Notes
Boundaries
The neighborhood under consideration is the Memorial super
neighborhood. The boundaries are determined by geography.
“The area is is bounded by Buffalo Bayou to the south, Barker
Reservoir to the west, the Katy Freeway (Interstate 10) to the
north, and the Memorial Villages (Spring Valley Village, Piney
Point Village, Bunker Hill Village, Hedwig Village, Hilshire
Village and Hunters Creek Village), a contiguous group of
independent municipalities, to the east” (Mulvihill,
2006).Housing
The houses are a bit old, but there are some that have been built
recently. The condition of the houses is fair. The type of
housing is single family. Most of the houses are occupied. A
5. few were spotted to be vacant. From the housing, most of the
people are doing white collar jobs. Signs of Decay
The area is well kept. This means that the condition is good.
There is no garbage thrown around. Certain areas are having
garbage bins. Each and every house has a parking space with
either two or one and the cars are in good condition. It seems
they are always driven. Parks and Recreational Areas
There is one recreational area. The recreational area is divided
into two parts. There is one part that is meant for children and
the other part for adults. The children part is equipped with
playing materials while the other part for adults has seats where
people can sit or relax. Transportation
The area is a fairly travelled area. It is well supplied with
public transport. There is both the train and bus. A number of
people are using public transport. This is because most of the
private cars are left in the parking lots. Most people are using
public transport because it is easily available. Economics
No factories are located in this area. Most of the things that are
evident in the neighborhood are houses and shops. Schools
There are a total of 7 schools in the area. Two of these schools
are institution of higher learning, 3 are high schools, and 2 are
elementary schools. These learning institutions have got good
reputation. They are known to provide better services to
learners.Religion
It seems most of the residents of the area are Christians. This is
because all of the churches that have been observed are
Christian churches. Among some of the churches seen are
Catholic church, Anglican church, Orthodox church, and
Redeemed Gospel. These churches are big in size. They must be
having large number of followers. General
6. There is no evidence of gang activity in this area. There are a
few billboards. Most of the billboards are located near the
center, which is busy. The signs that are seen are the ones that
are showing direction of various areas. This neighborhood is
fairly cool. There are not many activities taking place. The
place is diversely occupied. This is because there are White,
Black Americans, Indians, and Hispanics among others.
Environmental Health Factors
There is something in this neighborhood that is negative. There
are many fast food stores in the areas. These fast food stores are
closely located. Most of these stores are selling things, such as
burgers and fries among others. This type of food is not
considered to be healthy. The other negative thing about this
area is that there are very few exercising facilities. Most of the
people in the neighborhood do not take the idea of physical
exercise seriously. General Resident Health Observations
There is no general positive health behavior evident in the area.
The residents of the area are inactive physically. As earlier
stated there is facility for physical exercise. Most of them send
their free time indoor. It is as if they like to isolate themselves.
The negative health behavior that is seen in the area is the lack
of physical activity and the idea of spending much time indoor.
Community Health Issues
Based on my observation, the health issue that I expect to be
prevalent in the area is obesity. Obesity relates to having too
much body fat. People are considered to obese when they have
excess adipose tissue. Most of the people in the area are having
a Body Mass Index (BMI) ranging between 25 and 29.9,
meaning they are overweight while others have BMI above 30,
which means that they are obese.Services
There are the protective services in the area. Both the Memorial
Village police and fire departments are located in this area. This
7. protective service is fully functional and it is operating as it
expected. Three social centers are in the area (The Forum at
Memorial Woods, Brookdale Memorial City, and Brookdale
Memorial Oaks). There is the Memorial health care service in
the area. Community Needs
The problem in this community is that people do not consider so
much things relating to nutrition and healthy lifestyle.
Community Strengths
There is a large space to set the physical centers and facilities
that are needed in the neighborhood.
Community Crisis Response
There is a well established health care facility in the area that
has the ability of dealing with the problem that is facing the
residents. Also, there are a number of organizations that have
the ability to create awareness with regards to the matter.
There is no obstacle present in the area that has the ability to
hinder the provision of health care services.
Subjective Feeling
I was comfortable being in the area. These people in the area
were friendly and welcoming. Yes, this would be an area I
would like to live and work.
