Removable prosthodontics replaces missing teeth with removable partial or full dentures. A partial denture replaces one or more teeth in the same arch, while a full denture replaces all teeth in one arch. The choice of removable prosthesis depends on factors like a patient's physical health, motivation, and the condition of their remaining teeth and oral tissues. The process of fabricating a partial or full denture involves multiple appointments including taking impressions and fittings to evaluate fit and function. Proper home care of removable dentures is important for maintaining oral health.

This document provides an introduction to removable prosthodontics, specifically complete dentures (CD). It defines a CD and lists its objectives of restoring esthetics, speech, mastication, and tissue health while providing patient satisfaction. A CD includes conventional, immediate, and overdenture designs. It has three surfaces - polished, fitting, and occlusal - and involves six visits for construction. Immediate dentures are fabricated immediately after tooth removal, while overdentures cover remaining natural teeth or implants. A single denture replaces teeth in one jaw.
The document describes the key laboratory procedures for fabricating a removable partial denture (RPD) in 8 steps:
1) Duplicating the stone cast and creating an investment cast
2) Waxing the RPD framework using preformed patterns or wrought wire
3) Spruing the waxed framework
4) Investing and burning out the sprued pattern
5) Casting the framework in metal using centrifugal force
6) Removing the casting from the investment
7) Finishing and polishing the framework, including electropolishing
8) Trying in the framework on the patient
It also explains that a work authorization delineates responsibilities and ensures quality control by providing instructions
This document discusses the importance of recording jaw relations when fabricating removable partial dentures (RPDs). There are several methods for recording jaw relations, including direct apposition of casts, interocclusal records with posterior teeth remaining, and using occlusion rims. Centric relation should be recorded for distal extension RPDs or when the opposing arch is edentulous, while centric occlusion is preferred when natural teeth can guide the mandible. Proper jaw relation and occlusion are necessary to distribute forces optimally and prevent damage to teeth or bone.
Dental plaque is a microbial biofilm that forms on teeth. It is composed of bacteria, salivary components, food debris and other substances. As plaque matures over time, initially harmless streptococci are replaced with more pathogenic gram-negative bacteria and anaerobes. Mature plaque near the gums can cause inflammation and is associated with conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis. Plaque is assessed visually using disclosing agents or tactilely with probes, and proper removal through brushing and flossing is important for oral health.
This document provides information on impression making for complete dentures. It begins with an introduction on impression making being an art that requires skill and knowledge of oral anatomy. It then covers the history, definitions, theories, objectives, related anatomy, materials and techniques for preliminary and final impressions. The key steps discussed are preliminary examination, selection of tray and material, making the preliminary impression, border molding, and making the final impression. The goals of impression making are to preserve ridges, provide support, retention, stability, and aesthetics.
This document provides an overview of ceramics used in fixed prosthodontics. It discusses various types of ceramics including glass ceramics, glass infiltrated mixtures, and polycrystalline ceramics. Examples mentioned include lithium disilicate, zirconia, and alumina. The document reviews clinical indications and uses of different ceramics, as well as case considerations, preparation designs, and causes of failure. An outline is provided of the topics to be covered in the presentation on ceramics in dental practice.

This document discusses concepts and techniques for complete denture impressions. It begins with definitions of impressions and complete denture impressions. It then reviews the history of impressions from the 18th century to present. Key anatomical landmarks are described for the maxilla and mandible, including supporting, relieving, and limiting structures. Basic requirements for impressions include anatomical knowledge, technique skills, material knowledge, and patient management. Steps and various impression techniques are also outlined.
Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of patients with missing or deficient teeth using substitutes. It includes fixed and removable prostheses. A fixed partial denture is a partial denture that is securely attached to abutment teeth, roots, or implants to replace one or more missing teeth. Successful treatment requires attention to patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, operative skills, and follow-up care.

Life in England 500 years ago involved limited education opportunities with boys beginning school at age 4 to be educated for work and girls taught household skills. Entertainment varied between social classes, with rich people enjoying music, games, and sports while poor people mostly worked in factories. Medicine was rudimentary, consisting of herbal remedies, and diseases were often believed to be caused by an imbalance of bodily fluids, as there was no national healthcare system and doctors' practices varied widely. Travel was also difficult, with pilgrimages being a popular form of long-distance journey but roads facing dangers from bandits, and mostly limited to aristocrats and nobles.

Early Christian communities established the first hospitals in Europe and Asia to care for travelers, abandoned children, and sick people. Over subsequent centuries, hospitals evolved from places that primarily provided shelter to institutions focused on treating acute medical cases. In the 19th century, hospitals began appointing social workers called "almoners" to investigate patients' financial and social circumstances. This led to the development of medical social work as a distinct profession aimed at addressing the complex psychosocial needs of patients and their families to minimize the impacts of illness and support overall well-being. Medical social work is now recognized as an essential part of comprehensive hospital care.

This document discusses the ideal role of a community health professional. It envisions a trained health worker who lives in the community they serve, knows community members by name, and treats patients like extended family. The document advocates for selecting health workers from within communities, providing 5-10 years of phased training while maintaining connections to universities and hospitals. This would allow health workers to influence research and stay up to date, while strengthening the bond between medical centers and rural populations through feedback. The goal is for community health professionals to fulfill the dream of being a family doctor who visits patients' homes and empathizes with their situations.

Life as a student in residential schoolChantal Lee
Residential schools were established by the Canadian government from 1620-1996 to assimilate Aboriginal students into European culture. Students endured poor conditions, including harsh discipline, physical and sexual abuse, malnutrition, and disease. They were forbidden from speaking their native languages and practicing their cultures. Many students never saw their families. Thousands of students died in the schools due to illness, malnutrition, accidents, and suicide. Survivors often suffer from PTSD and lost connections to their culture and families. Formal apologies have been made by churches and the Canadian government for the inhumane system.
This document provides an overview of forensic dentistry. It discusses the history and development of forensic dentistry, noting some key historical cases. Forensic dentistry involves using dental evidence and records in criminal investigations and identifying human remains. Teeth can provide crucial identifying information because they are very resistant to decomposition. Forensic dentists may use dental records, bite marks, teeth characteristics and other dental evidence to help identify individuals or determine details like age or habits. The document outlines some common forensic dental tools and techniques, and provides examples of criminal cases where dental evidence was important.
This document provides information about Bean Elementary School in Lubbock, Texas. It discusses the school's mission, demographics of the surrounding low-income neighborhood, and current facilitators and barriers to student and community wellness. The document proposes an after-school program called "Fueled" to address barriers by providing nutrition education and physical activities for students and families. Interviews with school staff revealed that generational poverty is a major challenge and that the Dream Center currently provides crucial support services to the community.
