Salem, Massachusetts was one of the most significant seaports in early America and was the site of the infamous Salem Witch Trials in 1692-1693. Nathaniel Hawthorne, a famous American novelist, was born in Salem and drew inspiration from the Puritan history of New England. His most famous work, The Scarlet Letter, was published in 1850 and told the story of Hester Prynne, a woman punished for adultery in Puritan Boston. Hawthorne predominantly wrote short stories early in his career before publishing his romances, including The House of the Seven Gables and The Blithedale Romance, between 1850-1860.
