This document discusses using chlorine dioxide to treat drinking water systems in agriculture. It notes that bacteria can harbor in water systems and form biofilms, which manual cleaning cannot fully remove. Constant dosing of chlorine dioxide can destroy biofilms and bacteria to provide 24/7 protection. Scotmas has developed dosing systems and programs to safely and effectively use chlorine dioxide treatment in poultry and livestock operations. This is expected to improve production performance and biosecurity.

Drinking Water Systems
• Water Makes up at least 55%
of Body Weight
• Layers and Breeders consume
TWICE as much water than
feed
• Doesn’t your water system
deserve more attention in your
biosecurity program?

5. Typical Problems Found In
Scotmas Agriculture

Drinking Water Systems
• Potentially hazardous bacteria
such as E. coli, Salmonella
and Campylobacter can
harbour in the water system
and break out to infect your
stock
• Contaminated water is
unpalatable, reducing
consumption and growth
• Scale problems mean that
nipple drinkers can leak,
damaging the litter

6. The Traditional Approach
Scotmas Agriculture

• Many operators will manually
clean and disinfect water tanks
at the end of every cycle
THIS IS NOT SUFFICIENT!

7. Scotmas Agriculture
water treatment . hygiene . environmental care
As bacteria begin to grow and
multiply unchecked in your water
system, they cling to the surfaces
of tanks and pipework – forming a
slimy layer called biofilm.
As well as harbouring a number of
dangerous bacteria, this biofilm
also begins to eat into your
pipework, and attach to scale and
other deposits.
Very soon, your water pipework
looks as if it has been coated in
scale and slime. Chlorine
disinfections are not powerful
enough to remove this slime – and
it remains there to build up over Biofilm Encrusted
Water Pipe
time.

13. The Traditional Approach
Scotmas Agriculture
water treatment . hygiene . environmental care
• Even if you are currently using
“new” biocides such as
Hydrogen Peroxide or PAA for
tank disinfection at the end of
the cycle, consider this:
• Pathogenic bacteria within a
water system can double in
number every 20 minutes, and
can begin to reform a biofilm
just 2 hours after disinfection
• Would it be enough to pay
attention to other parts of your
biosecurity system once per
cycle?

14. New Methods
Scotmas Agriculture
water treatment . hygiene . environmental care
• Scotmas pioneered constant
dosing of poultry drinking
water systems in order to
provide 24/7 stock protection
• A chlorine dioxide biocide,
specifically designed for
agricultural systems is added
at very low levels to protect
against biofilm formation
• Scale and other contaminants
are also removed from the
system, improving overall
water quality
• System now widely adopted by
major companies world wide

15. Advantages of Chlorine Dioxide
Scotmas Agriculture
water treatment . hygiene . environmental care
• Destroys proteins in cell
structure by oxidation –
ensuring no resistance can
develop
• Powerful enough to penetrate
exopolysaccharides in biofilm
where pathogens can harbour
and multiply.
• Destroys amoebae and
suppresses Oocysts such as
Crytosporidium and Gairdia
• Now widely used in a variety of
industries, including hospital
water treatment and laboratory
disinfection

16. Advantages of Chlorine Dioxide
Scotmas Agriculture
water treatment . hygiene . environmental care
• Delivery systems have been a
historic problem, preventing
wider use of chlorine dioxide
• Special attention has to be
paid to control of residual
levels, control of disinfection
by-products and effects of
increased water uptake on the
stock rations
• Scotmas have used our 25
year experience in the industry
to devise controlled treatment
programs for layers, breeders
and broilers at all stages of
development

18. Agricultural Dosing Systems
Scotmas Agriculture
water treatment . hygiene . environmental care
• Scotmas have designed and
developed a range of delivery
systems for our agricultural
biocides that can be installed
at minimum cost and
inconvenience
• Our dosing programs have
been designed to be
compatible with a range of
vaccination and vitamin
supplement treatments
currently in use
• Our systems offer 365 day
protection from harmful
bacteria and biofilms without
manual intervention

20. Expected Results
Scotmas Agriculture
water treatment . hygiene . environmental care
Improved production performance
(livability, FCR, reduction in secondary
infections), which alone will outweigh cost of
treatment
Removal of biofilm and scale which reduces pipe
and drinker maintenance. Reduces the need for
end of cycle water line sanitation.
Higher vaccination and antibiotic response due to
reduced background bacterial loading.
Compliance with customer audit standards, leading
to increased consumer confidence
