sizes. Learn about why crystals form, what
crystal lattice structure is, and what makes these
crystals glow.
Kaleidoscope making kit [7+]
Make up a 25cm long kaleidoscope whose object chamber is specially designed with a removable cover. Simply
change the different trinkets included and make a colour changing kaleidoscope, or a mystic glow kaleidoscope, or a
sparkling holographic kaleidoscope, or a snowflake kaleidoscope. You could also put in your favourite trinkets to create
your very own style kaleidoscopes. Lots of ideas included and the fun is unlimited. This is a fun science project for the
whole family. Contains 1 paper cone, 1 holographic foil, 1 set chamber with removable cover, 3 safety mirrors, 4 bags
of different trinkets (glow, holographic, colour and clear transparent), 3 colour filters, 1 eye piece cover, 1 card strip,
double adhesive tapes, detailed instructions with fun facts and ideas for making different kaleidoscopes.
A kaleidoscope is a tube of mirrors containing loose coloured beads, pebbles or
other small coloured objects. The viewer looks in one end and light enters the other
end, reflecting off the mirrors. Typically there are two rectangular lengthwise mir-
rors. Setting of the mirrors at 45° creates eight duplicate images of the objects, six
at 60°, and four at 90°. As the tube is rotated, the tumbling of the coloured objects
presents the viewer with varying colors and patterns. Any arbitrary pattern of ob-
jects shows up as a beautiful symmetric pattern because of the reflections in the
mirrors. A two-mirror model yields a pattern or patterns isolated against a solid
black background, while a three-mirror (closed triangle) model yields a pattern that
fills the entire field.
Kitchen Chemistry [7+]
Helps children develop an understanding of science with 40 fun and safe
experiments to cook up in the kitchen, following the step-by-step
instructions booklet. Includes wipe clean activity mat which becomes the
child's personalised laboratory. Contains 'Spot the hazards' kitchen
safety poster to colour and learn.
Supports the National Curriculum.
3. Create a Night Sky Projection Kit [8+]
Create your very own starry sky in your bedroom. Invite your friends and family for the
star show, they will be amazed. This kit contains projection domes of both Southern
and Northern Hemispheres night sky. Just punch small holes on them, assemble and
make projection with the lamp provided. Detailed instructions and with star charts of
both Hemispheres included. This is a fun science project for the whole family.
Enviro Battery [8+]
Learn the science behind electrical power. Use natural materials to power a light bulb, a watch and activate a music
chip! Create batteries from fruit juice, vegetables coins and much more. Everything is included except what you
choose as your battery power!
The enviro battery works by immersing a pair (or pairs) of connected zinc and copper plates into an aqueous
medium such as a potato, mud, water, or a piece of fruit. The zinc plate is the negative electrode; the copper plate is
the positive electrode. When the metals are immersed into the electrolyte, a chemical reaction takes place. The acid
in the electrolyte breaks down the atomic structure of the copper and zinc, causing individual electrons to be
released. Zinc is a more reactive metal than copper in this chemical process. It generates electrons faster than cop-
per in this chemical process. The excess electrons flow from the zinc plate to the copper plate. This flow of the elec-
trons from a reactive metal to a less reactive metal forms a small current which is strong enough to power a small
light bulb, a small watch or a sound chip.
Dynamo Torch [8+]
Turn a simple toy motor into a generator that converts hand motion into electrical energy and powers a light bulb.
No battery, no pollution, just amazement. The generator could be used as an awesome energy torch.
Animation Praxinoscope [8+]
Rebuild one of the world's first animation toys invented 170 years ago
and learn optical principles which laid the theoretical backbone of modern
animation and movies. Create your very own mini movies and invite your
friends to attend a unique animation show.
Feature! special light bulb allowing you to view the animation at night.
You will be amazed by the simulated impression of early movies. Con-
tains full set Praxinoscope with light bulb installed (assembly required), 6
ready-to-view animation movie discs and 6 blank discs for creating your
very own movies, and a set of detailed instructions with fun facts.
This scientific toy with animated images relies in retinal persistence to
make us believe we are seeing images in motion.
The praxinoscope was patented by the Frenchman Emile Reynaud in
1877, who was looking to overcome the deficiencies of the zoetrope,
which enjoyed enormous popularity at the time. His apparatus was the
first to eliminate the distorted view of the images in movement caused by
insufficient light passing through the small slots of the zoetrope. This im-
provement in the quality of the image resulted in immediate popularity for the praxinoscope.
The praxinoscope was an animation device, the successor to the zoetrope. It was invented in France in 1877 by Charles-
Émile Reynaud. Like the zoetrope, it used a strip of pictures placed around the inner surface of a spinning cylinder. The
praxinoscope improved on the zoetrope by replacing its narrow viewing slits with an inner circle of mirrors, placed so that
the reflections of the pictures appeared more or less stationary in position as the wheel turned. Someone looking in the
mirrors would therefore see a rapid succession of images producing the illusion of motion, with a brighter and less dis-
torted picture than the zoetrope offered.
