Coastal Studies Laboratory: A
unique facility I have established the
Tsunami Coastal Studies Laboratory
at the Guindy Campus, University of
Madras, under the funding support
received from the Ministry of Earth
Sciences (MoES), Government of
India. The MoES has supported for the
establishment of this laboratory
facility under the National
Programme on “Establishment of
National Early Warning System for
Tsunami and Storm Surges in Indian
Ocean”. This laboratory is equipped
with High End Workstation for
Tsunami Modeling, workstations for
image processing and GIS
applications. Six Junior Research
Fellows and one Scientist from the
Institute for Research and
Development (IRD), France and one
Master student from Kyoto
University, Japan are working in this
laboratory.

15. Academic responsibilities:
I – Academic Activities
(i) Introduced important elective courses entitled “Basics of Remote Sensing and GIS”,
“Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)” and “Disaster Risk Management” for the
benefit of PG students of our University apart from guiding Ph.Ds in these fields.
(ii) Guided students in obtaining funding under the Students Project Scheme from the Tamil
Nadu State Council for Science and Technology in the field of tsunami impact studies.
(iii) Obtained India Japan bilateral research grant with provision for students and faculty
exchange visits to the Kyoto University.

II – Campus Extension Activities
(i) Served as Deputy Warden for the PG Hostel for Men, Guindy Campus, University of
Madras since July 2003. This Hostel Campus provides accommodation for M.Sc., M.Phil
and Ph.D. scholars from the University of Madras, Guindy Campus Departments for a
maximum of about 250 students.
(ii) Served as Adjunct Faculty to the Center for Ocean and Coastal Studies [COCS], University
of Madras, in order to support this new Center activity.
(iii) As Dean of Students conducting periodic counseling session, multi-cultural programmes,
etc involving students in all campuses of University of Madras.
III – Development of the University
(i) Taken up the additional responsibility as Scientific Officer in the Vice – Chancellor’s
Secretariat, University of Madras, in order to support the new research proposals under
the 150th year celebrations. The important tasks carried out under this responsibility are:
• Involved in the Organization of the International Conference and Port and Infrastructural
Management during January 2007.
• Organized the Poster Event at the Senate House during the visit of NAAC Peer Team
during March 2007.
• Involved in the preparation of University Brochure.
• Organized the exhibition at the UGC National Conference on 150 years of higher
education in India held at New Delhi during 10-11 October 2007.
(ii) As a Founder Principal I have brought up the University of Madras Arts and Science
College (University Constituent College) at Nemmeli Campus from its inception.
(iii) Taken over charges as Dean – Student Affairs, University of Madras with effect from 21st
December 2015 to orient students and scholars of the University towards mainstream of
higher education.

(i) Serving as an editorial team member* in the JOURNAL OF COASTAL CONSERVATION
(JCCO), 2007, official journal of the EUCC published by Springer.
(ii) Serving as managing editor of the Asian Journal of Environment and Disaster
Management by Research Publishing.
(iii) Member, Board of Studies in Geology (UG), Thiruvalluvar University from 2009 onwards.
(iv) Advisor, Staff Selection Commission during 2011.
(v) Completed two web based courses on “Comprehensive Natural Disaster Risk
Management Framework” and “Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction” during April
– July 2007 conducted by the World Bank Institute and NIDM, Govt of India.

Establishment of Tsunami and Coastal Studies Laboratory: A unique facility I have established the Tsunami Coastal Studies Laboratory at the Guindy Campus, University of Madras, under the funding support received from the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India. The MoES has supported for the establishment of this laboratory facility under the National Programme on “Establishment of National Early Warning System for Tsunami and Storm Surges in Indian Ocean”. This laboratory is equipped with High End Workstation for Tsunami Modeling, workstations for image processing and GIS applications. Six Junior Research Fellows and one Scientist from the Institute for Research and Development (IRD), France and one Master student from Kyoto University, Japan are working in this laboratory. AAS and Internet Laboratories: Contributed and compiled the DST- FIST Proposal entitled “Environmental Geochemistry“ which was presented by the Head, Dept of Applied Geology and obtained grant Rs. 35 Lakhs from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. (ii) Guided students in obtaining funding under the Students Project Scheme from the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology in the field of tsunami impact studies. (iii) Obtained India Japan bilateral research grant with provision for students and faculty exchange visits to the Kyoto University.
  • 28. Page 27 of 28 II – Campus Extension Activities (i) Served as Deputy Warden for the PG Hostel for Men, Guindy Campus, University of Madras since July 2003. This Hostel Campus provides accommodation for M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D. scholars from the University of Madras, Guindy Campus Departments for a maximum of about 250 students. (ii) Served as Adjunct Faculty to the Center for Ocean and Coastal Studies [COCS], University of Madras, in order to support this new Center activity. (iii) As Dean of Students conducting periodic counseling session, multi-cultural programmes, etc involving students in all campuses of University of Madras. III – Development of the University (i) Taken up the additional responsibility as Scientific Officer in the Vice – Chancellor’s Secretariat, University of Madras, in order to support the new research proposals under the 150th year celebrations. The important tasks carried out under this responsibility are: • Involved in the Organization of the International Conference and Port and Infrastructural Management during January 2007. • Organized the Poster Event at the Senate House during the visit of NAAC Peer Team during March 2007. • Involved in the preparation of University Brochure. • Organized the exhibition at the UGC National Conference on 150 years of higher education in India held at New Delhi during 10-11 October 2007. (ii) As a Founder Principal I have brought up the University of Madras Arts and Science College (University Constituent College) at Nemmeli Campus from its inception. (iii) Taken over charges as Dean – Student Affairs, University of Madras with effect from 21st December 2015 to orient students and scholars of the University towards mainstream of higher education.
