Haircuts Business Environment Analysis
Introduction
The aim of every business is to make profits and gain competitive advantage over similar businesses in the market. This sentiment is shared by Myra Morningstar, who heads the UMUC Haircuts, and intends on improving her operations through the introduction of technology that will provide a solution to her scheduling problems. This paper includes an analysis of Porter’s Five Forces, how the analysis supports Myra’s strategy for competitive advantage, and the business process for improvement through the use of technology.
Five forces analysis
As stated by Dobbs (2012), the five forces consist of buyer power, supplier power, threat of substitute products or services, threat of new entrants, and rivalry among existing competitors. The effects of the forces on the business are described below.
FORCE
EXPLANATION
(Minimum 2 good sentences)
IMPACT (POSITIVE, NEGATIVE, or NEUTRAL)
AFFECT STRATEGY? (YES/NO)
BUYER POWER
It refers to the ease in which customers can affect the firm’s operations. It is quite high, as the buyers can make the firm to change its strategy, such as the cost leadership strategy that is being currently pursued.
Negative
Yes
SUPPLIER POWER
It refers to the ease in which suppliers can affect the firm’s operations. It is low as there are many substitutes for inputs.
Neutral
No
THREAT OF SUBSTITUTE PRODUCTS OR SERVICES
It refers to the ease in which customers can switch to substitute services provided by similar businesses. It is high as customers can easily switch to the hair cuttery, the spa, and the manicurist offering her services at home.
Negative
Yes
THREAT OF NEW ENTRANTS
It is high as it is easy for other businesses to offer similar services. This is due to the fact that the initial capital required is low, as depicted by the opening of the manicure business at home.
Negative
Yes
RIVALRY AMONG EXISTING COMPETITORS
It refers to the number and capability of competitors. It is quite high as the business’ competitors are offering quality services, and they are all operating within a small area, therefore competing for a small number of customers.
Negative
Yes
Justification of the cost leadership strategy
Myra has selected to implement the cost leadership strategy so as to enhance her business’ competitive strategy. According to (Kaliappen & Hilman, 2013), providing services at lower prices than those offered by competitors provides competitive advantage as the business attracts cost-conscious customers. The Porter’s buyer power identified the impact of buyers on the business as being negative. As such, the company should adopt the cost reduction strategy so as to attract more buyers, which will lead to customer satisfa.

The vision of the retail company is to be the best and most dominant retailer for the customers and for the staff members. The mission of the company can be seen to help people save their money so that they can live better. The company’s business strategy obeys cost leadership which states that they have to present low prices. Walmart’s just-in-time philosophy ensures that deliveries are made in time.Evaluation of the key elements of Walmart’s operational efficiency with its operations strategy and the tasks that do not align with the operations strategy
Walmart Inc. is an example of a retail company that utilizes operational efficiency while delivering products to the customers (Banker, Mashruwala, & Tripathy, 2014). It also adheres to its business strategy which follows the “low prices for all” initiative while maintaining high quality products for the people. The company has an online type of system that customers can use to get access to products so they can order and then have the products delivered to their preferred destination.
For groceries, Walmart uses the “same day initiative” to deliver products to their accustomed customers. The same day delivery services are referred to as Walmart to go. They also use a system of carrier referred to as The FedEx Corp which makes deliveries directly from the stores.
Apart from online deliveries, they allow buying products online with the option of picking the package up from the store and buying online then shipping to the store. They also allow making purchases directly from the stores within the United States.
Some of the tasks that are not in line with Walmart’s operation strategy are profit margins and their business model. The profit margins in Walmart’s case is considered to be thin which results from Walmart’s use cost leadership which dictates low prices for all. Overview of Business Environment Analysis for UMUC Haircuts
UMUC Haircuts has been in business since 1995 and has seen an increase in competition from a variety of competitors, as described in the Case Study. With the news that a Hair Cuttery is likely to open only five miles away, Myra, the owner of UMUC Haircuts, is concerned and has begun analyzing her situation and what could be done to remain competitive in this changing environment. She has recognized that scheduling her employees and her customers is causing her problems, and she thinks she should focus on that first, as it is fundamental to her business. Myra also believes that there must be a technology solution that could help her run her salon, but she has no idea where to start.
You are a Systems Analyst, and Myra has asked you to help her with determining how she can improve her business. Myra has requested, specifically, that youverify and provide added support to her own analysis that has resulted in the identification of a Strategy for Competitive Advantage and a Business Process for Improvement. This will be the basis for defining business and systems requirements for an IT solution. This Strategy and IT
Solution
will help to bring UMUC Haircuts into the 21st century and taking advantage of current technology. You will analyze her business environment using Porter's Five Forces Analysis. Then, you will use the results of that analysis to explain how it supports Myra’sStrategy for Competitive Advantage, and the business process that she selected for improvement through the use of technology.
It is important to note that a business owner has many areas where improvements can be made, such as: staff, building facility, supplier agreements, advertising, etc. There are also many possible solutions that could improve the business strategy and processes. Since time and costs are involved, the owner should address basic problems first in choosing the Strategy and which processes to improve. (Consider a lemonade stand ...

Original article from the Flevy business blog can be found here:
http://flevy.com/blog/deconstruct-and-innovate-your-business-model/
The business model is at the core of any company’s corporate strategy. It defines how the company creates, delivers, and captures value.
Most tech startups fail because they lack a viable business model. Even for enterprises with established business models, they often need to revisit and innovate on their business models.
To understand the essence of a successful business model, first, let’s look at its 4 core components:
• Customer Value Proposition,
• Profit Formula,
• Key Resources, and
• Key Processes.
Customer Value Proposition
A successful company helps its customers get a “job” done. Doing the “job”—this is the “value” the business is delivering for its customer. For instance, Google helps customers with the job of finding information online. McDonalds helps customers with the job of feeding a greasy appetite quickly and cheaply. Flevy helps customers with the job of finding business documents they need for work.
High customer value proposition is correlated with
• Importance of the job to the customer;
• Low customer satisfaction with alternative options in the market; and
• Higher quality (or lower price) of your product relative to alternative options.
Profit Formula
It’s great to offer customers great value, but, as a business, the economics still need to work in your favor. We need to make money! This is the profit formula.
The profit formula is the blueprint that defines how the company creates value for itself, while providing value for the customer. The profit formula consists of numerous economic components, including:
• Revenue model
• Cost structure
• Margin model
• Asset turnover and velocity
Michael Porter's Five Forces analysis is a critical tool for evaluating the competitive landscape and underlying structure of an industry, aiding in effective strategy formulation and risk management. By examining factors like the level of rivalry, barriers to entry, and the power dynamics with suppliers and buyers, businesses can make informed decisions on resource allocation and market positioning. The framework also serves as a valuable guide for investors to assess industry attractiveness and long-term profitability. Overall, this analysis is indispensable for achieving a sustainable competitive advantage and informed strategic planning.

Most Useful Assessment Phase For Walmart’s Competitive Advantage
Strategic planning can be referred to as an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue a certain strategy (Bryson, 2018). Strategic planners, who involve many parties, best execute this strategic planning and research sources in their analysis of the company and its relationship to the environment in which it competes. For retail giants like Walmart, strategic planning is a process/cycle involving inputs, activities, outputs and outcomes. The cycle should provide inputs for strategic thinking, which will guide the actual strategy formation. The end result should be a diagnosis of the environment and competitive situation, guiding Walmart on what should be accomplished, and key initiatives or action plans for achievements. Porter (1980) explained that formulation of competitive strategy includes consideration of four key elements: Company strengths and weaknesses; Intrinsic values of the key implementers; Industry opportunities and threats, and; Broader societal expectations.
As the largest retailer in the world (Dyer, Godfrey, Jensen, & Bryce, 2016)), Walmart in its current state of business would be better off focusing on the outputs more than the other phases of strategic planning. This phase is preoccupied with documenting and communicating the company’s strategy and how it should be implemented, sometimes referred to as the strategic plan. Walmart’s strategy should include a diagnosis of the competitive situation, a guiding policy for achieving the company goals, and specific action plans to be implemented. Walmart may use a variety of methods of measuring and monitoring progress towards the objectives and measures established, such as a balanced scorecard or strategy map. As part of the goal setting activity, Walmart may also want to robustly plan its financial statements for several years when developing their strategic plan.
Walmart’s Competitive Differentiation From its Competitors
In business, especially the retail industry, competitive advantage can be referred to as the ability gained through attributes and resources to perform at a higher level than others in the same industry or market (Powell, 2001). Walmart can have a com.

The mission ideals have been stated in a way that makes them to be easily evaluated. In this regard, this is evident from the business corporate strategy drawn from the mission statement. Walmart employs the use of cost leadership strategy and differentiation. In this way, they are able to offer a wide range of products and services that are of better quality (improving the lives of people) and at a lower cost (saving more money). This are ideals that can be evaluated through cross margin analysis with what the competitors offer. Walmart Supply Chain has been successful in lowering the costs by helping the company in the implementation of the strategy of the cost of leadership.

http://flevy.com/blog/deconstruct-and-innovate-your-business-model/
High customer value proposition is correlated with
• Importance of the job to the customer;

In an environment of compliancy laws, regulations, and standards, in.docxcharisellington63520
In an environment of compliancy laws, regulations, and standards, information technology (IT) departments in organizations must develop comprehensive organizational policies to support compliance. One specific area in which they must develop policies is the governance of fiduciary responsibility. Scenario: As changes occur in compliancy laws, regulations, and standards regularly, IT management of YieldMore has decided to evaluate the governance of fiduciary responsibility within the organization as it pertains to the IT department. Your team has been assigned the task of evaluating how the governance of fiduciary responsibility affects the organization’s risk. Tasks: You are asked to identify the relationship between fiduciary responsibility and organizational risk, and present this information to the IT management of YieldMore.
1. Identify key stakeholders, their roles and responsibilities, and the impact of fiduciary responsibility on each.
2. Determine the relationships among these stakeholders, the relationship between fiduciary responsibility, and organizational risk for each.
3. Distinguish the identified relationships as they relate to strategic, operational, and compliancy goals for the organization.
4. Develop an appropriate plan to govern fiduciary responsibility for the organization.
5. Prepare a report of your findings for IT management to review.

In American politics, people often compare their enemies to Hitler o.docxcharisellington63520
In American politics, people often compare their enemies to Hitler or to the Nazis. Many Democrats compared Trump to a "fascist," and Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez famously compared child detention facilities to "concentration camps." (Republicans claimed this was an unfair comparison and disrespectful to the real victims of the Holocaust.) On the other hand, Republicans often claim that their Democratic enemies are like Hitler, and often whine that "the Left" is persecuting them similar to how the Nazis persecuted the Jews ("cancel culture" is like the Holocaust, wearing a mask is like wearing a yellow star, etc.). Obviously these are exaggerated, bad comparisons, and are more about scoring political points than teaching history accurately.
But is it
always
wrong and disrespectful to draw comparisons or lessons from the Holocaust? Isn't it possible--while being respectful and acknowledging all the differences that make the Holocaust uniquely horrible--to try to draw lessons from it and prevent anything like it in the future? What comparisons or lessons for the present, if any, can we learn from the Holocaust?
Using specific evidence/examples/comparisons from the primary source you analyzed, please make a specific argument about a lesson or comparison
you might draw from the Holocaust. I'm not interested in your general/vague opinions about politics or Holocaust comparisons. I want you to carefully and respectfully (not politically) draw a lesson from something you learned in your document/film.

American opinion has indeed shaped politic consequences, political interests, and policymaking. Even with little or no interest in policymaking and politics, the assumption of democracy gives the citizens the power to freely air out their issues and give their opinion in matters of political concern. Taking the war in Iraq, it posed a significant economic and political imbalance. However, support from the politicians was negligible. And because a majority of the Americans opposed the war in Iran, they voted for a Democratic congressional candidate. Their opinion played a great deal in making concrete policies in response to the war in Iraq.
Public opinion is a reflection of the citizens’ view on how the government responds to national politics. Political actions are driven by the citizen’s opinion (Erikson, & Tedin, 2015). It sheds light on the outcomes of specific policies and helps the political candidates identify the characters demanded of them by the citizens. Political scholars argued that the perception of old public opinions was changed because of ambiguity and inaccuracy (Dür, 2019). Modern theories came to identify public opinion as either latent or a broad expression. Latent opinions are formed on the spot, while broad expressions are opinions that had earlier been formed and remained stable (Cantril, 2015).
When convincing policymakers, it proves difficult, interest groups may indirectly influence public opinion. They can achieve this through the media, holding rallies, or handing out leaflets to the public (Dür, 2019). Because the citizens have little or no information on policymaking, they can easily be swayed by interest groups. Interest groups can, therefore, successfully source their support from public opinion or not.
Public opinion remains relevant in American politics. Journalists, politicians, and political scientists should focus on getting the public’s opinion on state affairs. In as much as views might differ or change, establishing a common ground will help in policymaking (Dür, 2019). For the war in Iraq, the Democratic gained power over the senate and House. This was greatly influenced by the failure of public support that shifted the pro-Democratic in 2006 and the 2008 elections. Because opinions are not fixed, establishing a connection between public views and political outcomes might be impossible.

for this week.
Scenario:
In addition to your role on the Child Study Team, you are also a member of the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MDT). This team is preparing to meet because while the Tier Two Interventions have been helpful, Manuel is still struggling with his reading fluency and his writing, and is continuing to fall further behind. The MDT has received the signed and dated formal permission for referral from Manuel's parents and the school psychologist has conducted an academic achievement evaluation as described in your text. One of your roles as the special education inclusion teacher in your school is to translate the results of all the assessments in a way that is understandable to parents, the child, and to the regular education teacher. Another aspect of your role is to write the Initial Referral to the MDT such as the one described on p. 112 of the text. Finally, in your role as the special education inclusion teacher you are tasked with reviewing the results of all the assessments in order to to help the Manuel, his parents and his other teachers to understand the various strategies that are recommended based on his assessment outcomes.
You have reviewed the RTI data collected to date, including the informal observations of Mr, Franklin and Manuel's other teachers and samples of his classroom work, and have compared those data to
Part I of the Comprehensive Report
prepared by the school psychologist. That report is located in the Instructor Guidance for this week. The data paint a compelling and congruent picture of Manuel's current academic functioning. You are now ready to write an Initial Referral for Manuel so that his eligibility for special education services can be determined.
Initial Post:
Review the
Initial Referral to the Multi-Disciplinary Team form
on p. 112 and 113 of your text. Compare the information needed for that form with the
Child Study Team Referral Form
that you filled out last week for Manuel. Explain the different functions of the two documents and state how they are alike and how they are different. Then, explain how you plan to share the data on the Initial Referral to the Multi-Disciplinary Team form in a way that Manuel, his parents, and Mr. Franklin can understand. Be sure to include an explanation for why you are the one sharing this information with them. Include pertinent professional or personal real world examples to illustrate your points.

In Act 4 during the trial scene, Bassanio says the following lines:
“Antonio, I am married to a wife
Which [who] is as dear to me as life itself;
But life itself, my wife, and all the world
Are not with me esteemed above your life.
I would lose all, ay sacrifice them all
Here to this devil [Shylock] to deliver [save] you.”
And Portia, who hears these lines (though Bassanio doesn’t know it), says,
“Your wife would give you little thanks for that
If she were [near]by to hear you make the offer.”
(Act 4, scene 1, 281-288
Is Antonio really more important to Bassanio than Portia? Explain why or why not. What do these lines tell us about the value of male friendship vs. marriage in this play? Would Portia be justified in rejecting Bassanio, since later in this scene he gives away the ring she gave him which he swore never to give up? (see Act 3, scene 2, lines 167-185) Your response should be about 200-250 words and should include specific references to lines in the play.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Haircuts Business Environment Analysis
Introduction
The aim of every business is to make profits and gain
competitive advantage over similar businesses in the market.
This sentiment is shared by Myra Morningstar, who heads the
UMUC Haircuts, and intends on improving her operations
through the introduction of technology that will provide a
solution to her scheduling problems. This paper includes an
analysis of Porter’s Five Forces, how the analysis supports
Myra’s strategy for competitive advantage, and the business
process for improvement through the use of technology.
Five forces analysis
As stated by Dobbs (2012), the five forces consist of buyer
power, supplier power, threat of substitute products or services,
threat of new entrants, and rivalry among existing competitors.
The effects of the forces on the business are described below.
2. FORCE
EXPLANATION
(Minimum 2 good sentences)
IMPACT (POSITIVE, NEGATIVE, or NEUTRAL)
AFFECT STRATEGY? (YES/NO)
BUYER POWER
It refers to the ease in which customers can affect the firm’s
operations. It is quite high, as the buyers can make the firm to
change its strategy, such as the cost leadership strategy that is
being currently pursued.
Negative
Yes
SUPPLIER POWER
It refers to the ease in which suppliers can affect the firm’s
operations. It is low as there are many substitutes for inputs.
Neutral
No
THREAT OF SUBSTITUTE PRODUCTS OR SERVICES
It refers to the ease in which customers can switch to substitute
services provided by similar businesses. It is high as customers
can easily switch to the hair cuttery, the spa, and the manicurist
offering her services at home.
Negative
Yes
THREAT OF NEW ENTRANTS
It is high as it is easy for other businesses to offer similar
services. This is due to the fact that the initial capital required
is low, as depicted by the opening of the manicure business at
home.
Negative
Yes
RIVALRY AMONG EXISTING COMPETITORS
It refers to the number and capability of competitors. It is quite
high as the business’ competitors are offering quality services,
3. and they are all operating within a small area, therefore
competing for a small number of customers.
Negative
Yes
Justification of the cost leadership strategy
Myra has selected to implement the cost leadership strategy so
as to enhance her business’ competitive strategy. According to
(Kaliappen & Hilman, 2013), providing services at lower prices
than those offered by competitors provides competitive
advantage as the business attracts cost-conscious customers.
The Porter’s buyer power identified the impact of buyers on the
business as being negative. As such, the company should adopt
the cost reduction strategy so as to attract more buyers, which
will lead to customer satisfaction. The supplier power is
neutral, as there are many suppliers providing inputs for the
haircuts business. Myra can therefore select a supplier who
provides products at the least price. The threat of substitute
products or services has a negative impact on the business, and
this has resulted in the reduction of prices so as to prevent
existing customers from switching to substitute businesses that
offer better services. The threat of new entrants has a negative
impact on the business, and the cost leadership strategy is
effective in ensuring that the number of customers does not
decline due to their absorption by the new entrants. Finally,
rivalry among existing competitors has a negative impact on the
business as there are many businesses operating within a small
geographic region. As such, the cost leadership strategy will
give the business a competitive advantage over other businesses
by giving UMUC Haircuts competitive advantage.
Business process
The customer and employee scheduling business process
supports the strategy for competitive advantage. Myra has
discovered that there are customers who prefer certain
4. employees, and scheduling their appointment with their favorite
employees will increase customer satisfaction, therefore
resulting in an increased number of visits. There are times when
the business is outstretched due to a high number of customers,
forcing some of them to be turned away. There are also times
when the employees stay idle due to lack of customers.
According to Hebert and Deckro (2011), scheduling resolves
operations issues as the needs of customers are met in a
satisfactory manner, while the employees’ output is maximized.
Currently, Myra does not use technology while scheduling, but
using technology will help mitigate issues regarding the
availability of employees, customer demands, and inventory
control. The scheduling technology sheds light on the type of
supplies to be ordered and when to do the purchasing of supply.
It can also identify days when customer demand is quite high,
so as to organize for more employees to be available to meet the
demand. It will also improve on the process for replacing absent
employees through the identification of available employees. In
conclusion, the implementation of the cost leadership strategy
and the introduction of technology in scheduling will enhance
UMUC Haircuts’ competitive advantage.

Walmart Example
We will use Walmart as an example to illustrate the various
course concepts. The examples provided in this
document are to assist you in understanding the concepts and
applying them to the class assignments, which
consist of a case study and four staged projects. The examples
are provided for illustrative purposes only, and
may not precisely conform to the specific directions given in
the class assignments. Student should follow the
instructions provided in the assignments.
Business Analysis (Stage 1) – Follow the directions in the Stage
1 Assignment
The following is a discussion of the Five Forces Analysis,
Generic Strategy for Competitive Advantage and
business process improvement to help you understand the
topics. Your assignment specifies the content and
format to be used for your paper.
Applying Porter’s Five Forces Analysis
The Five Forces are explained in the reading assignments for
Week 1. Below is an example showing the
application of the Five Forces analysis to Walmart.
6. We know that Walmart’s objective is everyday low prices,
which is their competitive advantage. When we
look at the Five Forces model as applied to Walmart, we can
determine that the Buyer Power of their customers
is high because patrons have many other choices. However,
customers expect and demand the lowest prices
2
3/27/2015 Summer 2015
from Walmart, and they are willing to overlook, but not ignore,
other factors like customer service, store
location, and atmosphere.
Walmart's Suppliers have little power because of the sheer size
of Walmart, and because being a Walmart
supplier can provide huge sales potential. The suppliers must
do what Walmart wants regarding business
processes and technical requirements. They will also be
pressured for lower prices, which may cause the
suppliers to move production to lower priced labor markets.
The threat of substitute products means that customers can go
elsewhere for the same or substitute items. There
could be some threat here only because of web based stores as
they may be able to have lower prices because of
low overhead.
7. Threat of new entrants in the Brick and Mortar Store area is
low, because of the costs involved in building
stores and the infrastructure to support the business processes.
The threat of new entrants in the Internet market
would be high, because of the low costs involved and the
potential to specialize in different areas with
especially low prices.
Rivalry between competitors at a store level would be high and
could be affected by the breadth of products and
quality of customer service or even the cleanliness and
appearance of the store. On a company level, Walmart’s
Sales are $418 billion and Target, their closest competitor, has
annual sales of $67 billion, so while it may seem
there is a large rivalry, the size of Walmart limits the threat.
Generic Strategy for Competitive Advantage
If we look at the table below, we can see that the Generic
Strategy for Walmart is in the upper left quadrant,
Broad Market and Low Cost. You can see how they compare to
the other retailers shown in this example.
(Baltzan, 2014, p. 22)
The broad market will bring in the largest number of buyers,
which would have the effect of lowering buyer
power. The Low Cost indicates that many things could affect
Walmart’s costs, but their biggest cost is for the
goods that they sell and therefore the Suppliers are important
and Walmart uses their size to decrease the
Supplier power. The Generic Strategy identified makes sense.
The Five Forces analysis above indicates that two areas of
highest concern for Walmart would be
8. 3
3/27/2015 Summer 2015
x Supplier-related activities, like Supply Chain Management
(SCM), supplier training, supplier selection,
and supplier facilitation, that would reduce Walmart’s costs;;
and
x Customer-related activities, like easy payment, easy return of
merchandise, web purchasing with free
delivery to the nearest store, and stocking the items wanted in
the community, which would increase the
number of customers and retain the ones they have; these also
help reduce operating costs.
Note that neither the Five Forces Analysis nor the table of
Generic Strategies for Competitive Advantage
mentions IT or computer systems. IT is not a strategy; the
initial focus is on improving the business processes,
which may or may not have anything to do with IT.
Business Process to be Improved
If Walmart decided to improve its business processes to
increase profits, it would begin with the processes
related to the identified strategy for competitive advantage
(Low Cost Strategy). Each process that needs to be
improved would have its own team. Walmart would then
assemble a team of individuals from different areas
that are involved in the process, and are familiar with the
9. current process. The next step is for the team to
document the As-Is process, its objective, its inputs and
outputs, and the steps in the process. This is usually
done with some kind of a process diagram or model, or written
step-by-step description of the how the process
works. The process selected to help reduce overall costs is the
item return process. The team believes that
improvements in how the store accepts returned items from
customers can help reduce costs.
For this Walmart Example, the following would apply:
GENERIC STRATEGY FOR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE:
Low Cost Strategy
BUSINESS PROCESS TO BE IMPROVED: Item Return
Process
Background for Stage 2
The Walmart team has come up with the following idea for
improving the Item Return Process:
Upon entering the store, the customer is met by the Greeter,
who determines if the customer has an item to
return. If there is no return, he assists the customer with a cart.
If the customer wishes to return an item, the
Greeter asks if the customer has a receipt. If the customer says
“no,” the Greeter attaches a “To be returned”
tag to the item and assists the customer with a cart. If the
customer has a receipt, the Greeter scans the Sales
Receipt Number using a hand held wireless device and if the
item is bar coded, the Greeter will scan the bar
codes of all items to be returned using the hand held device and
indicate that these are returned items. If there is
no bar code on the item the Greeter will select the appropriate
item from the sales receipt image on the hand
held device and indicate the item being returned. The Greeter
10. will then indicate the quantity of each item being
returned. The Greeter’s hand held device will print a credit
slip that can be redeemed for credit (if it was a
credit or debit card purchase) or cash at any cashier. The
handheld device will also print two copies of the
return receipt. One will be attached to the returned item and
one will be given to the customer along with the
original receipt with the returned items crossed out. The greeter
will attach the appropriate documents to the
returned items and place them in a cart for later processing.
This new process will reduce the amount of time overall in
handling returned items, help expedite the
restocking of returned items or determining their final
disposition, and help Walmart keep its costs low.

The Stage 2 assignment calls for a table like the following one
to be completed. Using the above process
model, for the steps labeled "Greeter scans the sales receipt"
(labeled with the "1" in the red box) and "Greeter
indicates returned quantity next to item on handheld" (with the
"2" in the red box), the following input, process
and output entries would be appropriate:

In addition to the functional requirements for a new system, the
IT requirements must also be developed. We
will do this by evaluating the applicability and importance of
each IT requirement listed. The requirements that
are identified as relevant to the business process will form the
IT (technical) requirements for a system. In
evaluating and selecting an IT system, both the functional
(business) requirements and the IT requirements need
14. to be considered. The areas that need to be considered in
developing the IT requirements are listed below in the
Table of IT Requirements, which is similar to the one you will
complete in the Stage 3 assignment. Only a few
of the rankings and explanations are filled in here, but your
table will rank and explain them all. (Be sure to use
the table and instructions provided in the assignment.)
IT Requirement

Explanation for Ranking
(Write a minimum of 3 good
sentences for each; both the
process to be improved and
the case study should be
mentioned in each
explanation; the data used
in the process should be
included in the explanation
where applicable.)
1 Usability
2 Maintainability
3 Scalability Medium The system must be able to
15. handle an increase in the
number of users and devices
being used for Returns during
peak hours. Also, during the
holiday season Walmart handles
a large volume of returns.
Walmart expects its business to
continue to grow, and returns
will grow along with the rest of
the business.
4 Reliability/ Availability
5 Extensibility
6 Portability
7 Security
8 Data Accuracy
9 Data Completeness
10 Authentication High Walmart does not want
customers to use the device.
The system will require the
Greeter to provide specified
login information. This
protects Walmart from
fraudulently recorded
returned items.

In this particular case, only a few of the IT requirements are
evaluated above, to provide an example.
IT
Solution
and Next Steps (Stage 4) – Follow the directions in the Stage 4
Assignment
Now that the Walmart team has identified the business
(functional) and IT (technical) requirements, it is time to
propose a solution and develop a document of the Next Steps
that can be used operationally. Please note that
you will research and propose an IT solution as part of Stage 4.
That is different from what is shown in this
example document where we are simply adding capabilities to a
current Point of Sale (POS) system.
