3. Rimsky-Korsakov
Secret dreaming
What I secretly dream about in the quiet night,
what I think about every hour in the light of day
is a mystery to all.
And even to you, my poem, my friend, my delight,
I will not reveal the secrets of my soul.
But you will tell me whose voice I hear
in the silence of the night,
whose face I find everywhere,
whose eyes shine, whose name I keep repeating.
колоннады за ними открылись;
от подушки тихонько руками;
Dream of a summer night
Last night, I couldn’t fall asleep,
I rose and opened the window
The silent night tormented me
with its intoxicating flowers
Suddenly, the bushes below rustled,
the curtain burst open
and a young man flew in,
bright-faced like moonshine.
The doors of my room opened
and corridors were revealed
with pyramids of roses
as light gleamed from alabaster vases.
The mysterious visitor approached my bed.
He said to me with a quiet smile,
“Why did you dive into the pillows
so quickly like a frightened fish?
See me, I am a god, a god of visions and dreams,
I am the secret friend of the shy maiden.
For the first time, my queen,
I bring to you the bliss of heaven.”
As he spoke, he gently lifted
my head from the pillow
and passionately kissed my cheek,
and sought my lips with his lips.
I became weak under his breath, my hands
surrendered from my breast and, in my ears,
rang the words: “You are mine! You are mine!”…
Like the distant music of a harp…
Hours pass… I open my eyes…
The dawn pours over me…
I am alone... I shiver… My hair is wildly loose…
I don’t know what has happened to me…
4. Редеет облаков (Op 42 no 3)
Люблю твой слабый свет в небесной вышине;
The chain of clouds
The chain of clouds is dispersing in the sky.
O evening star, star of sorrow on high.
Your silvery light beams across the distant,
withered plains,
the quiet bay and the dark mountains.
I love your tiny glow in the heavenly sky
awakening my thoughts with your light.
I remember you, o star, how you appeared
above the peaceful earth where all was delightful.
Where poplar valleys rise above the fields,
Where tender myrtles and cypress slumber
to the gentle lapping of the midday waves.
There is no time in these mountains
for deep, heartfelt thoughts.
Over the sea, my lazy thoughts drift
as night’s shadow falls on the cabins
and the young girl in the mist searches,
and the lover’s name is called.
Tchaikovsky
Отчего побледнела (Op 6 no 5)
Why are the roses so pale?
Why are the roses so pale?
O speak, my love, why?
Why, in the green grass,
are the blue violets mute?
Why, with such a lamenting voice,
does the lark sing in the sky?
Why, from the balsam weed,
does the scent of wilting blossoms rise?
Why does the sun shine down on the meadow
so coldly and sorrowfully?
Why is the earth so grey
and desolate like a grave?
Why am I so ill and numb?
My dearest love, speak,
O speak, my heart's most beloved,
why have you abandoned me?
5. Ночи безумные (Op 60 no 6)
Wild nights, sleepless nights
Wild nights, sleepless nights
Incoherent words, tired eyes.
Nights alight with the final flame
of dead autumn flowers.
Although the merciless hand of time
showed me your faults,
Still in yearning memory, I fly to you
seeking impossible answers.
With your suggestive whisper, you drown out the
noise of the unbearable day
In the still of the night you chase away my sleep...
Sleepless nights, wild nights!
Whether day dawns
Whether day dawns or in the stillness of night,
Whether in a dream or awake,
Everywhere I go, I am filled entirely
With one thought alone:
Only of you!
Gone is the grief that has tortured me,
Love reigns supreme in my heart...
Courage, hope, and eternal devotion,
All that is good, united in my soul,
All that my soul holds dear or sacred,
It is all because of you!
Whether my days pass in joy or sadness,
Whether my life ends soon or late,
I know that, though death overtake me,
All my hope, feeling, song, and strength,
All are for you!
6. Dvořák
Gypsy Songs
Má píseň zas mi láskou zní
Má píseň zas mi láskou zní,
když starý den umírá;
a chudý mech kdy na šat svůj
si tajně perle sbíra.
Má píseň v kraj tak toužně zní,
když světem noha bloudí;
jen rodné pusty dálinou
zpěv volně z ňader proudí.
Má píseň hlučně láskou zní,
když bouře běží plání;
když těším se, že bídy prost
dlí bratr v umírání.
My song resounds
My song resounds with love
when the old day is dying;
it is sowing shadows
and reaping pearls.
My song resonates with longing
while my feet roam distant lands.
My homeland is in the distant wilderness -
my song stirs with pride.
My song resounds with love
while unforeseen storms threaten.
I rejoice in the freedom that I no longer have
a part in the death of a brother.
How my triangle is ringing!
Ah! How my triangle ringing!
For a gypsy song -- when death is near --
the death of a gypsy brings an end
to song, dance, love and all concerns!
A les je tichý kolem kol
A les je tichý kolem kol,
jen srdce mír ten ruší,
a černý kouř, jenž spěchá v dol,
mé slze v lících, mé slze suší.
Však nemusí jich usušit,
necht' v jiné tváře bije.
Kdo v smutku může zazpívat,
ten nezhynul, ten žije, ten žije!
Silent woods
The forest is quiet all around;
only my heartache disturbs the peace.
Like black smoke billowing,
tears flow down and dry upon my cheeks.
They need not dry --
let other cheeks feel them!
The one who can sing in sorrow
will not die, but lives and lives on.
Když mne stará matka
Když mne stará matka zpívat učívala,
podivno, že často, často slzívala.
A ted' také pláčem snědé líce mučím,
když cigánské děti hrát a zpívat učím!
Songs my mother taught me
When my mother taught me to sing,
Strange that she often had tears in her eyes.
And now I also weep,
when I teach my gypsy children to play and sing.
7. Struna naladěna
Struna naladěna, hochu, toč se v kole,
dnes, snad dnes převysoko,
zejtra, zejtra, zejtra zase dole!
Pozejtří u Nilu za posvátným stolem;
struna již, struna naladěna, hochu,
toč, hochu, toč se kolem!
Tune your fiddle, gypsy!
The string is taut -- young man turn, spin, twirl!
Reach the heights today,
tomorrow down again
And after tomorrow, at the Holy Table of the Nile.
The taut string is stretched –
turn young man -- turn and twirl!
Široké rukávy
Široké rukávy a široké gatě
volnější cigánu nežli dolman v zlatě.
Dolman a to zlato bujná prsa svírá;
pod ním volná píseň násilně umírá.
A kdo raduješ se, tvá kdy píseň v květě,
přej si, aby zašlo zlato v celém světě!
Flowing sleeves
Flowing sleeves and broad trousers give
more freedom than a robe of gold.
The robe of gold constricts the chest
and the song within the body dies.
He who is happy, his song blooms with the desire
that the whole world would lose its taste for gold.
Dejte klec jestřábu
Dejte klec jestřábu ze zlata ryzého;
nezmění on za ni hnízda trněného.
Komoni bujnému, jenž se pustou žene,
zřídka kdy připnete uzdy a třemene.
A tak i cigánu příroda cos dala:
k volnosti ho věčným poutem,
k volnosti ho upoutala.
Eternal freedom
Given a cage to live in, made of pure gold,
the Gypsy would exchange it
for the freedom of a nest of thorns.
Just as a wild horse rushes to the wasteland,
unbridled and not reined in,
so too the gypsy nature
has been given eternal freedom!
Rachmaninov
Сирень (Op 21 no 5)
Я пойду свежим утром дышать;
И то счастье в сирени живёт;
Lilacs
In the morning, at daybreak,
over the dewy grass,
I will go to breathe the crisp dawn;
and in the fragrant shade,
where the lilac crowds,
I will go to seek my happiness...
In life, only one happiness
was destined for me to discover,
and that happiness lives in the lilacs;
in the green boughs,
in the fragrant blooms,
my unworthy happiness blossoms...
Ты песен Грузии печальной;
Тебя увидев, забываю;
Do not sing, my beauty
Do not sing, my beauty,
Your sad songs of Georgia to me;
They remind me
Of another life and distant shore.
Your cruel melodies remind me
Of the steppe, the night
and the moonlit features
of a sad, distant maiden!
I forget that sweet and fateful apparition
When you appear;
but when you sing,
I picture that image afresh.
Spring waters
The fields are still covered with white snow.
But the streams are tumbling announcing the
spring,
Running and awakening the sleepy shore,
Running and glittering.
They are calling out to every corner:
"Spring is coming, spring is coming!
We are the messengers of youthful spring,
She has sent us.
Spring is coming, spring is coming!
And the quiet, warm May days
Follow her, happily crowded
Into the bright dancing circle."
