Key Vocabulary
Human Foetus (Pronounced: Fee-tus) Baby Childhood
Adolescence Reproduction Adulthood Old Age
Today we are taking a close look at the stages that
every human goes through during their life.
We call this: the human life cycle.
LO: to understand the human life cycle
Lifecycles: recap
Lifecycle noun
The series of changes in the life
of a living thing (from birth to
death)
All animals, including humans, go through these basic stages of life:
Birth Growth Reproduction Death
The Human Lifecyle
Foetus
There are six stages in the human lifecycle:
Baby Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Old Age
Let’s take a closer look at each stage…
Stage 1: Foetus
Foetus Baby Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Old Age
All humans begin their lives in
their mother’s womb.
During this stage, they are fully
dependent on their mother for
food and protection. They grow
inside the womb for 9 months.
Stage 2: Baby
Foetus Baby Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Old Age
A baby is born after spending 9
months in the womb.
This stage lasts for the first year
of a human’s life. It can breathe
on its own and its organs work
but it is still fully-dependent on
its parents for survival.
Stage 3: Childhood
Foetus Baby Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Old Age
Childhood lasts between the ages
of 1 and 10 (ish) so you guys are
just coming to the end of this
stage.
During this time, the child learns
to walk, talk and become more
self-sufficient (less reliant on
their parents). These skills
continue to develop during this
stage and they become more
social.
Stage 4: Adolescence
Foetus Baby Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Old Age
Adolescence takes place between the
ages of 12 and 18.
It is a crucial turning point as the
human body goes through many
changes which will ultimately see the
body preparing itself for reproduction.
Adolescents also become even more
independent from their parents.
Stage 5: Adulthood
Foetus Baby Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Old Age
This is the longest stage of the human
lifecycle.
During this stage humans are fully
developed and provide entirely for
themselves using the skills they learnt
during the first stages of their lifecycle.
It is during this stage that humans may
choose to have their own children.
Stage 6: Old Age
Foetus Baby Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Old Age
This is the last stage in the human
lifecycle.
During this stage the body starts to
deteriorate and humans may once
again become dependent on others
(usually their children or carers).
The Human Life Cycle
Foetus Baby Childhood Adolescence Adulthood Old Age
TASK 1: draw a diagram of the human lifecycle.
You will need to include:
• The names of all 6 stages
• A drawing to represent each stage
• At least 1 sentence explaining each stage
Lesson Review
TASK 2: Write a sentence or two to answer the following question:
DEPTH:
Add pictures or drawings of you and your family to your lifecycle
diagram. Can you work out which stage they all belong to?
Which stage do you think is the most
important of the human lifecycle and why?
