3. MITCHELL FEIGENBAUM
Mitchell Feigenbaum is a pioneer in the science of
“chaos,” the mathematics of erratic dynamical sys-
tems and objects with unpredictable behavior and
attendant “fractal” geometry. Dr. Feigenbaum’s labo-
which seeks the understanding of such phenomena.
SUMMER ASH
Summer Ash is the Director of Outreach for the De-
partment of Astronomy. Her doctorate research was
on the evolution of radio galaxies and active galactic
nuclei (just a fancy phrase for supermassive black
holes).
STUART FIRESTEIN
Stuart Firestein is the former Chair of Columbia Univer-
sity’s Department of Biological Sciences where his col-
leagues and he study the vertebrate olfactory system,
possibly the best chemical detector on the face of the
planet. His laboratory seeks to answer that fundamen-
tal human question: How do I smell?
HELEN FISHER
Helen Fisher is a biological anthropologist and a mem-

and technology on modern culture.
THE OAKES TWINS
Ryan and Trevor Oakes are twin brothers and visu-
al artists who have been engaged in a conversation
about the nuances of perception since they were
children. Since graduating in 2004, they’ve continued
their dialogue through a body of jointly built art pieces
that address human vision, light, perception, and the
experience of space and depth in the particular way
that they have come to understand it.
GAVIN SCHMIDT
Gavin Schmidt is a climatologist, climate modeler,
and Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space
Studies (GISS) in New York. He has worked on the
variability of the ocean circulation and climate, utilizing
general circulation models.
DIANA REISS
Diana Reiss is a professor of psychology at Hunter
College. Her research has focused on understanding
cognition and communication in dolphins and other
cetaceans. She has done work in mirror self-recogni-
tion of such animals, as well as in elephants.
JÜRGEN SCHMIDHUBER
Jürgen Schmidhuber is a computer scientist and artist
