● A text is a large unit of
written language.
● A text is generally
considered as written
material, especially longer
pieces of writing as in a
book, a letter or a
newspaper.
● A group of ideas put
together to make a point or
one central idea.
What is text?
Example
‘Cause there we are again in the middle
of the night
We're dancing 'round the kitchen in the
refrigerator light…
Discourse
• Expression of ideas;
• Text with distinct features
and purpose;
• Formal and often lengthy
discussion of a topic where
concepts and insights are
arranged in an organized
and logical manner;
• Convey meanings, propel
actions and provoke
specific response.
Discourse came from the
Latin word “discursus” –
an argument
Fact for you!
• Journal Diary
• News Articles
• Anecdotes
• Procedures
• Critiques
• Opinion Paper
• Research Articles
Example of Discourse Purpose of Discourse
• To inform
• To persuade
• To entertain
Factors that affect the Discourse
Personal Experience Social Environment Culture
Text and Discourse
Text
Made up of
sentences having
the property of
grammatical
cohesion.
Discourse
Made up of
utterances having
the property of
coherence
Text as Connected Discourse
A text is a connected discourse,
which means that all ideas in
text must be related in the sense
that they would express only one
main idea, or that the text must
have unity by combining all
ideas to emphasize central idea.
Properties of a
Well-written
Text
02
Properties of a Well-written Text
• Organization
• Coherence and cohesion
• Appropriate Language Use
• Proper Mechanics
Organization
• Refers to the arrangement of ideas in a text.
• It said that ideas are well-developed when there is a
clear statement of purpose, position, facts, examples,
specific details, definitions, explanations, justifications, or
opposing viewpoints.
• It can be achieved when the ideas are logically and
accurately arranged.
If there is organization…
• Sentences are arranged in a logical manner, making them easily
understood by the reader.
• Connection of ideas at sentence level.
• In order for us to assure coherence and cohesion we need
to use transitional and cohesive devices.
Be assured of this. Most people do want to have a face-to-face.
However, they are afraid of what might happen.
• Sentences are arranged in a logical manner, using the signal devices:
• Time
• Sequence
• Space
• Illustration
• Comparison
• Contrast
• Cause and effect
• conclusion
The
President
said, “work,
work, work.”
She looks
beautiful in her
gown. Her
gorgeousness
is really evident
in that dress.
Mr. Duterte is
the 16th
President of the
Philippines. He
is from Davao
City.
A. Coherence and cohesion
1. Arrangement of details according to:
a. Chronological order
This morning was amazing. My alarm clock was set for
PM instead of AM, so I woke up really late. I went straight to the
bathroom to have a shower, then I immediately stormed out the
house and went directly to school.

b. Spatial order- paragraph are arranged according to
geographical location, such as left-to-right, up-to-down, etc.
Bill Gates’ house was superb. On the outside you can find
an Olympic size pool and a huge garden. On the inside, from the
bottom floor you can find a massive living and dining area.
Followed by the upper floor where you can find his collection of
Apple products since his day one of creating them.

to emphasize certain points depending on writers purpose. From

After looking at all the brochures and talking to several
salesmen, I decided to purchase and SLR camera. For several
years I had been dissatisfied with point-and-shoot camera. The
framing was imprecise and the focus was not always accurate. I
had planned a vacation to an area that promised many fabulous
photo opportunities, and I wanted to capture each one with
accuracy. But the most important reason I decided on the SLR
camera was the great versatility it offered.
A well-written has…
B. Language Use- appropriateness of word/ vocabulary usage.

• Too unsophisticated
• Too vague
