In the fifth session of the Nexii Webinar Series 2012, we featured M-CRIL Ratings. Micro-Credit Ratings International (M-CRIL) specialises in rating the performance of micro-finance institutions and social enterprises, among other activities. In this most recent webinar session, Sanjay Sinha, founder and managing director of M-CRIL, walked attendees through the methodology behind M-CRIL, highlighting key indicators, the rating process, and the benefits of using such a performance and impact measurement tool.
From conducting performance and impact ratings, M-CRIL has made notable findings regarding the potential and impact of microfinance institutions and social enterprises across the world. According to M-CRIL, over 100 million families have been positively impacted by microfinance institutions worldwide. In addition to this, M-CRIL noted that over $30 billion is available for investment in microfinance and impact enterprises. These are very exciting findings for impact investing!
If you would like to know more about M-CRIL and its ratings, we have made the webinar slides available below. You can also find out more by contacting M-CRIL directly at contact@m-cril.com

Audit reviews on all wholesale credit (i.e. corporate and investment banking) controls for the Africa region of Barclays Bank. The control environment
encompasses the credit lifecycle in its entirety. The responsibilities of this role entail an on-going review of the control environment through the lenses of both
an audit assurance as well as a continuous-monitoring approach through client visits and networking.
The duties of this role encompass:
(a) Delivering audit assurance through audit reports
(b) Continuous reviews on the control environment,
(c) Making recommendations to control weaknesses and their improvement (i.e. structural reform, system re-design, control embedment),
(d) Audit planning and scoping
(e) Project management from planning until reporting,
(f) Compilation of audit reports for the Chief Internal Auditor,
(g) Team audit planning on a half-yearly basis,
(h) Full compliance with the Barclays Audit Methodology.
Achievements:
In my short tenure in this role I have managed to identify twenty five control deficiencies that have contributed to risk reductions, cost improvements and major
changes to the overall risk management in the credit control environment, across the African continent. I recently performed a thorough end to end credit
assessment in Mauritius that has resulted in a major improvement to the bank’s key risk environment that comprises a corporate and investment banking book
with an estimated book value of US$20 billion.
Reason to consider Leaving:
I have always led teams and have shown excellent results in those roles, an opportunity to incorporate my wholesale credit knowledge and experience with
people-management responsibilities will be an incentive for me to consider leaving given its alignment to my growth and development.
CREDIT MANAGER (CORPORATE BANKING)
Company : Nedbank Corporate Limited.
Division : Corporate Banking.
Sub-Division : Credit
Job Family Grade : Management
Period : September 2012 – August 2013.
Responsibilities:
This role was the embodiment of credit lending to Nedbank’s large corporate clients. Credit granting included vanilla type facilities (i.e. overdrafts, term loans,
commercial property finance, accounts receivable and debtor book financing, rental discounting) as well as structured facilities to address specific client needs.
All credit applications included a thorough client investigation and analysis based on:
(a) Audited financial statements and management accounts,
(b) Pipeline reports,
(c) Due diligence reports,
(d) Onsite visits which included amongst others, stock evaluation, debtor confirmations, customer service management analysis,
(e) Projected cash flow statements,
(f) Sales contracts
(g) Printed media.
The role encompassed the end to end lending cycle from request to post-approval fulfilment and entailed detailed forecasting and client engagement to ensure
accurate risk assessments are performed. The structure and magnitude of deals necessitated committee level approval for each and every deal which encouraged
thoroughness as well as a rigorous interrogation of each and every deal being done. It was therefore imperative that as a credit manager, the role called for
exceptionally high people skills, resilience and innovation in line with refined technical knowledge. The role also demanded an exceptionally high accounting
knowledge due to the complexity of financial management that was affixed to the types of deals being done.
As part of my own responsibilities I was also tasked with the monthly compilation of management reports on the team’s performance and assessment trends.
Achievements:
In this role, I assisted the Credit Director when the team was highly short-staffed in bringing down overdue reviews and ensuring throughput on ten new deals. I
helped compile the monthly management information packs and was pivotal in the approval of a ZAR1 billion deal for a major airline in South Africa as well as
two other Domestic Medium Term Loan Programmes totalling ZAR1.5 billion for another key stakeholder in country. I was also part of a team that helped in
the Domestic Note Programme for a very large road improvement project in country.
Reasons for Leaving:
An opportunity arose for me to start a business venture but I subsequently was attracted to Barclays Internal Auditing which offered new opportunities in the
Credit Risk environment.
