The City of Promise initiative aims to improve educational and developmental outcomes for children and youth in three Charlottesville neighborhoods through a cradle-to-college-and-career continuum of support programs. It is modeled after the Harlem Children's Zone and serves around 1,000 residents across 25 city blocks. The initiative has three main goals: academic achievement, positive youth development, and healthy development. It implements various programs in schools and the community to achieve these goals such as afterschool STEAM programs, parent empowerment programs, pathway coaching, mentoring, and partnerships to support health and wellness.

5. Roots to Wings was the
initiative’s first official
partnership implementing
a parent education to
encourage healthy child
development and tools for
successful parenting
program that served 4
cohorts, including 26
parents and 47 children.

6. STEAM Afterschool Program
It is a drop-in afterschool
program for youth in grades
K-12 in the City of Promise
Community. STEAM is in
coordination with Burnley-
Moran Elementary School
and other partners and
includes a homework-help
and tutoring and emphasizes
a STEAM curriculum
(Science, Technology,
Engineering, Arts, and Math).

8. Pathway Coaching Program
Children and families who
are enrolled into Pathway
Coaching will be enrolled
by a coach and a GPS or
comprehensive game plan
will be developed to ensure
success of the family served.
