Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom, occupying the northern part of the island of Great Britain. Scotland shares borders with England to the south and is surrounded by seas. Scotland gained independence in 1314 after the Battle of Bannockburn but joined with England in 1707 to form the United Kingdom. Scotland has had its own parliament again since 1999 and will hold an independence referendum in 2014.
