Company Introduction
From the first Starbucks Café that opened in 1971, Starbucks has been “around the block” a time or two. They have had their share of obstacles to overcome from soaring coffee prices in the 1980’s when they were first started trying to expand, fierce competition, operational challenges and difficult business environments especially in international countries like Egypt and Israel, numerous labor disputes and a tumultuous economy. Navigating these obstacles, Starbucks has been significantly successful and maintains an outstanding reputation (Cameron, 2008).
Starbucks has become the number one coffee retailer of the world. It is also the largest coffeehouse in the world with more than eighteen thousand coffee shops in 60 countries and opens on average, two stores per day (Farfan, 2014). Starbucks success has been accomplished with unconventional methods. For example, Starbucks does not use advertisement on billboards or on commercials. Instead their success is based on building enduring relationships as well as creating a “third place”. This third place is a place in-between home and work. People want to go there because it is convenient, inviting, familiar, safe, comfortable and unhurried. With thousands of stores and over a million of customers, they still focus on “one customer, one partner, one coffee at a time” (starbucks, 2014).
Starbucks has gone from being around the block to being down the block. It is interesting to take a look to see how they got here and the people that have navigated their success.
Howard Schultz – Biography & Introduction
Starbucks’s current CEO, Howard Schultz, has been with the company since 1982 and has held various roles within the organization (Leadership Team, 2013). Before joining Starbucks, he worked for several high profile companies. He eventually became the general manager for a Swedish coffee drip manufacture by the name of Hammarplast and was responsible for their U.S. operations (Coffee King, 2010). He formed a personal interest in Starbucks, who at the time was still a small company; he was particularly curious “as to why it ordered so many plastic cone filters” from his company (Minchom, 2013). He first joined the company as director of marketing and soon after took an eye opening trip to Italy where he noticed the commonality of the coffee bars and their role as meeting places and their influence on the local culture (Coffee King, 2010). He relayed his findings to the owners and began trying to influence the direction of the company towards this model. After several unsuccessful years of doing so, he left the organization to open his own company that filled this desired role within society. After the success of his ...

Something big is going on in business today. More and more companies have decided to radically change their performance appraisal process.
Last week at our research conference we spoke with Adobe, Juniper, Kelly Services, and a variety of other companies who have decided to do away with traditional performance ratings and completely change the annual appraisal process.
Our research shows that this is a strong and positive trend.
Why the process must change.
Why do companies have annual reviews in the first place? Primarily they are an artifact from traditional top-down companies where we had to "weed out" the bottom performers every year. By forcing managers to rate people once per year we can have annual talent reviews and decide who gets more money, who to promote, and who to let go.
Coupled with the performance rating is the "potential" rating, which tries to capture an individual's potential to move up two levels in the organization (the traditional definition).
This approach is based on a philosophy that "we cant totally trust managers" so we're going to force them to fit people into these rating scales. And in many companies (around 20%) there are forced distributions.
The well publicized problems with this process abound. These include:
· Employees need and want regular feedback (daily, weekly), so a once-a-year review is not only too late but it's often a surprise.
· Managers cannot typically "judge" an entire year of work from an individual, so the annual review is awkward and uncomfortable for both manager and employee.
· The manager-employee link is not 1:1 like it used to be - we usually have many peers and managers we work with during the year, so one person cannot adequately rate you without lots of peer input.
· While some employees are a poor fit and likely are poor performers, these issues should be addressed immediately, not once per year.
· People are inspired and motivated by positive, constructive feedback - and the "appraisal" process almost always works against this.
· The most important part of an appraisal is the "development planning" conversation - what can one do to improve performance and engagement - and this is often left to a small box on the review form.
Of course companies are very nervous about eliminating this process because:
· We need a fair and validated way to distribute compensation increases (don't we?)
· We need a record of low performance when we let someone go
· We need to capture performance data in an employee's profile for future promotion and other talent reviews, development plans, and career migration
· We need a way to make sure managers are doing their jobs well.
Well I've probably discussed these issues with 100+ companies over the last five years and our research shows more and ...

Starbucks
As an American company and coffee shop franchise, Starbucks was founded in 1971, Seattle, Washington in 1971. With well over 15,000 outlets globally, the company has been considered as the world’s leading coffee vendor with the majority of the outlets being located in North America (“Company Information”, 2018). As of 2014, the company was estimated to be having a market value of close to $100 Billion. However, this could not have been possible without globalization; globalization has allowed the company to expand beyond the boundaries of the American Nation and influence the economies of other countries. It has also allowed various political powers to interact thus promoting cooperation and finally it has been able to tap into economies that have raised the value of the brand such as that of China and Europe (“Company Information”, 2018). In 2003, Starbucks began its expansion to foreign countries exploiting its potential and thus promoted their economies through the “Starbucks Effect.” This was the emergence of various coffee shops competing with the franchise in selling coffee (Kang & Namkung, 2017). The internet of things can be regarded as one of the most influential aspects that have allowed Starbucks to grow and dominate most markets globally. The company is aggressive in implementing change and this is inclusive of their machines. The company always installs the latest in machinery that allows the outlets to operate at maximum efficiency. Moreover, technology has allowed the franchise to have better interaction with its clients through online tracking of consumer preference. This tracking allows the company to understand what the client expects of the company and makes the necessary changes (Kang & Namkung, 2017). Finally, the company relies on online platforms for the employment of their staff as conventional means are not only expensive but extremely time-consuming.
As stated earlier, the “Starbucks effect” has been influential in the development of various economies through competition. Starbucks as a franchise has created a competitive environment in various markets that has resulted in the company being innovative in its marketing strategies (Kang & Namkung, 2017). This pressure to remain at the top can allow the company to generate above-average returns. Moreover, the brand is recognized by clients globally, this is the only advantage the company has considering that many locals may have other preferences towards other coffee vendors. In the Industrial Organization model, the company already qualifies as being attractive as its management and operation strategies are simple thus giving it room for more modifications to be applied. Moreover, the company applies the strategy of economies of scale whereby, due to its vast size it retails its products at a low and affordable price. This makes the company attractive ...

Real Business
It can be difficult for a business to improve how it operates from inside the organization. Sometimes, an outside perspective is needed. The large discount retail store you work for wants to improve its in-store restaurant management team.
Your Role
Companies like Target and Walmart often work with outside consultants—people who are not employees of the company but who are hired on a contract basis to help with a specific project. As a Leadership Consultant, you’ve been hired by a large discount retail company to help the company improve its leadership structure and approach to management.
WHAT IS A LEADERSHIP CONSULTANT
A leadership consultant is a person called in to a company, be it a large corporation or a small business, to evaluate how it operates and make recommendations for improvement. Leadership consultants are typically hired when a business is struggling and needs to make changes in order to remain profitable. Such consultants are often highly educated in the field of business and have experience in managerial roles.
INSTRUCTIONS
Step1 Organizationl Structure
Take a look at the Organization Chart provided by the company.
Based on your knowledge of hierarchies, would you say that this team has tall structure or flat structure? Please explain your answer.
Step 2: Human Resources
The company would like to improve the culture of its team and the quality of its work. Its leadership has provided you with a Process Chart detailing how it currently applies Human Resources best practices.
What step of the Human Resources Cycle is missing? Please explain why it is important to include this part of the process.
Note: You should complete Step 3 after reading the material in Week 9.
STEP 3: Leadership Style
You have been asked to help improve the leadership style of the team leader in order to meet the team’s performance goals. The team leader has given you a description of what is most comfortable in terms of leading others.
Identify this leader’s style of leadership, and list two benefits and two drawbacks to that style as it relates to the performance of the team.
LEARNING TO LEAD
As we learned in this week’s Strayer Talk, the vision and mission of a business are essential to every employee’s understanding of what the whole business is trying to achieve. Making sure everyone is on the same page is essential to the success of the business.
Mission and Vision
One of the most important things to understand in business is why you are doing what you’re doing. If you have a purpose you believe in, it’s easier to get up in the morning and get right to work. Mission and vision statements get right to the heart of purpose.

Task 1: Entrepreneurs are fundamental part of business success in today’s society. Discuss using real world examples of successful business entrepreneurs to illustrate your points.
An entrepreneur is a person who identifies a business idea and nurtures it into a business venture with an aim of making profits. Entrepreneurs get business ideas from magazines, hobbies, interests, vocational training, research, events and experiences. Not everyone can be an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are risk takers. This is because they come up with business ideas and start a business not knowing whether it will make a profit or not. Entrepreneurs do not give up as others give up, meaning they are persistent. They are passionate about their ideas and business ventures and always have a vision for it. Shane and Baron (2007) argue that entrepreneurs know what they want and know where they want to see their company at. Entrepreneurs are also goal oriented and more often than not, they have goals for profit making, business and sales growth. Brown (2010) also adds that good entrepreneurs are good in communication. They should be able to pass and receive communication. They are also flexible; in that they can adapt to change.
There are many successful entrepreneurs in the world including the founders of Google, Microsoft, fashion lines like Versace and Dolce and Gabana, Apple Inc., Facebook and many others. I will discuss Google, founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page in 1997. Eric Schmidt is also considered a founder of Google but he was an employee before being named the Chairman of the board of directors of Google in 2000. The Sergey and Larry met in school while doing their PhDs at Stanford University. Google deals with internet related activities. It is the world’s largest search engine. The company has also made softwares and applications that are used on phones by people.
Both founders have, since the beginning of Google, been involved in the running of Google. They have been in management of Google as well as in the creation of new products. This is what good entrepreneurs do. They do not abandon their businesses even when they are big. They had a vision for Google when it was just a start up. Their vision was to organize the world’s information in such a way that it easily accessible universally. They have managed to do this and more. The two founders as well as Eric Schmidt were passionate about technology in their school years. What has made them successful is taking small experimental steps according to Peter Sims as written by Robert (2011). Through the time when Google was a small idea, they never gave up on it. Today they have acquired many other busines.

Change in Leaders
One of the major reasons why organizations are unable to adapt to the fast-paced, changing environments of today is the lack of effective change leadership. Leaders who are successful in guiding their organizations through change are typically those who:
· Embrace change in the environment as opportunities on which to capitalize.
· Are vision artists—they can paint a picture of the future that is vibrant and clear to all
· Have the ability to communicate to all levels of the organizations the values and attitudes that will promote change and adaptability.
· Accept mistakes and the learned lessons they provide.
· Are comfortable working in a world of uncertainty.
In order to understand how to successfully lead change, it is essential to understand the types and process of change. Nahavandi (2012) proposed five different types of change.
Type of change
Description
Planned
Planned change occurs when leaders respond to a specific problem or pressure with a conscious effort.
Unplanned
Unplanned change occurs without an intention to address a problem. It is random or sudden.
Evolutionary
Evolutionary change does not occur all at once. It is a gradual process.
Convergent
This type of change, while evolutionary, is a result of specific actions that leaders take.
Revolutionary or frame breaking
This type of change is typically rapid and dramatic.
Leaders play a key role in ensuring organizational change is successful. Leaders must ensure they create open and supportive cultures within organizations that encourage followers to be open to new ideas. Leaders must be both optimistic and supportive in their approach. Successful change leaders, according to Nahavandi (2012) focus on providing examples of positive change and its positive impact to encourage followers to adopt change, rather than pushing change by providing information and knowledge.

Learn to Overcome Resistance
The cycle of change often goes through several stages including denial, resistance, exploration, and commitment on the part of followers. In other words, just as we can count on change, we can count on resistance to change. Change usually involves some type of loss and an accompanying fear of the unknown. Therefore, resistance is not only inevitable, it is natural and understandable. When employees are amenable to change, it is easy for leaders to garner their support. However, how do leaders work through resistance to change?
Ivancevich, Konopaske, and Matteson (2011) provided several helpful strategies for dealing with resistance to change. First, people need a reason to change. Second, having as many people as possible (from all levels of the organization) involved in planning, implementing, and managing the change will increase the likelihood of success. Third, communication abo ...

This week we had to determine one of our methods for our research. I am conducting
interviews with multiple folks and will need to compile some general statistical
information, including financial information (which should be readily accessible, but
could make my process more interesting if there is reluctance). All research contains
some level of risk, and interviews are no exception to that. My main concern is
participant bias, and the risk of folks not being entirely honest about some things,
particularly subjective questions ("how do you feel about...", "why did you/the church..."),
and maybe pandering to the research project in some capacity. What steps will you take
to safeguard your data and ensure it is as pure as possible? How will you "test" the
data? Are there other risks associated with data collection that I'm not considering?
I think this Barna study presents some interesting results that are worth considering as
we prepare to conduct our own research. There are some numbers here that are useful
on a global scale, although they may not speak to our congregations with any

Starbucks’ Market Analysis

Introduction
The success of any organization is based on how well it will be able to align its internal and external operations. Various factors impact the process of the organizations, and thus, it's the role of the organization management to align these factors with organization key objectives (Shaburishvili, 2017). In this case, the study will analyze the market and industrial factors that affect the operation of the Starbucks operation. In this study, the main focus will be laid in the analysis of the emerging that that affects its operation; market and industrial factors and also its strength and weaknesses.
Critical environments factors that affect Starbucks operation
Numerous factors affect the business operation, and these factors play a significant role in determining the performance of the organization. In this case, the study will analyze two factors – technology and globalization. The research will focus on investigating how these two factors impacts Starbuck's operation and performance.
Globalization
The increase in globalization and International corporations affects how the business operates. Globalization affects Starbucks in two main ways ...
“The fact is, culture eats strategy for lunch. You can have a good strategy in place, but if you don’t have the culture and the enabling systems that allow you to successfully implement that strategy, the culture of the organization will defeat the strategy.” Richard Clark, CEO of Merck (2005 – 2010)
In a study conducted by Bain Consulting in 2008, 91% of the 1200 senior executives at global companies agreed that “culture is as important as strategy for business success”. It further revealed that 81% of executives agreed that “a company without a winning culture was doomed to mediocrity.” In a more recent study by Booz and Company in 2013 , 96% of the 2200 respondents agreed that “culture change is needed in their organisation” while 51% agree “that their culture needs a major overhaul”.
These are startling numbers. If organisational culture is so important, why is it not one of the top items on the agenda?
In the second of this 6 part Change Management series, we outlined the importance of communicating your change and actively engaging your stakeholders.
In this article, we discuss the importance of designing and building a culture that supports your vision.
Eastern European countries appear to have become dependent on Ru.docxjoellemurphey
Eastern European countries appear to have become dependent on Russian oil originally due to the country being a reliable supplier to the European countries (Bradshaw, 2014, p. 76). Though the countries were allies with the United States, they were trying to become less dependent on the Middle East and saw that Russia was a reliable source. Much of this reliance was due to the “iron curtain” as well as the fact that many of the Eastern European countries were part of the Soviet Union in some way or affiliated with them.
It appears that much of the reason as to why these countries reached energy accords with Russia is due to the convenience. There was “limited access to storage and alternative sources of gas supply” (Bradshaw, 2014, p. 77). This pushed these countries to depend more on Russia, which appeared to be an easier access to gas supplies. Another reason might have been due to fear as the Kremlin punished Ukraine for voting for an anti-Moscow government (Bradshaw, 2015, p. 77). This action shows that many of these countries may have reached these accords due to the pressure and encouragement of the Soviet Government. In the 1980’s the dependence of European countries on Russian gas resources was 50-60%. In the 1970’s, many of the Eastern European countries also became reliant on Russia due to a greater demand of oil and gas. The surrounding countries that were providing resources were not able to keep up with the demand and thus these countries sought to get their sources from Russia. It also helped that Russia’s prices appeared to be lower than that of the world market (Bradshaw, 2014, p. 87-88). Due to the price of oil and gas and the availability, Eastern European countries were able to grow and build in gas import and its infrastructure, thus in turn causing it to be dependent on Russia.

Based on your considered review of this module’s readings as well as your reflection upon the first three modules, evaluate the questions below.
In retrospect it seems obvious, but exactly how and why did Eastern European countries come to depend on Russian oil and natural gas after World War II?
Why did the Western Europeans reach energy accords with the Russians in the 1970s and early 1980s, building large-scale natural gas import infrastructures and increasing their dependence on Russian gas?

There are some numbers here that are useful
on a global scale, although they may not speak to our congregations with any
specificity.

Starbucks’ Market Analysis

March 1, 2020

Early scholarly and philosophical manuscripts were in Greek. However.docxjoellemurphey
Early scholarly and philosophical manuscripts were in Greek. However, by the 5th century CE – and onward – language was mainly spread by conquests, trades, religious affiliations, technological advancements or entertainment. (Gascoigne, 2001). For example, as the geographic territory under Roman control grew, the use of Latin as a common language also spread. In areas under Roman control, Latin was the spoken and written language of the courts and commerce, as well as the language of the Christian church. As the Roman Empire expanded, Latin served as a common language that allowed for people of diverse linguistic backgrounds to be able to communicate.
Onward and by the early 14th century, the trend toward the use of vernacular language had spread throughout most of Europe. As monarchies throughout the region began to consolidate, the use of vernacular languages contributed to an increasing nationalism, or feeling of pride in one’s own nation, and in this case among people of similar linguistic backgrounds. People began to feel more connected to local leaders than they did to influences from afar. These sociopolitical shifts, along with the development of moveable type (the printing press), helped to ensure the success of the vernacular languages during the Renaissance.
Assignment:
The goal of this assignment is to research and report on the origins of vernacular language, and its spread while also providing evidence of Latin’s influence on all Western languages.
Choose one native language spoken in Europe, discuss the origins of the vernacular language and describe how the language spread.
As a whole, in what ways has Latin influenced Western language development?
Prepare a 2-page essay (not including cover page and works cited page) answering the questions stated above in APA format.

Early Innovations and Their Impact Today Wilbur and Orville Wrig.docxjoellemurphey
Early Innovations and Their Impact Today
Wilbur and Orville Wright's innovative spirit allowed them to take their place in history. Their inventions have changed the way people live around the world. At the turn of the century, an explosion in technological achievements occurred. The same kind of energy that went into advances in aviation went into the development of automobiles, telephones, televisions, and immunizations to prevent diseases. These and other innovations and achievements continue to have an enormous impact on human life.
In this week's Discussion, you will analyze two technological innovations/achievements of the late 19th/early 20th century and describe the impact they have on life today.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review Chapter 2 (pp.10–30) from this week's Learning Resources focusing on technological innovations and achievements around the globe.
Identify two significant technological innovations/achievements (such as the telephone, television, automobiles, and vaccinations) from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Consider the ways in which these technologies made an impact on society at the turn of the century.
Reflect on how these technologies continue to impact your life today.
Support your assertions by making at least 2 references, in proper APA format, to your course readings.
With these thoughts in mind:
Post by Day 3 a 2- to 3-paragraph analysis where you do the following:
Identify two significant technological innovations/achievements from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Describe, in your opinion, why you believe your choices were significant and created global impacts during that time period.
Explain how these two particular innovations/achievements impact the way you live today.

Early Constitutional Controversies
In 1788, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, who had both played active roles at the Constitutional Convention, worked together to write
The Federalist Papers
, a series of articles originally published in New York newspapers to convince readers to back the ratification of the Constitution. Constitutional scholars often refer to these papers to gain an appreciation of the “original intention” of the Framers, how those men expected the federal government to operate under the Constitution, and the powers they sought to grant or deny the federal government. By the early 1790s, however, Hamilton and Madison had divided over basic constitutional questions such as whether or not the federal government could charter a national bank. The American electorate, which had ratified the Constitution, had split on the issue as well, dividing into rival Federalist and Republican parties.
For this assignment, explore
one
significant constitutional controversy, from the first two decades of the United States under the Constitution (1789 to 1821). Topics to consider include:
The incorporation of the Bank of the United States
Debt assumption
The Jay Treaty
The Alien and Sedition Acts
The Election of 1800
John Marshall’s use of judicial review
The Louisiana Purchase
The trial of Aaron Burr

Early childhood teachers need to stay connected to what is occurring.docxjoellemurphey
Early childhood teachers need to stay connected to what is occurring in the community outside the classroom politically and economically because these factors will influence their classroom. Items of recent debate include social and emotional development, as well as technology in the early childhood classrooms.
For this assignment, take on the role of an early childhood teacher. The principal of your school has placed you on a committee to create a 12-15 slide digital presentation to inform families about current trends in early childhood education. Explain the trends and discuss whether they are developmentally appropriate for young children. In addition, include a description of the effect this trend has on student outcomes. The presentation should discuss early childhood trends and influences on the early childhood classroom in the following areas:
Political (legislative and regulatory)
Economic

Earlier this semester, you participated in a class discussion about .docxjoellemurphey
Earlier this semester, you participated in a class discussion about the character of Bath de Chaucer's wife. You are aware of the complexity of her as a resourceful, cunning, open and ambitious woman. For this essay, I would like you to write a comparison / contrast essay in which you discuss the Wife of Bath as you compare or contrast one or more of these three well-known modern American women: Beyoncé Lil 'Kim, and / or Lady Gaga.
Think beyond and below cliches and perceptions. The comparison should not be disrespectful to these modern iconic women. Obviously, times have changed, and I am in no way suggesting that these modern women share all or even some of the qualities of the Wife of Bath, aside from her drive for independence, sovereignty, and success.
When developing the comparisons and contrasts of it, you should use AT LEAST THREE SOURCES to gather information and knowledge to support the claims and interpretations of it. These sources should be cited in the text and on a works cited page using a precise MLA documentation style.
You will write one essay of 500 - 600 words for this paper . This essay must be formatted in MLA Paper form.
Here is the reading about The character of Bath de Chaucer’s life

UNIT 3. LESSON 1 - Elements of Comparison and/or Contrast Essays
INTRODUCTION
In this lesson, we will focus on:
A. Methods of Organization
B. Organizational Patterns
C. Unity and Coherence
We use comparison and contrast essays to help us better understand (1) the similarities, (2) the
differences, and/or (3) the similarities and the differences between, or among, two or more things or
ideas.
These essays can help us make sense of the world around us and make better decisions about our
actions. They also can change or strengthen our opinions. In other words, they can help us to think
critically about a subject.
A. Methods of Organization
There are three Methods of Organization for Comparison and/or Contrast Essays:
• The Comparison Essay
• The Contrast Essay
• The Comparison and Contrast Essay
The comparison essay discusses how two things are alike; it compares or
discusses similarities.
Think about Thesis Statement A:
Thesis Statement A: The two major political parties, the Republican and the Democratic
Parties, are similar in their intention to protect the country, the people, and their own interests.
You can look at this thesis statement in the following way:

The thesis of the comparison essay includes:
• the topic (two topics to compare) = the Republican and Democratic parties
• the controlling idea (take a position) = are similar in their intention to protect
• the branches (points or categories) = the country, the people, and their own interests
Note: Comparisons can be less interesting than contrasts unless you write a comparison essay
when you know that the points to compare are interesting, unusual or unexpected.
The contrast essay discusses how two things are not similar; it contrasts or
discusses differences. The contrast essay presents a totally different point of view.
The thesis of the contrast essay also includes:
• the topic (two topics to contrast)
• the controlling idea (take a position)
• the branches (points or categories)
Thesis Statement B: The two major political parties, the Republican and the Democratic
Parties, are different in the way they protect the country, the people, and their own interests.
The comparison and contrast essay discusses how two things are similar and also different,
it compares and contrasts two points in one essay.
The thesis of the comparison and contrast essay also includes:

Each year on or around June 15, communities and municipalities around the world plan activities and programs to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day set aside to spread awareness of the abuse of the elderly (Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse & Neglect, 2013). The abuse of older adults is a growing concern and statistics suggest that the number of elders experiencing abuse is an alarmingly high number. Research suggests that close to half the people diagnosed with dementia experience some form of abuse (Cooper, C., Selwood, A., Blanchard, M., Walker, Z., Blizard, R., & Livingston, G., 2009; Wiglesworth, A., Mosqueda, L., Mulnard, R., Liao, S., Gibbs, L., & Fitzgerald, W., 2010, as cited on http://www.ncea.aoa.gov/Library/Data/index.aspx). Elder abuse takes on many forms and can include physical, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse. The legendary American actor, Mickey Rooney, spoke to the United States Senate, describing his own experiences of pain and neglect at the hands of his stepson, asking legislators to take seriously the abuse of the elderly.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Company Introduction
From the first Starbucks Café that opened in 1971, Starbucks
has been “around the block” a time or two. They have had their
share of obstacles to overcome from soaring coffee prices in the
1980’s when they were first started trying to expand, fierce
competition, operational challenges and difficult business
environments especially in international countries like Egypt
and Israel, numerous labor disputes and a tumultuous
economy. Navigating these obstacles, Starbucks has been
significantly successful and maintains an outstanding reputation
(Cameron, 2008).
Starbucks has become the number one coffee retailer of the
world. It is also the largest coffeehouse in the world with more
2. than eighteen thousand coffee shops in 60 countries and opens
on average, two stores per day (Farfan, 2014). Starbucks
success has been accomplished with unconventional
methods. For example, Starbucks does not use advertisement on
billboards or on commercials. Instead their success is based on
building enduring relationships as well as creating a “third
place”. This third place is a place in-between home and
work. People want to go there because it is convenient, inviting,
familiar, safe, comfortable and unhurried. With thousands of
stores and over a million of customers, they still focus on “one
customer, one partner, one coffee at a time” (starbucks, 2014).
Starbucks has gone from being around the block to being down
the block. It is interesting to take a look to see how they got
here and the people that have navigated their success.
Howard Schultz – Biography & Introduction
Starbucks’s current CEO, Howard Schultz, has been with the
company since 1982 and has held various roles within the
organization (Leadership Team, 2013). Before joining
Starbucks, he worked for several high profile companies. He
eventually became the general manager for a Swedish coffee
drip manufacture by the name of Hammarplast and was
responsible for their U.S. operations (Coffee King, 2010). He
formed a personal interest in Starbucks, who at the time was
still a small company; he was particularly curious “as to why it
ordered so many plastic cone filters” from his company
(Minchom, 2013). He first joined the company as director of
marketing and soon after took an eye opening trip to Italy where
he noticed the commonality of the coffee bars and their role as
meeting places and their influence on the local culture (Coffee
King, 2010). He relayed his findings to the owners and began
trying to influence the direction of the company towards this
model. After several unsuccessful years of doing so, he left the
organization to open his own company that filled this desired
role within society. After the success of his own company and
the desire of the Starbucks ownership to pursue other
endeavors, Schultz purchased Starbucks for 3.8 million dollars
3. (Coffee King, 2010). The continued success of Starbucks has
helped make Mr. Schultz the 287th richest man in America, with
an estimated net worth of $2 billion dollars, and placed him at
#273 on the Forbes 400 list (Howard Schultz, 2014).
Management Style
Howard Schultz is the self-effacing chairman and CEO of
Starbucks. He is the mastermind of the astonishing growth of
Starbucks. He brought the coffeehouse culture of Italy to United
States. Being a maverick marketer he transformed the little four
store chain into the leading retailer of coffee in United States.
The management style of Howard Shultz is Employee based.
From his beginning at Starbucks, he has made a radical change
on how the company dealt with the employees. He believed that
friendly and efficient services by the employees would boost
sales. He instituted training programs to improve the employees
into being knowledgeable and to be employees who enjoy
working. He also provided the employees with stock-options
and comprehensive health insurance (Howard Schultz, 2014).
This attracted talent and created a trusting relationship with the
employees. The love for employees has always guided the
management style of Shultz. Despite outside pressures during
the company’s worst crisis to end the employee’s health care
benefits and the stock-options he did not sacrifice the
company’s value for financial performance and he eventually
reconciled the two. It is not common for CEO’s to have such
strong management principles and implement them against all
odds with much conviction like Howard Shultz.
Howard Shultz, unlike other leaders he is able to balance
being assertive, decisive and approachably real. This has made
him different from other iconic leaders and anyone would like
to have coffee with him. He is open and he shares his story
willingly. Shultz is forthright about his story that gives other an
ample opportunity to see his struggles. He also does not fear
creating something new of a company. He is a leader who
balances profit making and a benevolent employer. This made
him incorporate revolutionary concepts that other people vied as
4. financially unwise. This included the comprehensive health
insurance for their employees. Shultz also accepts failure, takes
the accountability and he keeps learning (Leadership Team,
2013). He is quick at owning up his missteps. As a leader,
Shultz also uses his influence to spread the idea of social
conscience by corporations to the employees and the world. His
activism made him number one business person of the year in
the fortunes list of 2011. Shultz understands that he should
inspire others. He is referred to as a self-enhancing
Managers today must have knowledge in almost all fields
including marketing, data analysis, finance, and accounting.
They are operating in a more competitive environment with less
time between one decision and the next. Companies are also
operating globally, which means each decision carries great
significance. Fortunately, they have more data than managers
had two decades ago. The expansive knowledge that managers
are expected to have today is supposed to help them make sense
of the information provided for making decisions (Yang, 2007).
Another significant change in management practice has been the
move to see organizations as systems whereby inputs undergo
processing to become outputs. This has led to greater
collaboration between departments within organizations to save
costs and improve quality. Starbucks for instance has improved
the relationship with its suppliers, with a view of making them
part of the value chain. Suppliers are informed of the
expectations of customers and are therefore able to adjust their
supplies to suit the needs of customers (Yang, 2007). The
company is also moving to produce its own coffee to create
independence from suppliers.
Lastly, the interviewee noted that managers at the company
today are concerned about how customers view the company.
With technology, customers are now more powerful and can air
their views about the company quite easily. As such, the
company uses social sites and its website to answer customers’
questions and address their concerns (Yang, 2007).
Leadership Style
5. Leadership is one of the major four functions of management.
Anyone can have the title of being a leader or a manager, but
not everyone can demonstrate it effectively. A leader is put into
place to help develop and maintain the standards and core
values of a company. They are to lead by example, quality,
excellence and perseverance with the goal to achieve the highest
success as possible. Starbucks is a company that has over
18,000 stores in 62 countries. This company demonstrates
servant leadership and goes beyond the needs of its customers
to the needs of the community. (Starbucks Leadership Style,
2013).
The Starbucks Foundation awarded nearly 100 Youth
Leadership grants to young aspiring teens by investing and
developing their skills to become extraordinary leaders. The
senior executive, Howard Behar, has always been a firm
believer in establishing the Starbucks culture, which expresses
the importance of "people over profits." He has coached over
hundreds of leaders and revealed ten principles that help guides
his leadership. The C.E.O himself, Howard Schultz, actually
received the 2013 Kellogg Award for Distinguished Leadership.
This demonstrates the trickle-down effect from the executive to
the employees how meaningful and serious leadership is taken
within the company.
Personal Interview:
I located a personal, 26-minute interview with the C.E.O
himself that touched on a variety of different subjects such as
organizational structure, ethical sourcing, CSR, leadership, and
ethic. In this interview by Karen Davila, he was asked to give
five tips on how a person could become a successful
entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are usually innovative leaders who
are not afraid to take risks. They feel they have something to
"offer" that maybe unique from the average. His five tips were:
1. Dream and then dream bigger
2. Things cost and take longer than expected so you must raise
money
3. Surround yourself with people who are like-minded
6. 4. Share your success
5. You will need luck
He was also asked what was one his biggest fears? Schultz
stated that failure was one of his biggest fears. He also
mentioned the lack of leadership as a concern in the industry.
When Starbucks took a fall when he stepped down, he came
back and reminded his workers of the tradition that Starbucks
was all about. Mr. Schultz also stated in another interview that,
"Leadership is not always having the answers, but leadership is
staying truthful and authentic.”
