School violence has been a growing problem over the past decade. The 1999 Columbine shooting drew national attention to the issue of school safety. While many schools have increased security measures like metal detectors, most schools cannot afford such measures. The essay argues that American public schools are not safe without greater security efforts to protect students from threats of violence, bullying, and weapons being brought to school. Reform is needed to address school safety comprehensively rather than just focusing on punishment.
