California Center for Sustainable Energy: PEV Benefits and Incentives

Topic: North Texas | Ozone in North Texas: Opportunities for Improvement
Kicking off the Topic: North Texas webinar series for June, Chris Klaus of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) discussed the state of North Texas air quality and what can be anticipated for 2015. Also, companies and organizations were presented with opportunities to participate in air quality efforts including the upcoming Clean Air Action Day on June 26.
The Dallas-Fort Worth region has been working to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s ozone standards since the early 1990’s. While air quality has improved, federal standards continue to get tougher and the region still faces many challenges. In order to continue making progress toward new ozone standards, leadership from the business community will continue to be essential to air quality improvements. The presentation will cover ideas that could be incorporated into daily business operations.
Chris Klaus has been on staff in the Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Dallas-Fort Worth area, since July 1994. He is a Senior Program Manager managing the department’s Air Quality Planning and Operations activities, which respond to federal air quality requirements and work towards reaching attainment of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
Chris received his Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1994, and his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2003.

CalHEAT overview and mission
CalHEAT is a state-funded research center focused on accelerating the development and adoption of efficient truck technologies. It performs research, testing, and demonstration projects to help commercialize technologies that reduce fuel use and emissions from medium and heavy-duty vehicles. CalHEAT works with industry partners and aims to develop a roadmap to guide research efforts towards meeting California's goals for reducing petroleum use and greenhouse gases from the trucking sector by 2020.
ORNL Sustainable Transportation
ORNL conducts research and public activities to support sustainable transportation and energy efficiency. This includes research on high efficiency engines, alternative fuels, emissions controls, and lightweight materials. A key activity is operating FuelEconomy.gov, a website launched in 1999 by DOE and EPA to provide consumers with fuel economy data and tips to help reduce petroleum use and emissions. ORNL also promotes sustainability on campus through initiatives like the Transportation Council and manages the laboratory fleet. The goal of ORNL's transportation research is to enable using less petroleum, reducing emissions, and meeting performance needs.
Priming the U.S. Grid for High-Powered Electric Vehicle Charging
There are growing infrastructure requirements needed to meet the demand for electric vehicles in the United States. The more infrastructure required for EVs, the more energy will be needed to power the charging stations for the EVs. Collaboration among stakeholders is key in the adoption of mass scale EV infrastructure in communities across the country. From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.
