anti-shaking feature which didn’t really work that
effectively as it was clear in post-production because it was quite shaky in some places. With the SD
card in the digital camera it meant that we could film without the need to worry if we would have
space or not.
Tripod

The tripod enabled us to have a variation of shots, as we wanted to keep the audience interested. It
was extremely helpful making the shots straight and prevent from shaking although when trying to
pan, it didn’t pan smoothly enough.

Torch

The torch was a light source we used to enable the audience to see in the dark areas. As it was a big
torch, it meant that we could use the torch from far away. However the torch did frequently run out
of battery and so it restricted to how long we could use it.

Reflector

The reflector helped produce a more natural lightening with the torch instead of just using the torch.
It helped certain areas of the room clear to see.

Dolly

The dolly was very useful for tracking our action. It managed to work on many different surfaces,
which was important for us as we were working with carpet, wood and stone.

Still Camera
We used the camera on the iPhone to capture the images for the digi-pack and the magazine advert.
The IPhone had lots of filters which we could decide on and would help with during post production.
The only problem was that

Post Production
Freesound.org

During the editing process, we needed a rewind sound effect that we could use in our music video.
We looked on the freesound website and we managed to find the right one for us. However when
we tried to download it, it wouldn’t let us so we click the link and it directed us to Youtube.

Youtube.converter
Youtube converter allowed us to convert the free sound clip we found on that website into an MP3
format.

Premier Pro

Premier Pro was a big step to make as it was new software that I have never encountered before
and so we were introduced to this new technology. A big problem that we faced was that every
time we would playback a new edit, it would corrupt. It went to the point where it broke down and
failed to open. The uploading process prolonged our Final Cut as it would fail to upload saying that
there was an unknown error. After noticing that the problem had something to do with the
rendering, we found out that it was our effects that were the problem. It didn’t like our effects so in
the end we had to get rid of them and upload without them. This was a real pain as our music video
was very dark and we needed to brightness and contrast and colour correction to fix it. Other than
that Premier Pro allowed us to organise our video clips in a nice order which was helpful because we
had loads of footage and organising them in an order made it easier to identify where things were.
There were two screens on Premier Pro where one had the footage and the other had our project.
At first we had were unaware on how to use Premier pro but slowly we got familiar with it and
managed to create our final cut. Premier Pro had a wide variety of effects which we took into
account. Our most common tool we used was the razor tool. The razor tool was what we used to
incorporate the quick cut edit. A main effect that we used was the Fade in effect. This effect we used
at the start and end of the video. As a typical convention in most music video we decided to use that
in our video.

Youtube

Youtube was very helpful in terms of uploading my rough-cut and final cut. It made it easy to share
with others so that they could see it and comment on it. The fact that it was free meant that anyone
around the world could see it. This uploading time was time consuming but it weighs out the cons of
putting it on a DVD.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe photoshop was an important piece of technology that we used to create our digi-pack and
magazine advert. Photoshop allowed us to produce a professional piece of work. I learnt about the
filters we could implement into our project. Without Photoshop we wouldn’t have been able to add
in a logo and the font onto the magazine and digi-pack.

Script for video presentation question 4

  • 1. Script for video presentation question 4 How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? Throughout every stage of this project, I have faced a numerous number of new technologies in order to create the finished project. The Journey Pre-Production The Pre-Production stage of the music video consisted researching and planning for our music video. As a group we research different conventions in order to get an idea of what music videos contain. It all started off with developing an idea from the song choices made available. Using Itunes we discovered this one song that we knew would be best for us. That is why we chose the song ‘In the Bag’ by Wiley. The genre of the song is Grime and so with Grime being a genre which doesn’t use big budgets, it enables us to relate as we didn’t have a big budget. The Internet The internet was a big tool in this media project as it enabled us to research aspects of the grime genre. I was able to look at websites such as google images to see other digi-packs and magazine adverts. However despite that it was hard to find loads of digi-pack and magazine examples which we could get inspiration from.
  • 2. Blogger Blogger was used to create our music video blog. It has been used since the start of the project. I learnt a lot from blogger. It was my main source of research storage. As a group it was really helpful as it had an option to create labels that would separate our work from one another and produced a more visualised way to look at our research. I found it very useful because it was easy to import pictures, videos and sound clips in order to support my research. There was a lot of cross media convergence going on as Blogger would allow Youtube videos to be uploaded and so they would promote Youtube. Unlike a document, blogger would allow me to include skins, which would make it more appealing for people to view them. A major thing that was helpful in blogger was the fact that I could leave posts as drafts and finish them later. I could also edit posts whenever I pleased. Twitter After deciding on our song, I started off by seeking permission by using a social media website Twitter. Twitter was very useful in terms of having quick access to the artist. All I had to do was follow Wiley on Twitter which was easy to do as now-a-days artists have a verified account which helps separate the spoofed accounts from the real ones and so I was able to recognise which account Wiley’s was. This wasn’t helpful as Wiley has thousands of followers who tweet him and so there is a minimal chance that he would see my tweet. Back in the day when Twitter was still growing maybe it would have been easier but Twitter has over 500 million users now.
  • 3. Youtube Youtube was a massive help as it helped me look at other grime videos. We even looked at the Hip Hop genre so we could easily identify the difference between what the Hip Hop and Grime genre did. We took ideas from music videos on Youtube as it was a great visual tool to get inspiration from. It was great being able to use Youtube to analyse. Excel Excel is software that I used to store my target audience research. I found it useful because I was able to present my results in the form of bar and pie charts. This made it easier for people to clearly see the information. I decided that I would use primary research as that way I know that I am getting more accurate answers than if I was to do secondary research or questionnaires through website. Even though I could have got more people to fill it in on the internet, doing it without the internet meant that I wouldn’t be able to misinterpret what they’ve written. As well as that at school I was able to target our main demographic (16-24) Most of the people I interviewed were (16-18) and so I used school as a good time to talk to them. Prezi Prezi is like powerpoint. I love the fact that I could access my prezi’s from anywhere unlike powerpoint. As with powerpoint I would have to email it myself and if I forgot to do that I would have had to start from the beginning. At least with Prezi, it saved via cloud and so I can access it anywhere with internet. However that was a problem I encounter when the internet wasn’t working on the computer and so I had to wait. Prezi gave variation to my research as I could present it in another way. Prezi is more creative and flexible giving you freedom in what you’re doing.
  • 4. Slideshare Slideshare was simple to use as it enabled me to view my powerpoint presentations. I used slideshare rarely as it lack that interactive feature so I couldn’t do much with it but it was really helpful in terms of viewing my presentation. Pre-Production Facebook Facebook is a social networking site, which we used to communicate. Facebook allowed us to create events and organise ourselves. We made an event for our music video inviting people to come and be a part of it. Facebook was really useful as people were able to say yes or no and as we didn’t have everyone’s number, it was easy to reach them. It also told us who was coming and who wasn’t. Filming Digital camera We used a Sony camera to film our music video. It would have been better to have a camera with higher resolution as we did a lot of night shots and so that way it might have helped with the filming in the dark scenes. The camera was still helpful as it had a digital led screen which enabled us to view what we were filming and allowed us to playback our footage. The different effects helped us achieve filming efficiently. The camera had an anti-shaking feature which didn’t really work that effectively as it was clear in post-production because it was quite shaky in some places. With the SD card in the digital camera it meant that we could film without the need to worry if we would have space or not.
  • 5. Tripod The tripod enabled us to have a variation of shots, as we wanted to keep the audience interested. It was extremely helpful making the shots straight and prevent from shaking although when trying to pan, it didn’t pan smoothly enough. Torch The torch was a light source we used to enable the audience to see in the dark areas. As it was a big torch, it meant that we could use the torch from far away. However the torch did frequently run out of battery and so it restricted to how long we could use it. Reflector The reflector helped produce a more natural lightening with the torch instead of just using the torch. It helped certain areas of the room clear to see. Dolly The dolly was very useful for tracking our action. It managed to work on many different surfaces, which was important for us as we were working with carpet, wood and stone. Still Camera
  • 6. We used the camera on the iPhone to capture the images for the digi-pack and the magazine advert. The IPhone had lots of filters which we could decide on and would help with during post production. The only problem was that Post Production Freesound.org During the editing process, we needed a rewind sound effect that we could use in our music video. We looked on the freesound website and we managed to find the right one for us. However when we tried to download it, it wouldn’t let us so we click the link and it directed us to Youtube. Youtube.converter Youtube converter allowed us to convert the free sound clip we found on that website into an MP3 format. Premier Pro Premier Pro was a big step to make as it was new software that I have never encountered before and so we were introduced to this new technology. A big problem that we faced was that every time we would playback a new edit, it would corrupt. It went to the point where it broke down and failed to open. The uploading process prolonged our Final Cut as it would fail to upload saying that there was an unknown error. After noticing that the problem had something to do with the rendering, we found out that it was our effects that were the problem. It didn’t like our effects so in the end we had to get rid of them and upload without them. This was a real pain as our music video was very dark and we needed to brightness and contrast and colour correction to fix it. Other than that Premier Pro allowed us to organise our video clips in a nice order which was helpful because we had loads of footage and organising them in an order made it easier to identify where things were. There were two screens on Premier Pro where one had the footage and the other had our project.
  • 7. At first we had were unaware on how to use Premier pro but slowly we got familiar with it and managed to create our final cut. Premier Pro had a wide variety of effects which we took into account. Our most common tool we used was the razor tool. The razor tool was what we used to incorporate the quick cut edit. A main effect that we used was the Fade in effect. This effect we used at the start and end of the video. As a typical convention in most music video we decided to use that in our video. Youtube Youtube was very helpful in terms of uploading my rough-cut and final cut. It made it easy to share with others so that they could see it and comment on it. The fact that it was free meant that anyone around the world could see it. This uploading time was time consuming but it weighs out the cons of putting it on a DVD. Adobe Photoshop Adobe photoshop was an important piece of technology that we used to create our digi-pack and magazine advert. Photoshop allowed us to produce a professional piece of work. I learnt about the filters we could implement into our project. Without Photoshop we wouldn’t have been able to add in a logo and the font onto the magazine and digi-pack. Evaluation Slideshare Scribd
  • 8. Scribd allowed me to place this word document onto my blogger. It gave that variation of softwares to use then just the same software each time.
