In 2017-2018, the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library selected a digital collections management system in seven months by using practical project management, documentation, and communication techniques to setup workflows, balance schedules, and ensure that all stakeholders had a voice. Session attendees will learn how to take the pressure off of large projects by breaking them down into discrete phases based around producing documentation. Lessons learned will also be discussed, with pragmatic tips to avoid problems in future projects.

The Power of Cross-unit Data Sharing: Nontraditional Uses for ILLiad

This session will provide two examples of how ILLiad, an interlibrary loan software, was used to collect and share data with other units to improve workflows and services. At Austin Peay State University, ILLiad data was used to gain a holistic understanding of the information needs of various patron groups, which led to projects like purchasing digital access to resources requested by distance students, identifying collection gaps, purchasing titles repeatedly requested by students, and implementing a faculty buy-not-borrow policy. Similarly, ILLiad was used at Louisiana State University to report electronic resource access issues to the newly hired Electronic Resources Librarian. A year’s worth of data revealed the most common types of access issues impacting LSU’s electronic resources, training opportunities for ILL staff, and most significantly, the revelation that ILL staff and troubleshooters engage in many of the same procedures to carry out their work, prompting her to wonder if the intersection of ILL request processing and troubleshooting present an opportunity for restructuring. Time will be allotted for questions from audience members.

The Digital Preservation Task Force proposes a panel discussion wherein we take the opportunity to share updates about the task force’s work, and discuss recent developments in the field of Digital Preservation. The main focus of the session will be a discussion between the panelists with plenty of opportunity for those in attendance to ask questions and offer feedback. Panelists will include members of the Task Force and publisher representation.
Currently, the Task Force is working on documentation to be made available via the NASIG website for reference by librarians, publishers, third party preservation agencies, and other interested parties. In addition, the Task Force has plans to develop a survey to better understand how NASIG can serve its membership and the profession at large with regard to digital preservation initiatives. The Task Force is also seeking ways in which it can collaborate with other professional organizations to proactively ensure digital preservation of the scholarly record.
