Rugby History • Inthe early 1800s, the game of Rugby was played rather like soccer, but players were allowed to catch the ball and kick it out of their hands. • There was no limit to the number of players on each side for the teams. • Then in 1823, legend goes that a sixteen year old student at the Rugby School in England named William Webb Ellis, caught the ball with his hands during a game and ran with it towards the opponent’s goal line, rather than following the rules of the times of catching and kicking the ball only.

Rugby History • Eventhough this rule wasn’t adopted right away, this incident is believed to be the birth of Rugby. • By 1830, running with the ball was an accepted play, although the first written rules did not appear until 1845 where it became an official rule. • These rules were written by those students that played the game at the school. • Rugby Football Union, governing body for Rugby Union in England, was formed in 1871. • In 1895 there was a split in Rugby into two separate leagues: Rugby Union & Rugby League.
- 4. Why Did RugbySplit? • In 1893, there was a proposal of allowing players to be paid six shillings “broken time” payments when they miss work due to matches. This was voted down by the Rugby Football Union. • In 1895, leading Northern Clubs held a meeting at the George Hotel in Huddersfield, UK and decided to break away because of the southern-based rugby union hierarchy’s refusal to let them compensate players for wages lost while playing the games. This issue of “broken-time payments” penalized clubs which relied on working-class players. • From there, 22 clubs organized and formed what was called the Northern Rugby Union which later changed its name to Rugby League in 1922,as we know it today.

Rugby Union • Theworld governing body for the sport of Rugby Union is called World Rugby and its headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. • As of 2015, World Rugby has 100 member unions and 17 associate member unions. • One of the member unions in the World Rugby and the one I will focus on is USA Rugby

Puma & ItsHistory • Puma is a major German multinational company that produces athletic and casual footwear, as well as sportswear. • It was first formed in 1924 by Adolf and Rudlof Dassler as “Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik“ (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) in Herzogenaurach, Germany. • The first few years these two brothers had great success. • Overall 7 gold medalists and 5 bronze medalists had their spikes on helping them win their medals at the 1928 Olympics.
