Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Generating a custom Ruby SDK for your web service or Rails API using Smithyg2nightmarescribd
Have you ever wanted a Ruby client API to communicate with your web service? Smithy is a protocol-agnostic language for defining services and SDKs. Smithy Ruby is an implementation of Smithy that generates a Ruby SDK using a Smithy model. In this talk, we will explore Smithy and Smithy Ruby to learn how to generate custom feature-rich SDKs that can communicate with any web service, such as a Rails JSON API.
2. One day on the vast, beautiful mountainside, on a small island of animals, there was a monster
named Mr. Oink. He was a pig - well, part pig, part shark, and part serpent. He had the head of a pig, the
body of a shark, and the tail of a serpent. He loved cute stuffed animals and he also liked Christmas. All
the other animals teased him because he was a monster. Mr. Oink really wished to get off the island.
Only last night the pigs were saying he was hideous. It was time to escape!
3. Mr. Oink knew that a big bad troll guarded the boat, so no animal could leave. The ginormous troll
was so ugly, not gagging was nearly impossible. Eager to get off the island, he decided to reason with
the troll, which is hard to do. No, impossible. Well, maybe not for him. The troll was on the other side
of the island, so he decided to take a taxi. He saw the troll and cautiously slithered to him. "Um, Mister
Troll?" sputtered Mr. Oink. "Go away!" thundered the troll. Slithering back to to his house, the hopeless
Mr. Oink thought he'd be stuck on the island forever. "I need to think of something," he said to himself
once he got home. Looking around his small, old fashioned living room, he spotted a black suit and
thought, "That's it! I'll sneak by him and get out!"
4. The exhausted Mr. Oink stumbled into his soft, furry bed, and dozed off. The next morning, Mr. Oink
acted like he hadn't done anything, making sure he remembered to pretend to look sad and angry to
anyone (and this happened every day) who teased him or laughed at him. But, as you know, deep down
he felt happy and as though he was already free, yet some how he had a feeling that his plan wouldn't
work. Mr. Oink was tired, so he tried to go home, but he couldn't because he had a little fun pretending
that he was in sorrow. Eventually he left and slithered back to his house for some rest. He set his alarm
clock to 12:00, and he went into a deep slumber. "Riiinngg!" his alarm clock went off and sounded like a
police car was in his room. Since it went off, he stumbled out of bed to slip into his suit, and then he was
off into the cold, dark night. He woke up in the hospital, looking at the nurse, who looked very curious.
This is what happened: the troll found him, mostly because of the fact that he didn't sleep, and stepped
on him (which isn't pleasant) and broke most of his bones. Waking up made him remember something...
he was half shark!
5. Jumping into the deep, murky waters, Mr. Oink swam so fast it was almost certain he was going at
least 34 mph, though going this fast was hard and tiring. Forcing himself through it, it was important to
keep swimming. Since he was using his shark gills, if Mr. Oink stops swimming, he stops breathing.
The freezing waters chilled him. Never before had he ever needed to use gills, and he was definitely
not used to the freezing waters. Mr. Oink was so focused on finding land, that even though it was cold,
he didn't feel anything. Yet there was no land for miles around. He was sure that he was the loneliest
creature in the world, and so he kept swimming. At last he saw the sight he had so longed to see...
land! Mr. Oink was so excited, he swam so fast he bumped into the ground. At last - land!
6. The new land was filled with what he had hoped to see, other monsters, like a giant lizard and a
dragon. "A dragon," Mr. Oink thought, still awed by the mythical creature. The new island was the most
beautiful place he had ever seen in his life, and like all fairy tales, he thought he'd live happily ever
after. And so, the overjoyed Mr. Oink set off to find new friends, and he lived the rest of his life in the
paradise he had found.
