God found grace in Noah when he assessed that humanity had become fully devoted to evil. God established a covenant with Noah to save him and his family by having them enter the ark. God also made a covenant with all living beings to never destroy the earth by flood again, shown by the rainbow. Though God judged the antediluvian world, the remnant who accepted God's covenant through Noah were spared, just as a remnant will accept God's covenant before the final destruction by fire.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Lesson 3 for April 17, 2021

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord”
(Genesis 6:8).
2. The antediluvian world:
Only evil thoughts
Noah: A just man
God’s covenants:
A covenant with Noah
A covenant with all living beings
The Remnant
Humanity progressively
went to rack and ruin after
sin entered our world.
Most humans decided to
devote themselves
entirely to sin, although a
minority (a remnant)
chose to obey and praise
God.
God intervened in a drastic way when evil topped out. But
He found a way to give us a second chance in His grace.
3. ONLY EVIL THOUGHTS
“Then the Lord saw that the
wickedness of man was great in
the earth, and that every intent of
the thoughts of his heart was only
evil continually.” (Genesis 6:5)
After sin entered
Earth, humans quickly
went from being “very
good” to being
“corrupted.”

2nd generation
Genesis 4:8
7th generation

Murder, open

God
Polygamy, lack
of respect for
human life
God’s servants mingle with
sinners, unlimited
violence
4. NOAH: A JUST MAN
“Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations.
Noah walked with God.” (Genesis 6:9)
Sin leads to ruin and death. That’s why God
hates sin. He wants to eradicate it, but He also
wants to save the sinners. That’s what the
Covenant is about.
When God assessed the situation of the world,
He observed that most humans had reached
such a high level of wickedness and rebellion
that they were no longer hearing the voice of
the Holy Spirit.
However, all was not lost. There were still
some people who were listening to God and
serving Him. Noah was one of them. He was a
just and perfect person before God.
Nevertheless, his justice was not
enough to save him from God’s
sentence. God established His covenant
with Noah by grace (Genesis 6:8).
5. “It was through Noah’s consistent faith and
works combined that condemned the world. He
not only preached the present truth appropriate
for that time, but he acted every sermon. Had he
never lifted his voice in warning, his works, his
holy character among the corrupt and ungodly
would have been condemning sermons to the
unbelieving and dissolute of that age. He bore
himself with a Christlike patience and meekness
under the provoking insults, taunts, and
mockery. His voice was often heard in prayer to
God for His power and help that he might do all
the commandments of God. This was a
condemning power to the unbelieving.”
E.G.W. (This Day With God, August 14)
6. A COVENANT
WITH NOAH
“But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go
into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives
with you.” (Genesis 6:18)
God helped Noah like someone throws a life
preserver to a shipwrecked sailor. He made a
covenant with him: if you obey me, build an ark, and
enter it, then I’ll save you and your family.
God longs to see those shipwrecked by sin being saved. Therefore He offers us
His Covenant, so we can enter the ark of salvation. An ark in the shape of a
cross.
This is pure grace. It was God’s initiative to save Noah
(“my” covenant) although he had done nothing to
deserve it. God didn’t benefit from that covenant.
However, Noah would have lost everything if he had
broken it.
7. A COVENANT WITH
ALL LIVING BEINGS
“I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall
be for the sign of the covenant between
Me and the earth.” (Genesis 9:13)
Humans must accept some conditions in order to be a part of the Eternal Covenant. We
must willingly accept God’s covenant.
However, God’s covenant with “every living creature” in Genesis 9:12 is different. This
covenant goes beyond humanity, it covers all animate beings. There are no conditions to
become part of this covenant. God just promised to never send a Flood again.
God announced this promise on a large
scale. He used rain (a new
phenomenon for Noah and his family)
and light refraction to draw beautiful
colorful arches.
This is a unique and unbreakable
covenant. Its sign will last as long as
Earth does.
8. THE REMNANT “He destroyed all living things which
were on the face of the ground […]
Only Noah and those who were with
him in the ark remained alive.”
(Genesis 7:23)
The verb “to remain” is closely
related to the concept of
“remnant” (something that is
left) [e.g. see Ezra 9:8, Isaiah
4:3, Jeremiah 42:2, Ezekiel
14:22; Zechariah 9:7; Romans
11:5].
God is judging the world again. His Covenant is still available to
all willing to accept it. There is still a “little flock”, a faithful
remnant. They are not better than others, they just love God
and accept His grace. Are you part of this remnant?
God judged the antediluvian world and condemned them
to destruction for their wickedness. But He made a
covenant with the remnant, with those willing to accept
God and His “preacher of righteousness” (2P. 2:5).
9. “Once again, before the great destruction
of the world by fire, there is granted a
period of test and trial. Men are given
opportunity to show whether or not they
will be loyal to God […]
As God’s witnesses, we have a message to
bear to all the world. The Lord has many
children who have never heard the truth
for this time. God’s servants must give
them the final warning.” E.G.W. (The Upward Look, March 15)
