What do the Standards do School Facilities Outline how big and how many spaces for a certain enrolment level What is the fitout/inclusion in the spaces Design Outlines the general performance requirements of each technical component within all spaces of the school
What do the Standards do Specification Based on Nat Spec – clauses in the Spec Std relate to Dept of Education and Training specific requirements Many items are ‘performance specified’ A number of items are defined by manufacturer and product number A suite of drawings for ‘builder’s supplied items’ or DET specific designs (usually in response to a ‘situation’)
What do the Standards do They align with the Building Code of Australia (BCA) for a ‘Class 9 Building’ (Note: there are a number of instances where the SFS exceeds the requirements of the BCA eg balustrading and glazing) They reference or incorporate over 50 Australian Standards
What do they require Steel (metal roof sheeting) Heavier gauge than domestic building. Plus special finishes if near coast or industry Glazing (doors and windows) Laminated safety glass in all situations. What do they require Furniture As per School Furniture Contract Tap Ware/Toilet Suites/Bubblers Actual products specified down to product item number (most are DET designed) Paving Falls of 1:50 to minimise ponding (max 1:40) Bitumen preferred – no glare, non-slip Concrete – plain with broomed finish (if in sunlight coloured top to reduce/stop glare
COLAs Performance requirements outlined in the SFS Product/materials – refer to the Design and Specification Standards Some rules include: Games court – 2 metre over-run to posts No trip hazards or exposed bolts Not against classrooms – gloom and doom Avoid the ladder effect Treat acoustically
