The Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia erupted in 1595, 1845, and 1985, destroying towns and killing thousands. The 1595 eruption was the largest and killed 25,000 people. After 140 years of dormancy, the 1985 eruption was particularly devastating as the town of Armero was built near the volcano and over 13,000 people were killed when lava flows called lahars destroyed the town. In total, eruptions of the Nevado del Ruiz have directly or indirectly killed over 51,000 people due to mudslides, ash inhalation, and contaminated water.

2. WHAT HAPPENED WITH NEVADO DEL RUIZ
The first known eruption, in 1595, was seen by explorers. It killed 25,000 people. The Nevada del Ruiz didn’t
erupt for many years until 1845. after the eruption of 1845 there was a 140 year gap between eruptions. During
this 140 years of no eruptions, people forgot about what happened in the eruptions in 1595 and 1845, and built
houses next to the volcano. The last eruption to happen was in 1985, which led to a disaster. An entire town next
to the active volcano and no announcement came that it could erupt. Scientists presume that there will be more
eruptions in the future, but until then, scientists will take warnings much more seriously. At least 51,000
people died because of either a colossal mud slide, lahars, inhaling ash, or drinking contaminated
water[contaminated by ash & mud].
