This conference, entitled “Genome Editing: The Next Frontier”, will be held in Singapore, February 4-7, 2018, and is jointly organized by Fondation IPSEN, AAAS/Science and AAAS/Science Translational Medicine, and the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology A*STAR Singapore. The meeting will cover a broad range of topics including natural bacterial immune mechanisms, the next generation of genome editing tools, applications of genome editing tools in scientific discovery, and therapeutic applications of genome editing.

On 27 November 2005, the Público newspaper presented as part of its main Sunday edition, the booklet "Career: scientist. Portraits of a generation on the move" .The work carried out by the Viver a Ciência team highlighted 14 young Portuguese scientists at the beginning of their career (up to 40 years old) and was distributed free of charge by the paper, to a circulation of 80,000.
The preface, written by Carlos Fiolhais, powerfully explains the concept of the book « in science, young people are an inexhaustable source of creativity». The introductory note, written by the VaC scientists responsible for the project, highlights the fact that the booklet features work of exceptional quality but that is little known by the public in general, work which impacts on our day to day lives and work that shows great promise, that generates great expectations for the future.
They are all presented, in this publication, in a language and a style that makes them accessible to the general public. As for the scientific areas involved, diversity and multidisciplinary approaches are key. We decided to show a range of scientific discoveries that stand out for being recent and made by Portuguese scientists, emcompassing areas such as Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
From "remote control" flies to the use of mathematics to help in the fight against infectious diseases, via an explanation of why Venus turns the "wrong" way, they are stories of discovery that distinguish science. Made in Paris, Washington, Aveiro, Braga or Boston. The themes range from the conservation of nature to the evolution of the universe and mechanisms of memory. The applications of the research of these 14 scientists allow, for example, the prevention of blockages in petrol pipelines in the sea bed or the explanation of why certain medication is effective against AIDS. The ‘worlds' that are unveiled range from the most elementary particles ‘surfing' plasma to chick embryos that tell us about their own development, via the secrets of cell division and the ocult genetic evolution in the patterns on butterfly wings.

Angel Nebreda of IRB Barcelona received a Proof of Concept grant from the European Research Council to investigate new breast cancer therapies based on p38 MAPK inhibitors using patient samples. IRB Barcelona hosted the 15th European Light Microscopy Initiative meeting, bringing together over 400 microscopy experts to discuss the latest developments in microscopy techniques.

The Scientist magazine and SciVee announced the winners of the first annual Scientist Video Awards. There were four winners divided into two categories: individual and institutional. The individual judges' winner was Tom McFadden for "Synaptic Cleft" and the institutional judges' winner was The Wellcome Trust for "Tree of Life". The individual audience winner was Marita Davison and Jennifer Moslemi for "Fencing Flamingos" and the institutional audience winner was Amgen for "Pioneering New Frontiers in Tumor Angiogenesis". The winning videos showcased a variety of scientific topics and styles and demonstrated that short videos can effectively communicate science.

This represents both continuity with past openness and a potential shift in how science is conducted. Open science may transform scientific practice through new tools and attitudes that facilitate global sharing of research. However, openness also presents challenges regarding privacy, complex issues, and influencing results that must be addressed.

Free and open access, transparent assessment and dissemination of research in a fast, shared, collaborative, participative and clear manner for all of society are some of the principles of Open Science. The recognition and adoption of open research practices is growing, including new policies that increase public access to scholarly literature and encourage openness of codes and data sharing for its reproduction. Among these initiatives which are reconfiguring scientific communication, preprints have been consolidating themselves as a promising space for free, open and transparent knowledge, streamlining the editorial process. Preprints are the first formal step in making the manuscripts publicly available before being approved by a journal.
The logics of publishing based on science guiding principles have always been in the decision-making power of the editor. From the choice of referees to the distribution of articles approved in publishing editions, the time management to publish keeping quality, periodicity and celerity regarding feedback on the output was always a challenge to editors. Moreover, this time management becomes an even greater challenge to the publishing process in Brazil, and in some parts of Latin America, whose journals’ management is mainly based on voluntary work. Given this scenario, initiatives that seek to make scientific communication faster and more transparent appear as solutions to the daily difficulties of scientific publishing, such as, for instance, preprints, continuous publication and open peer review.
In view of this new reconfiguration of the editorial process, this panel aims to discuss the panorama of fast and transparent scientific communication, seeking to share experiences that have been developed that respond to the editorial demands on the management of time and quality of the papers published in scientific journals and, particularly, to support the development of the SciELO Program preprints policy.

This document summarizes the key points of an article on the diversity and composition of bacteria in indoor environments. It finds that the bacterial communities found indoors are less diverse than outdoors, and that mechanically ventilated rooms contain less diverse communities than window ventilated rooms. Certain building attributes like ventilation source, airflow rates, humidity and temperature are correlated with the diversity and types of bacteria present. Rooms with lower airflow and humidity have higher abundances of potential human pathogens. The study suggests that building design and operation can manage the indoor microbiome and species that may colonize the human microbiome.

Bioanalysis Young Investigator Award 2013. Justo Giner Martinez-Sierra
This document summarizes the Bioanalysis Young Investigator Award that is held each year by Bioanalysis and Bioanalysis Zone to recognize promising early career researchers. This year had 18 nominees, the largest number yet. The winner will receive $1000, a journal subscription, open access for their next article, and travel assistance to accept the award at the European Bioanalysis Forum Symposium in November where they will present their work. Profiles of all nominees will be published and the editors will select five finalists for an online public vote to determine the winner.
Open Science - Paradigm Shift or Revival of Old Ideas?
Open science is both an old idea and a new paradigm. While openness has long been a principle of science, tools now enable unprecedented sharing of data and collaboration. This represents both continuity with past openness and a potential shift in how science is conducted. Open science may transform scientific practice through new tools and attitudes that facilitate global sharing of research. However, openness also presents challenges regarding privacy, complex issues, and influencing results that must be addressed.

Free and open access, transparent assessment and dissemination of research in a fast, shared, collaborative, participative and clear manner for all of society are some of the principles of Open Science. The recognition and adoption of open research practices is growing, including new policies that increase public access to scholarly literature and encourage openness of codes and data sharing for its reproduction. Among these initiatives which are reconfiguring scientific communication, preprints have been consolidating themselves as a promising space for free, open and transparent knowledge, streamlining the editorial process. Preprints are the first formal step in making the manuscripts publicly available before being approved by a journal.
The logics of publishing based on science guiding principles have always been in the decision-making power of the editor. From the choice of referees to the distribution of articles approved in publishing editions, the time management to publish keeping quality, periodicity and celerity regarding feedback on the output was always a challenge to editors. Moreover, this time management becomes an even greater challenge to the publishing process in Brazil, and in some parts of Latin America, whose journals’ management is mainly based on voluntary work. Given this scenario, initiatives that seek to make scientific communication faster and more transparent appear as solutions to the daily difficulties of scientific publishing, such as, for instance, preprints, continuous publication and open peer review.
In view of this new reconfiguration of the editorial process, this panel aims to discuss the panorama of fast and transparent scientific communication, seeking to share experiences that have been developed that respond to the editorial demands on the management of time and quality of the papers published in scientific journals and, particularly, to support the development of the SciELO Program preprints policy.

This document summarizes the key points of an article on the diversity and composition of bacteria in indoor environments. It finds that the bacterial communities found indoors are less diverse than outdoors, and that mechanically ventilated rooms contain less diverse communities than window ventilated rooms. Certain building attributes like ventilation source, airflow rates, humidity and temperature are correlated with the diversity and types of bacteria present. Rooms with lower airflow and humidity have higher abundances of potential human pathogens. The study suggests that building design and operation can manage the indoor microbiome and species that may colonize the human microbiome.

Emilio García-Sánchez is a professor at the Universidad Cardenal Herrera-CEU in Valencia, Spain who leads a multidisciplinary bioethics research group. The group's lines of research include analyzing the sociological and ethical treatment of human vulnerability, protecting human dignity throughout life, and threats to human nature from biotechnologies like enhancement. With over ten years of experience publishing and organizing conferences in bioethics, the group welcomes opportunities for international collaboration like research stays, shared doctoral supervision, and conferences on protecting vulnerable populations. It consists of professors from fields including bioethics, philosophy, biology, nursing and law.
